Picked this up in summer sale and surprised it isn't more popular. It's quite fun for what it is.
This is not a traditional town builder with semi-permanance. It's a roguelite deck builder, where the town you build replaces the dungeon you would usually explore.
It's fun but I noticed only 6.9% of players got the achievement for more than 10 playthroughs. There is probably a bit of dissonance between the game's target playerbase and who the game initially appeals to.
Since I already enjoy several varieties of this genre (such as town building, roguelite crawlers, card/deck builders and resource planning games) I knew I would enjoy this.
Even so I can understand the fall off in interest over time. I can mange one playthrough at a time now, because it's hard to start over again when the progression gained from one failed attempt doesn't necessarily translate into anything tangible for the next. It's too much of a slow burn.
Sometimes you can see the inevitable downfall of your town several turns ahead without any opportunity to delay or change course, so you keep playing each turn, hoping the next will have the right card or choice offered. It doesn't. You fail. You can start again, but none of the variables have changed so why put yourself through the exact experience again.
It's quite easy to track your needs and requirements, especially if you've ever played any of the Reigns games. I don't like that the upgrade trees are tied to combo bonuses (certain buildings need to built near, or away, from each other; too much thinking/remembering needed). Maybe my issue with progression is I've been selecting more passive upgrades but even when I do pick a combo, like markets and bakeries, I can play whole rounds without triggering the bakery to appear at all.
I hope to keep playing casually and see if this opinion changes over time. In the meantime, I recommend this game as long as none of the above has put you off too much. If you don't like roguelites, don't play. If you don't like limited planning decisions and a high degree of RNG, don't play.
Overall, it's been a fun, casual diversion, easy to play in bits and bobs when I don't have enough spoons to overthink other games. One or two rounds can feel quite cozy.
Delightfully funny and challenging, this cute little game is great for role playing fans looking for something a bit more chill. It's packed with fantasy lore treats, and it asks players to make tough resource decisions: do I send adventurers on a quest and leave my town exposed, do I spend my money on a bakery, or do I save it for the travelling salesman. There is a lot to discover and unlock over successive games, and the daily newspaper is often hilarious. I really like it!
I bought this game mostly because it was on sale and the name made me laugh. I expected to kind of enjoy it for an hour or two, but I've now played over 7 hours in the last couple days. This game is fun and difficult, and it makes you laugh and think. The writing is exactly my sense of humor (many screenshots were sent to group chats), but the actual gameplay takes strategic thinking (something that's not necessarily my strong suit). I'm getting better at it each time I play a new round, and I'm very much enjoying it. Definitely would recommend!!

It slightly calls to mind the Spell Caster University. In Fantasy Town Regional Manager, you gain cards (only ever 3 at a time) and use them to build various kinds of buildings. You start-out with a town hall and a very small amount of space cleared for you each time you build, except the very first time. The first time, you have to fit a few buildings into very tight spaces in the forest. This teaches you to rotate the buildings. Each building has its own advantages, and some have disadvantages. Your job is to build a thriving adventurers' town. You must provide food, housing, guild-like buildings for 5 different types of adventures, security for them all, and a source of income for your town.
Be careful. There are random events. I just got all my farms wiped out, for example. These sorts of things add an element of unpredictability, making each session different.
The game basically pits your town security against the surrounding threats, some can be fought against by your adventurers in quests; others cannot. Your security is influenced by a number of things, including towers, number of adventurers available, food, and such.
As you gain renown with the various types of adventurers, you can unlock perks and new building types. You will need to clear the forest, and the ruins of your former towns (you will fail frequently), to make room for the expansion of your newest enterprise.

My suggestion for the developers is to make various levels for the buildings. This way, people can continue to upgrade.
Bought this on sale expecting a small game for a few hours and got more than I expected.
It's a nifty system, high replayability, it does get a bit repetitive after some hours but there is enough new things coming up to keep it fresh. Worth every cent.
Not a half-bad game. It's more akin to a mobile game than a PC game but for the price point (I bought it on sale) I'm happy with it. You inevitably fail every time as it's a game of attrition and survival but there is good replay value due to the ability to complete challenges that unlock upgrades which carry over to your next play-through.
Such a nice, casual game! I love how the game doesn't even expect your town to stay, but the point is to achieve the goals on the way to failure (a lovely way to put it, I know) and build the upgrade tree to make the guilds cooperate with you more the further you get.
By far some of the biggest exploitations of my time and effort. Why does every developer have a sadistic bone in their body? build 8 buildings in 1 turn? impossible. difficulty ramps up before you ever finish that quest. all the "optional" quests that are actually mandatory because they will just keep growing and get your town overrun. cards that generate income are RARE and its all just b.s. in the end. i highly recommend you avoid this game unless youre a masochist who enjoys making random amounts of progress and get jackpot necessary quests. IF I DIDNT PLAY IT SO MUCH ALREADY, I WOULD REFUND IT IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!

I actually enjoy the game but it becomes very repetitive and it needs a) some greater meta layer to contextualize what we're doing and/or b) more than one level
When I play a game I'm investing my hours into it. What I don't like about a game is having a suicide mode where all my hours were just wasted and I have to restart all over. Thank god I only had to play it for 86 minutes before that happened on the first run-through! I like expansion games. I like strategy and tactical games. This is a nice expansion game except when the all-mighty evil god of destruction comes in to wipe me out because it's inevitable, then no thanks.
I have an extensive library of games on Steam and there are lots of them inactive for one reason or another. At least this one got 86 minutes of my time as others got less than this one did. My review is for those who don't care for the mandatory suicidal mode part of this game. Otherwise, enjoy it if this is what you like.
This game is simple and straight forward to understand with a lot of meta humor that I enjoy. I am having a lot of fun with Fantasy Town Regional Manger.
games a cool concept but the rng is way to high had threat level jump over 20 twice in the same match.
I can't get past winter despite pretty much all my relationships being "strong green". I don't understand why the quests don't decrease the enemies’ overall threat level seeing how I'm supposedly clearing areas of enemies. There's an error in the logic there, I think, if you amend it would make the game challenge less insurmountable. Right now, I think I am doing everything right, trying to use the new, more powerful cards whenever I can, I've played both strategies of spending lots of money on quests, or very little money on quests, (whenever I have the manpower and can spare a few adventurers, which is seldom). The maths behind the game make it impossible to keep up with the enemy, too much is hingent upon whether there are defence boosts in the newspaper, upon luck. New defense building technology is not sufficiently boosted. Even if I put down several buildings that would attract the factions, the result is that at the end of the turn- if I only end up attracting a very few (probably, via a covert dice roll?), the game doesn't appear to make up for my loss in the coming turns. It would be better if one building would guarantee to attract at least X adventurers, spread out over the next coming turns or so, rather than having a % chance of immediately attracting some, which has a high chance of failing. If you don't let the gamer in a little bit more on what we are doing when we are placing the buildings, we can't actually strategise.
Outside of all this it's a lovely game idea, with a good base and lots of humour. I love digital strategy cardgames and want to see more of them. You can look at Spellcaster University for inspiration regarding how to balance the game and the hand you're dealt. I really do want to see this game succeed.
It's not really a bad game but I'll still give it a down-vote. Reasons below.
It's sort of fun to build your town but the events are terribly random which is VERY annoying. Get some really bad news three times in a row (more monsters, adventurers dying, etc.) in the newspaper and you're pretty much done for because the monsters will kill your town and you have no way to get the defenses back up in time. Unless of course you are super lucky again and receive very good news in the newspaper (more adventurers, extra defense events, etc.). Or that you get lucky enough to receive some defense building cards.
The bottom line is: the player does not have enough control. Everything depends on luck first and foremost.
The game is made so that you have to rebuld the town constantly. And you can unlock new perks and buildings while doing so. But I didn't find that part very motivating. It just doesn't feel impactful enough and it is very grindy. Meanwhile the newspaper can really screw you. HARD.

Also, there isn't really much content. As you can see, I got annoyed and bored after 2 hours already.
I would love to know how to get more upgrades and if there will be more options in the next update, I love it so far but I would love to see castles.

Despite not usually playing Micro-Management games (though I do play a lot of roguelites), I found myself far more engrossed in this game than I thought I would.
Fantasy Town Regional Manager provides a Zen yet challenging experience where you have to expand and protect a town from external threats and the chaotic shenanigans of the adventurer inhabitants.
There's plenty of RPG-based humor to go around, all of which are carefully woven into the narrator's newspaper and gameplay events.
Such includes bucket head robberies, adventurers turning each other into gold, and vengeful princesses raising an army of critters (the latter of which is more than happy to chew down the new library you just built next to them).
The game rewards strategies focussing on balance over surplus (besides gold, you can save up some for traveling merchants or other buildings). For example, suppose there aren't enough adventurers defending the town. In that case, you'll soon be vulnerable to all mater of fantastical occurrences, including giant birds and dryads seeking to promote their peaceful and sustainable ways by force. Conversely, if you have too many adventurers running around without housing, they'll start creating mischief. Such includes pranking/in-fighting other guilds and portaling away into the unknown. Additionally, more threats will be drawn in to challenge them.
You'll also need to manage factors like food, inflation, resources for quests, and requests from each of the five guilds (the latter of which provides upgrade tokens that can permanently make your life easier).
The only nitpicks I could find after many playthroughs were:
The tutorial could explain a few details for new players, such as mechanics around enemy camps spreading, satisfaction, and upgrades a bit more. Most of these are shown on the HUD though.
While most guild quests are straightforward, a few of them (such as keeping another guild's satisfaction down for six turns) can be pretty difficult for new players, and those can occur very early on if you're unlucky.
There was a rare bug where reloading a save above 100 adventurers could result in extra adventurers spawning in without explanation on resuming the save.
That said, the devs have been working on these, so they may not be present in your playthroughs. None of them broke the flow or quality of gameplay, which hasn't lost its edge to me 15 hours in.
This game is well worth the XP and more than worth its price in gold.

A consistent grind, and the only good thing I can say about it is that it's writing has a sense of humor.
This game would be good it was early access, but it being sold as full release.
Truthfully, I play a lot of city builders and games with a decent amount of resource management. This has become one of my favorites within an hour of playing it. While their is repetition (as will all games of this nature), there are ways to make it fun. Its fun seeing the quests, reading the humor, and I think its an interesting premise by not being able to just place anything you want based on money.
This game is so frustrating.
I am terrible at it.
My town is forever getting reclaimed by the wilderness and I don't entirely understand the mechanics behind keeping the town threat level low. Building towers seems to be the best way, however the price goes up with each one you build as it does with all the other buildings. Money flow, threat reduction, adventurers to run quest, it's all a lot to deal with.
Each play through I seem to get a little better, although there are still some instances in which it doesn't seem to matter and everything falls apart really quickly.
I feel like this game is more reliant on RNG than actual skills.
FTRM is an interesting mix between card game, city builder and roguelite.
Starting with a patch of land and an adventurers guild hall, you play cards to build your town. Each card costs gold which you earn from adventurers you attract to your town. There are different classes which you must keep happy, housed and fed. As the town grows you'll also need to spend gold to clear more land, which gets progressively more expensive the further you expand.
The goal is to attract warriors to protect the town as ever growing threats risk destroying it. Be warned that unhappy warriors may become part of the threat to the town. Each turn begins with a series of news paper articles which informs you of any events in your kingdom. Some good, some bad, and almost all of them are layered with humor.
Because it's a roguelite, It's not a question of if your city will be destroyed, but when. Your city will fall and a new one will be built on it's ruins. That is where the games unlock system will give future civilizations a chance to thrive.... a little longer at least.
Overall, fun game. Easy pick if you want an indie game that you can chill out with after work.

I submitted to refund this game. It's a good idea, but it really feels like a game that is still in Early Access. In fact, I would have kept it if it was in Early Access. But it just doesn't feel done to me.
nettes kleines Spiel. Runden sind recht kurz (zumindest am Anfang) da man sehr schnell überrannt wird. Man schaltet mit der Zeit und dem erledigen von Aufgaben bessere Gebäude frei die einem weiter kommen lässt. Nicht stressig und von daher auch recht entspannend.

This game was not what I was expecting. I thought it would be something like SimCity where you endlessly expand your town. But this game isn't meant for you to build a long term town right out of the gate. You are expected to create a town, accomplish some small goals and quests, earn upgrade points and then - when your town crashes and burns - unlock some upgrades and start over again.
I've played for 16 hours and have yet to fully unlock all of the upgrades. I have unlocked all of the buildings and it is starting to get a little repetitive but I can see this as a fun game to come back to after a break and play a few rounds to pass the time.
It was definitely worth the price. I highly recommend.

Long term strategy is non-existent. Graphics, sound, etc. are all nice. However the threat system is unbalanced. Nothing will ever be accomplished in this game. Solitaire is more satisfactory.
I mean it's cute, and it's got some humour as well.
Unfortunately it's literally nothing but a grind, once you figure out the mechanics the you just restart town after town completing quests, and it doesn't really matter how successful that town is. Normally that would be fine and all but so far as I see it, there's literally no skill involved.
I would certainly enjoy it if there was more strategy/planning/different builds/types of play, but as of writing it's just throw down cost effective buildings, upgrade, gg.

I've been looking for a game like this for a long time. I went on steam to try to scout out a game to satisfy my itch for "grind" progressive game to play and this everything I've been looking for and more.

Seriously though, This game is fantastic. Took me a few "game overs" to finally figure out what I'm supposed to be doing and how to manage the threat meter. But everytime I did get a "game over," I tried again... and believe me, you'll want to keep trying. It's such an easy, relaxing, and different game! I've noticed there are some parts in the game that say stuff like "coming soon," which is awesome because adding more to this game can only make it more fun. I really think this game is a gem and could outdo those other similar city builder types (won't name any); it definitely has the potential. Great job Devs at Caps Collective, please keep up the good work! If I could give a suggestion, it would possibly be to explain how to manage the threat meter better. There isn't much of a "tutorial" for this game, which is both good and bad. Some folks like being thrown straight into the lion's den without having their hand's held, some don't. You all REALLY need to try this game. And again, when you get a game over, keep trying. Learn how to manage the individual guilds and gain points for each to unlock upgrades and new buildings.
PS. To all the other reviews: The threat meter does go up fast. But it can also be stabilized easily. Pay attention to your guild quests, some are easy and some are tough. The more you complete the more points you get for each individual guild to unlock new Perks. Read those perks carefully, manage your building placements, ,and your town stability will stay 100/100 for a long time. As i said before. Take the time and keep trying after you get game overs. Read all the tool tips when you hover the mouse over certain things. It's a much more intricate game than some people are making it out to be. :)

The premise is fun, and the mechanics work well. However, the game's threat level goes up really fast. I shouldn't be at the start of the game with only 50 coins and have the threat jump +12 in one turn. It just makes it extremely frustrating.

It's a simple, nice looking game with good music. Unfortunately the game lacks depth and gets pretty boring after about 30 minutes. You can't do enough to offset the inevitable defeat by the enemy AI.
At only $8, it's worth checking out if you think it's your cup of tea. I though it was a cute game but nothing I'd want to play longer than the 1 hour I put into it.

Cute, fun game to play while listening to audio books.
Interesting concept, the idea is there but the execution is lacking. The graphics and town setup are cool, but the game isn't balanced. There's no strategic way to play with the threat continuously and randomly growing and the cost of buildings continuously increasing. And when you inevitably fail, you lose everything you built.
I like the game so far. However, I feel like the element of threat came up far too much. There was no way to counter it fast enough to keep the game up. I would like an update that would possibly allowed for more opportunity. All over, I would give this new game a positive review, with hope for more updates in the future.

I played this game for about half an hour. The game does its thing and the player sits and watches. I couldn't get a sense for how I could impact the game play. Placement of buildings is fine but very limited and the "enemy" kept cutting the game very short. It was a boring game. Not sure how it earned so many positive reviews.
It's all right, and reasonable value. The pacing is off, the game gets far more interesting when you unlock adjacency bonuses for your buildings, but the unlock process is quite slow. Without adjacency bonuses, the gameplay rapidly becomes automatic.
The newspaper articles are well-written, and the plotlines are light and amusing. The only bug I've encountered so far is that the adjacency bonus for fighting rings and inns doesn't seem to actually do anything. There are some quality of life polishes that would add value: I'd like to be able to have my Progress indicators visible all the time, instead of having to go into the pause menu and then select Progress. Similarly, it's harder than it should be to know if you've accepted all of the available quests.
The roguelite progression is definitely there, and after a few hours, you get a starting position that feel dominant, compared to the way it started when you didn't have anything leveled up.
I recommend this to city builder players who are looking for something they can use to keep their hands busy when they're too tired or stressed to play something more demanding. Each turn only has 1 or 2 things to do, and you can therefore play at your own pace. (Be aware that you're always racing against the Threat, and while Threat is always increasing, it gets more and more expensive to upgrade your town. The satisfaction is in lasting longer than you did on your previous runs.)
Not sure how I managed to pump 15 hours into this over 2 days. I sit down and play and am immersed untill suddenly it's been 5 hours+...

After 38 minutes, I chose to ask for a refund.
It looks good and has really good ideas.
It also contains lots of humor and I had a laugh or three.
But after some 30 minutes, I started feeling like I had seen it all and it became a bit repetitive.
It may simply not be my kind of game though, although it certainly looked like it at first.
I would like to not give it a recommendation at all, so I am going for positive (with a warning) as I don't think it deserves a negative recommendation.

I love how vibrant the game is, which is thanks to the music, the cute colours, the little people moving about the buildings, and the amount of story it's able to fit in with the newspaper and your own gameplay.
That's all drawn me in, but what's kept me playing is seeing more new buildings appear, then deciding how their placement might affect the satisfaction of each class of adventurers. It starts off simple enough but when you're ready, you're able to introduce modifiers that impact the way you play even further.
And of course, I love me some humour, and the writing in this game is *chef's kiss* top notch.
Buy game, is fun. Such Enjoyment.

Good fun for a couple of hours. Some graphical bugs but other than that, its a great game.

It is a nice game with great gameplay.
There are a lot of weird and unpolished things, a lot of which comes with lags and twitches, but overall I am recommending this game, as I think it has a great potential.

Great game. Just wish there was a way to get rid of enemy threat. As it is now it just stacks up infinitely (and randomly) until you cant grow fast enough to counteract it. At least the enemy event that appear in the newspaper could be made into actual enemies on the map so that you can send adventurers to kill them.

As is, it's a nice little game for a small price, and I'd heartily recommend it.
