Very worthy update to make this classic playable on modern systems. I'd swerve the season pass as it seems to have been neglected for content, but the base game is just as great as you remember. (Or just worth playing if you missed it first time round but want to play some breakout.)

I use it strictly as a thinking game or to listen to music. This is not the most complete brickbreaker, it is really basic. No boss battles or anything. I try to avoid winning games because the winning celebration is loud and will blast your ears, even with volume off it still plays. I don't use it to win or play like a normal videogame, it is more like a head clearing game and would say it serves its purpose well enough. Although it won't really be in my mount rushmore for head-clearing games.

小时候不知道这游戏有简单模式，challenge set过前5关都费劲。后来知道简单模式之后就打简单休闲了。复刻版发布之后了解了这个游戏很多设计的细节，解开了小时候的一些疑惑。新版charm的设计我个人不是很感兴趣，并且charm的分太高了对刷分影响太大（虽然我也不怎么刷分23333）。总之补票为主吧。

Hands down the best Brick Breaker game ever! All the powerups, paddle bounce, the force you can manipulate the ball, the custom made maps - everything is made right, yet simple and feeling oldschool. The DLCs also are worth the price as you get so many different levels to enjoy. Satisfying and relaxing, perfect for passing some time on - I definitely reccomend it

DX-Ball 2: 20th Anniversary Edition ist ein Breakout Game, in dem man mit einem Stick Steine zerschießt oft kriegt man Symbole von oben die einem das Spiel teilweise erleichtern oder auch erschweren. Totenköpfe rauben dir ein Leben. Brennende und elektrisierte Bälle verschaffen dir Vorteile, und zusätzliche Leben erhält man ab und zu auch ein tolles Spiel mit unzähligen Leveln und Erweiterungen.

+В нее возможно играть на современных машинах так как фпс залочен и мяч не разгоняется до первой космической за 2 секунды игры
+Новые поверапы скорее да(появилась молния из ривалболла, плазмаболл довольно приколен, единственное поверап который меняет траекторию на параболическую довольно мех)
+Новые механики для ракетки (появился удар для разгона мяча и вызов волн которые заставляют мяч по параболе лететь вниз(что делает поверап слегка безполезным)), что делают трикшоты попроще в выполнении и экономит очень много нервов когда пытаешься выцелить последний кирпич на экране
+Теперь мяч со скоростью 20+ ваншотает металические кирпичи
+Новые версии старых паков(широкие)
-Клюшку занерфили к херам. Теперь она длится 5 секунд, не комбинируется с бластером, и при ее поднятии мяч резко разгоняется до 25.Тип понятно что она ломала 99% экранов, но хренов фаербол также все аннигилирует и разрабы его оставили без изменений
-Поломаный плеер музыки. Часть семплов безбожно пердит, часть вообще не играет, Xm модули которые в оригинале работали, вызывают вылеты, хорошо что часть проблем можно разпердолить помучав файл config.cfg
-В последней версии сломали невидимые блоки.Теперь с какого то фига это свойство фона,а не самого блока.Теперь можно себе запороть прохождение, если неломающийся блок налез на невидимый фон
-До сих пор 10% блоков хотят нас убить,ну блин сиквел правильно сделал что уменьшил шанс выпадения черепов
-Разрабы так и не выпустили 2 последних пака и вообще от них радиомолчание, так что если хочется все наборы экранов, придется их както доставать самому
-Нет поддержки экранов от ривалболла. Ну понятно что анимированые экраны и луа скриптинг занял много времени и сил что даже все пришлось свернуть, но не сказать что у него было бы так сложно

白驹过隙，世事无常，所幸还能通过当年的作品来追溯已经变得遥不可及的旧日情境，这样也就足够了。
I missed DX Ball. Then I wondered if it was on Steam. It was. Huzzah.
This game is awesome. Buy it now! Hard to play on the SteamDeck but, fire it up in desktop mode on the SteamDeck and you are golden.
A great classic block breaker with an also great soundtrack.
I also like the fact that you can create your own levels and share them with others through the Steam-Workshop.
If you like other block breakers like [i]Arkanoid[/i], you'll certainly like this one.
[spoiler]Free piece of advice when playing this game: you can speed up your ball, and thus rack up a bit more points than normal when breaking a block, by clicking on the left mouse button right before the ball lands on the bar.
Also, by holding the right mouse button, you can pull the ball faster towards you if it's near the bar.
However, if you've picked up the power-up that makes the ball fall down faster, holding the right mouse button will push the ball upwards instead. [/spoiler]

My childhood. It's a simple breakout clone, but the simplicity is what makes it fun.
Man I must have played this for hundreds of hours as a kid in the late 90s. Mega nostalgia trip! Definitely recommend to those who played back then, as for new players, there's quite a bit of weirdness and jank but it still plays fine on modern hardware so give it a try if you like this kind of games!
Love the fact this has come to Steam. This is easily the best Breakout clone ever made. Used to play this for hours years ago. Great game and good price. Don't buy the season pass though as this doesn't look like it's had any updates in years. The base game and the 2 small DLC are definitely worth it though.

You are a brave bounce paddle facing down an infinite army of menacingly motionless (most of the time) rectangle demons with naught but a ball bearing and a dream of freedom. OK maybe none of that was true because there is no story, but my review format includes a "Story" section so I had to put SOMETHING here.
[h1]Gameplay[/h1]
DXB2 is a very simple game. Your mouse controls the current location of a bounce paddle locked to the bottom of your screen, and your job is destroy all of the destroyable blocks on the screen until none remain by deflecting a single ball into them without letting it miss your paddle, then do that all over again. Left clicking can bounce the ball harder if time correctly to destroy multi-stage bricks in a single strike, and the right mouse button acts as a strange sort of gravity well pulse that can help guide or course correct the ball. Sometimes a destroyed block will release an item that can help you, hinder you, or change the way the game functions with varying levels of convenience and desirability. Grabbing a Slow Ball power up may seem like it makes you life easier, but it also makes playing out a stage take far longer, whereas grabbing a Lightning Ball will make tracking it harder, but allow it zap bricks in range without hitting them directly. Sometimes one of the hundreds of stages will use invisible bricks that have to be found or invincible bricks that don't need to be destroyed, but can hinder your ability to destroy other bricks. Some stages use switches to move bricks around and some stages include bricks that move about on their own. Ultimately, however, the game just isn't very fun. How quickly you complete a stage has far more to do with what powerups the game graces you with than it does skill or intelligent paddle movement. Far, far too many stages absolutely fill the screen with invincible blocks and then ask the player to navigate a ball they have very murky control over through said bricks in order to destroy the ones that can be broken. The game does feature a failsafe of sorts that turns all bricks into breakable ones if it detects that you haven't broken any for a long enough amount of time. This will rescue players from being stuck in an endless cycle of trying and failing to reach a pesky brick or one that becomes entrapped in moving invincible ones, but also reveals the fasted and most efficient way to play the game: Just release your ball and let it bounce between an unbreakable brick and your paddle until the failsafe kicks in, freeing you up to tediously clear the screen to your heart's content. There's undeniably a certain level of instant gratification that comes with getting getting your hands on the Laser Paddle or a combination of Fire Ball and Lightning Ball, but what this really is, is relief. Relief that you're being freed to clear up the stage far faster than you ever could without these items luckily dropping to rescue you.

There's not exactly a lot to say about it. Some of the murals the bricks paint can be fun and clever and the game features appreciated little flourishes like the reflective surface of the ball taking on the curved mirror image of its immediate surrounding or the screen change sort of unfurling like a rolled up sheet of paper, but that's about all there is to it. Music ranges from modestly enjoyable to ear cancer and there's very little sound work to speak of.

Sometime in the early 2000s, when I was a very young lad, I played the first DX-Ball. I remember playing through the various levels trying hard to beat my Father's and older Brother's score. Although usually they managed to overtake me again not long after. We could set our names in the leader-board back then, and we always came up with silly names and little taunts to each other, all out of fun! It's memories and experiences like these that can really make a simple, ancient game something special. DX-Ball 2 is a brick-breaking game developed and published in the late '90s by Longbow Games (founded by Seumas McNally). It looks old, sounds old, but plays exceptionally well for its age on my Windows 10 machine in early 2024.
Release in '96, the first DX-Ball was a free game that you can still find online fairly easily. DX-Ball 2, how ever, adds a lot more to the cult classic that I enjoyed as a child. A vast swath of new levels, new sounds, new power-ups, a level editor, and online leader-boards to keep you entertained and playing for hours to come! DX-Ball 2 holds true to the mid-to-late 90's theme, both graphically and audibly. If you opt for the Deluxe Anniversary edition, you will get access to the season pass, which adds access to the classic pack, which includes all of the levels from DX-Ball 1. That alone was a must buy for me, and I definitely don't regret paying a little more.
DX-Ball 2 marks 3 of the 4 games I frequented as a child to make its way to Steam. I certainly hope to see more classic games, like DX-Ball, on Steam in the future. Sure, DX-Ball 2 is a simple brick-breaker with heavily dated graphics and sound effects, but the DX-Ball franchise ages like a very fine wine. If you have never experienced an old school game like this, than I strongly recommend that you give it a chance!
This review is in honor of Seumas McNally (1979 - 2000), the original designer and developer of the DX-Ball series. May his memory, and his games, live on indefinitely.

Clásico juego de 1999, remasterizado para ordenadores modernos. Simplemente es un 10 de 10. Es un muy buen tipo estilo Breakout/Arkanoid, con funcionalidades para no hacerlo aburrido. Se complementa muy bien con otro juego realizado por los mismos creadores (Michael y Sarah Welch), y amigos del director de éste juego (Seumas Macnally, Q.E.P.D.), llamado Super DX - Ball. Lamentablemente aún no está disponible en Steam pero he visto que hay planes para ponerlo eventualmente, pero sí está disponible para su compra retail en la propia web.
La única desgracia de DX - Ball 2 Anniversary Edition es que lamentablemente el juego aún no ha recibido las actualizaciones prometidas desde hace varios años. Parece que el desarrollo del juego se detuvo junto con la pandemia, ya que la última actualización es de Enero/Febrero del 2020. Ojalá no haya sido abandonado. Al día de la fecha faltan 2 board packs, los mismos están listados en el apartado del Season Pass del juego, y también había contenido adicional no disponible en las versiones originales del juego, listado.

I was going to write one of my longer reviews for this game because I'd been playing the original DX-Ball which is now free via sites like Caiman Games ([url=http://www.caiman.us/scripts/fw/f288.html][b]HERE[/b][/url]); as well as my original copy of DX-Ball 2, which is the original version of this updated anniversary edition. However, rather than go into the mechanics of the game and the descriptions of the 23 power ups as well as a multitude of charms that can be collected during game play, I've directed you to an excellent guide by Theigno [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1573212121][b]HERE[/b][/url], which describes all you need to know about DX-Ball 2: 20th Anniversary Edition, from the most common power up, which is the death power up, to the physics of the ball, the effects of the bat , all the brick types and the charms you can earn throughout the game.
Charms can earn you significant amounts of points because successive charms earned multiply the points you get, for example the first charm earns you 250 points whereas the fifth will earn you five times as many points etc; however, you can only collect one charm per level of which at the time of posting this review numbers over one hundred charms. These are grouped into 5 categories, from common to rare; and, of which 9% are of the rarer variety. I've played over 14 hours so far and have yet to unlock a rare charm. If you lose a life, one of your charms will disappear; however, I've not figured out whether this is random or determined.
The anniversary edition includes some new additions, most notable is the punch paddle that allows you to hit the ball harder and increases the speed of the ball significantly. The faster the ball hits a brick the more points you score; however, you're more likely to lose a ball when the ball speed increases. If you manage to keep a ball in play for the whole of a level without losing a life, you'll notice the ball speed does gradually increase, unless you pick up the 'slow ball' power up, which slows the ball to the slowest speed possible in game, however, even after collecting a slow ball power up, the ball speed will continue to gradually increase in speed up to a point, unless you pick up more 'slow balls'.
[b]My overall impressions of the game:[/b]
This version of DX ball, gives you a significant number of levels to beat that are divided into lots of different level packs. Some are expansion packs that were originally sold separately from the base game and some are custom made level sets made by the community. Also, you can create your own level sets using the games editor, which is accessed when you first click on the games icon in your Steam library. This opens up a small dialog window, with two choices, Play DX-Ball 2: 20th Anniversary Edition or Launch Game Editor.
If you've used game editors from other breakouts, you'll probably find DX-Ball's editor relatively simple to use. If you find it confusing, you can find an excellent tutorial on how to use the editor [url=https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1576617727][b]HERE[/b][/url]. Any of the brick sets can be selected, but you'll first need to know where you've installed the game so that you can access whichever board set you want to access. Most of the board sets use the same bricks, some more than others, so it's worth exploring several level sets before settling on one.
The game still looks old despite its updated graphic because the bricks used look the same as the original DX-Ball that was released 25 years ago in 1998, even the power up symbols are the same; however, the resolution of the bricks have been increased to come in line with more modern monitors. You can switch between the modern textures or revert to the original classic textures; however, this does reduce the size of the game board significantly and effectively puts it into a window that's really hard to see unless you decrease the resolution of your monitor to pre-2000 resolutions (e.g. 1024x768 or 800x600). There are several game modes from Normal, Casual, Advanced, Normal (classic rules), Casual (classic rules), Advanced (classic rules), & Equalized. and you can select from 1 to 4 players
If you enjoy breakout games and especially retro looking ones, the 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of DX-Ball 2 is well worth getting, especially when it's on sale. It includes all the levels from the original game as well as more levels. Personally I think it's well worth its full price of £10.42 or without the season pass it's £5.19.
The game can become quite difficult to beat as you progress through some of the level sets especially when you have loads indestructible bricks shielding many of the destructible bricks.
Finally I noted that one of the level sets was a copy of the original Blast Thru game (1999) that was created by the developer Rock Solid Software (the creators of Adventures with Chickens) , which is available for free as a standalone s from MyAbaondonware and works with Win 10. (I've not had the opportunity to see if it works with Win 11 yet.

the soundtrack reminds me a little of the music in cracktros, keygens, and exe patchers. if you were born in the 80s or 90s and had a pc but missed this game, you may enjoy it just for the aesthetic. i always put the shareware/demo of this game on every pc i got my hands on as a kid.
