Booted up Dragon’s Lair expecting retro charm, got a medieval version of Simon Says that punishes you like you owe it money. The animation is gorgeous in that Saturday morning cartoon way, but the gameplay aged about as well as milk in July. Cool to experience once just to say you did it, but after a few runs I felt like I was being farmed for content by the game itself. Wouldn’t recommend unless you enjoy pain as a hobby.

I remember watching this game in a movie or serie or whatever when i was a child, found this game somewhere and i was like cool it's the game from tv. I shoved a coin and got a game over in 5 seconds.
I felt robbed, now i have infinite coins and i am the one robbing the game. Somehow they managed to make a princess even more obnoxious than peach.

I'm sure this has been a revolutionary concept in the arcade back in the 80s, but either my reaction times are way too slow, or Dirk the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ just doesn't want to do what he's supposed to, most likely the former. Either way, i can't say it has aged well with its gameplay (if you can call it that, for how minimal it is), and i think this was simply just meant for the arcade machines and not home computers. Perhaps it would be more playable with a joystick, but i don't have one, so i wouldn't know. It's practically an interactive film where you have to click the right direction or attack at a very precise timing. Granted, idk if i really should be giving it a negative review because i knew what i was getting and therefore i'm criticising the game for what it's supposed to be. So, to sum it up, seemed like an interesting idea, but i can't say i'm good at it, nor that i have too much motivation to keep trying. It's interesting and inventive for sure, but not for me. However, if that sounds like your kinda thing, then you might want to grab it and give it a try. At least it's guaranteed to be better than that garbage that was the NES version of the game, that i also haven't played, and never will, the AVGN episodes told me enough.

This game is almost great and the art-style is fantastic. Hard as ♥♥♥♥ (even on easy) but still fun. Though the achievements are glitched, specifically the Flawless achievement and for PC users, you'll have mess with the Registry Editor to reenable it to keep track if you're successful or not on a new playthrough and if you're not, you have close the game and do the whole thing again the till you're successfully play the game without dying, regardless of settings. I do hope Digital Leisure will be able to update their games again with fixing out some the bugs.

Yep, it's just like the coin-op laserdisk i used to play in the 80s. There, it sucked quarters (as it was designed to) due to unreasonable timing requirements to make the correct combination of moves. Here, it sucks sanity. Avoid, unless you enjoy nostalgic mental punishment.

Als "Spiel" ist Dragons Lair absolut grauenhaft, damals schon, heute immer noch. Solitaire, Minesweeper oder Schiffe versenken machen mehr Spaß. Spart euch die Zeit und schaut euch ein Video an, reicht völlig. This game is broken, I would suggest not buying it unless you want to be frustrated. The "Falling Platforms" level (the later one with 9 floors to exit on) has a bug which prevents the level from being completed. And when you run out of lives and continue, you will always re-start on that same level, requiring that you eventually start a new game, which will end the same way. Most astonishing is that in the "Watch Game" mode, the DEMO ITSELF cannot complete that level, but it does complete ALL the other levels, which proves that it's a bug and you're not just "doing it wrong". It's very disappointing to buy this game which I remember from my youth and not be able to finish it because of a bug. I have contacted Digital Leisure about this issue but have not received any response.

This is recommended to those who understand what this game is. To put it simply, it's an animated short film where you have to perfectly execute the prompts on-screen (in the modern version) to win the game. In the classic version, there are no prompts and you have to figure it out, which is damn near impossible unless you're an ancient wizard that was alive in 1983 and knew the secrets of this archaic "game". That being said, as a big fan of Don Bluth, this is enjoyable just to mess around with and see his stellar animation. While this game is a neat relic of its time, I don't know how much that will matter to younger audiences when confronted with the frustration of its "gameplay".

I was impressed how playing with the hints turned on would train the player to memorize the precise timing necessary to play at the original hard mode. i.e. If you can beat the game on hard mode with the hints turned off, you have beaten the game as if you were standing in an arcade in the 1980s. So, if you remember being fascinated yet frustrated at it back then, give it a try again with the hints turned on. Because the overall game's animation from start to a successful finish doesn't take hours upon hours, Dragon's Lair can be beaten with hints turned on and THEN reattempted with hints turned off without you having to dedicate grueling weeks, months, or years to achieve your goal.

On the minus side, even when the hints are turned off, the overlay is still faintly visible in the lower center of the screen.

Dragon's Lair é um arcade. Um arcade típico dos anos 80. E, portanto, ele não perdoa. No arcade, 1 ficha te dava 3 vidas... É um jogo só de QTE, com tempo pra reação de menos de 1 segundo, muitas vezes. Era estupidamente comum as pessoas durarem segundos jogando... O que fazia que qnd alguém fosse realmente bom (ou tivesse decorado muito bem decorado as salas), juntava uma torcida gigantesca atrás do cara, galera vibrando coisa de doido!

Se vc não viveu essa fase, talvez não dê tanta graça, mas a importância histórica e artística dele é inegável.

Ele consiste em vc assistir um desenho animado dos anos 80, com gráficos e efeitos sonoros típicos dos desenhos dessa época, e que depende do seu tempo de reação em QTE em salas sequenciais pra avançar. Não tem história: é um cara avançando num castelo pra salvar uma princesa. E ponto, acabou.

Tem alguns reviews falando que foi mal-portado. Mentira. É exatamente a mesma experiência do arcade, inclusive com o mesmo grau de frustração e raiva. O que significa que não é um jogo para qualquer um, tendo um game design que já não se vê mais.

Em resumo, se vc tá afim de passar um nervoso, gastar neurônio decorando sala, assistir um desenho animado dos anos 80 ou se vc quer juntar os amigos pra abrir umas cervejas e saquinho de amendoim fazendo uma boa e velha competição de high score, vc achou seu novo jogo favorito.

Se vc não tá procurando exatamente isso, procure outra coisa.

Dragon's Lair is an amazing retro game that was ahead of it's time. I have to give this game a lot of respect after going through and learning to master this game. You play as Dirk, a knight trying to save the princess who just screams "help me" and keeps getting dragged off deeper and deeper into the lair until you finally confront the dragon. Also every room has unique death scenes for every step you can mess up on, some of them are quite hilarious. The experience was fun and difficult, and felt especially challenging to get some of the achievements. I had a blast with this masterpiece of a game. I encourage everyone to try it.

Pretty good version of this arcade classic.
The visuals are good quality, which is what this game is really about. It was hand-drawn animation at by top tier animators.

Good options to set to arcade mode (skip to a new room if you die) or home mode (keep playing each room until you succeed), option to show correct inputs or not show them (they weren't shown in the original), and to continue (the original arcade version had no continue option, meaning you only had 5 lives to win, otherwise you had to start over!).

The game auto-saves if you quit, which isn't clear right away, but when you start again it will ask if you want to continue or restart.

It would be nice to have the option to completely remove the on-screen buttons when the prompts are turned off. These weren't on the original version, and aren't really useful. You should be using a keyboard or gamepad, you'll never succeed trying to click on-screen buttons in time.
A room select option would be nice too, to skip right to a particular part of the game.

If you're completely new to this game, it may not be for you. This was a big deal when it was released and it's great for nostalgia value or for 80s arcade enthusiasts. It's just a bunch of quick-time events so it may not be for you if you're looking for more depth of gameplay.

Questo titolo è stato uno dei primi ad unire l'animazione tradizionale al videogioco.
Nato per i cabinati arriva e rimane solo a pochi appassionati e nostalgici del genere Arcade.
Giocherete nei panni del cavaliere Kirk, non un vero eroe alla Disney ma sicuramente un ottimo protagonista. La missione consisterà nel salvare la principessa Daphne dalle grinfie di un drago. Kirk dovrà affrontare ogni insidia del castello, fino a raggiungere la tana in cui si trova la grande lucertola, ucciderla, strapparne la chiave dal collo e aprire la gabbia in cui è rinchiusa la nostra principessa in attesa. Semplice, no?

Le jeu "Die and retry" par excellence, avec une espérance de vie d'environ 3 secondes.
Chaque déplacement doit être fait à la seconde près, et sans indication, on s'approche plus de la torture que du plaisir de jouer, mais on se doit d'apprécier le travail graphique et d'imagination. Duncan a beau mourir 587.309 fois, on aime voir les animations de chacun de nos échecs.

Seul featuer qu'il manque : avoir, en jeu, un compteur de $/€ pour se rendre compte de ce que jeu aurait couté en mode arcade :)

I loved this game so much! It was hard yes, but despite all the deaths this game is more than worth it. Though yeah, the price is a bit much for this and the other games in the pack so it might be best to wait for a sale, but the game itself is super fun, especially after the first playthrough. There are a couple glitches though, as the cool patch they gave for quality of life has, at least with the other games, messed with the timings and broke some gameplay, and I think broke some death animations as I noticed when getting the max score run and the animation for missing the very last input was very wrong, so thank goodness for the watch game option so you can see all the animations regardless of glitches. I did end up getting the max score achievement and no deaths achievements with a few tries, so it isn't gamebreaking, unlike Space Ace sadly, find my review there to see why and how to fix it. But yeah, if you get this game, it is super fun, and I highly recommend you play without the move guide, as the move guide just makes you focus on that instead of seeing the gorgeous visuals which tell you how to react in their own special way.

I tried to play it just to be in touch with the classics. And I can't find the process pleasing. The animations are beatiful, but short and don't combine well. The button press timing are very short and almost unplayable without the hints. I wonder what a cash grab it was back in the 80's arcades.
Near the end I stuck with "9 platform bug" ( see the descussions) and can't finish the game.

A fun retro FMV game, but it's buggy. Screen freezes occasionally, but the really irritating bug freezes the screen, followed by the score counter spinning up. When restarting the game at that point, the saved game is lost.

Ни в коем разе не хочу оскорбить наследие Дона Блута, автора любимого мною в детстве "Все псы попадают в рай". На этом мультике я ревел, как сучка. На этой игре я горел, как сучка.

В целом нет ничего такого странного, что мультипликатор решил попробовать себя в геймдеве. Даже сейчас Dragon's Lair остаётся уникальным проектом как своего, так и нашего времени. Этот реликт заслуживает место на страницах истории... но он не для современных устройств.

[b]Что вообще такое Dragon's Lair?[/b]
Это интерактивное кино, нарисованное бывшим мультипликатором Disney Доном Блуто, сюжет которого развивается исключительно через QTE сегменты. Главный герой - рыцарь Дирк - отправляется в Драконье Логово чтобы спасти чертовски сексуальную принцессу Дафни и победить дракона. Игра была выпущена в 1983 году на аркадных автоматах.
Дирк (наш персонаж) и в туалет сходить не сможет без помощи игрока, поэтому у играющего складывается ощущение не только полного контроля над персонажем, но и своего рода ощущение самостоятельного создания истории Драконьего Логова.
Между прочим, игра без подсказок выглядит довольно хардкорной... но порой чертовски не интуитивной.

К чему тогда негативный отзыв? Весь мой бугурт сводится к ранней мысли, что игра не предназначена для современных систем. Игре простительно что сцены резко и грубо сменяют друг друга, ведь все они рандомизируются между собой, чтобы каждый [i]забег[/i] хотя бы маломальски отличался друг от друга. Но действия персонажа, скорость его движений, скачки между активными зонами QTE превращают игру в лютую кашу, где:

[*]а - порой сложно сообразить, что вообще происходит на экране, и как действия игрока привели к такому повороту.
[*]б - просто невозможно насладиться проработкой сцен и анимациями.

На первые пару прохождений всё это ещё простительно, ведь игра позволяет после растраты всех жизней продолжить с последней сцены, но с потерей набранных очков. Но! Но если вы решили пройти игру на Платину, то приготовьтесь к аду. Вся моя нелюбовь к игре появилась исключительно из-за достижений пройти её без единой смерти и с максимальным количеством очков. Сложность в достижении подобного достигалась тем, что некоторые сцены отражались, из-за чего менялась сторона нажатий в QTE сегментах, да и сама мышечная память ни раз подводила, давала сбой или заставляла нажимать заранее (что игра прощала крайне редко). Попытки за попытками, лажа ближе к концу прохождения или в случайные моменты из раза в раз просто раздражали, превратив финальные два достижения в нудную рутину. В итоге всё решило банальное ограничение FPS.

Игра исключительно для наслаждения, ибо только так можно полюбить её и насладиться всей красотой Dragon's Lair. Для ачивхантеров это будет то ещё испытание... и возможное рождение неприязни.

This is my first time playing this game. The experience is so unique, I’m loving it and is the best memory / reflex game I ever played in my life!

I enjoy more to play it in difficult mode and without the visual guide – aid as I feel it changes the crushing spirit of the game and enjoy to play it as it was enjoyed by 80’s kids as myself.

If I had seen this game in it’s age in an arcade room when I was kid for sure I would have been heavily mind blown as much as for the graphics than for the fast paced addictive gameplay. Is crazy that nowadays still feels like playing a beautiful sword & sorcery cartoon.

Lucky me who have the chance to play this trilogy without having to put coins in the machine for every time I get killed.

I haven’t had any glitch problems yet, plays fluidly.

If you feel curious about this game and find it in discount as I did, don’t think about it and buy it now.

Dragon's Lair is one of the best Arcade Games of all time! It's simple QTE gameplay, beautiful Animation done by non other than ex-Disney Animator Don Bluth (In A Land Before Time, Titan A.E., Anastasia) and insane difficulty make it a real good and fun challenge! (Daphne is also a definite highlight)

The Port is not the best: Some animation cuts too fast like at the end of an stage, where not even the Music can finish and it is not optimized that well. Still, it works and has some fancy features like Extras, a Move Guide and Move Beep (which makes a sound when pressing a button to know that it was the right or wrong button) and also the choice to play the Arcade Version or the Laserdisc Version (I recommend the Laserdisc Version as it has more Animation and is more fleshed out).

Overall, Dragon's Lair is an great Arcade Game worth playing for it's challenge and animation. So go and save Daphne from the Dragon's Lair!

very disappointed to be giving a thumbs down. I LOVE Dragon's Lair. I was not alive when DL was in arcades and I have never had "the true experience" on a dedicated machine. However, I had this game on my DSi back in 2012. And I played the heck out of it! Truly a fantastic arcade title, and it has some of the best art & animations in gaming history.

This port is stinky. Bare minimum effort. It's sad.

Digital Leisure hasn't done much to improve this product since release. Gamepad support is not completely intact, which is absurd for a game like this. You can do everything with a gamepad except anything relating to high scores. So that means, once you reach the end of your play session, you have to bust out the KB+M to enter your name, or even proceed back to the title screen. And I do mean keyboard AND mouse, since you have to manually click, so there's an accessibility issue there (and also just quite annoying UI design).

They added an optional overlay which is a nice novelty, I guess, but not very useful since it reduces the screen area by a sizable degree. There aren't many other options. You can choose between 3 lives or 5 lives, arcade mode or home mode, guides on or off, and that's about it. Cheap animations on the title screen, lack of options, and unskippable fluff/credits make this like a very lazy port.

EDIT: This next section references some performance issues, which the game did initially have in my experience. I have since resolved these problems and the game runs much better. It plays like I'd expect Dragon's Lair to. if you're reading this and trying to figure out why the transition time is so slow and input windows are so choppy, or if are worried your PC can't run this game or is too old for modern games: you absolutely NEED an SSD to play this game. This game essentially has all of its cutscenes stored in its game files as MP4s and does not load them into memory until the last possible instant it needs them, meaning your disk I/O directly affects the speed at which your game will run. This ruins the game as you're only given a limited window to perform actions.

To be quite honest, I think this game ran much better on my DSi, with its 0.133 GHz CPU and 16MB of RAM. Performance is a huge issue, which I never thought I'd say about an FMV game from 1983. The animation is choppy, and the game has a really tough time transitioning between two scenes. For example, animation will freeze or sometimes be cut out altogether to keep the pace up. That makes the whole experience feel cheapened and frustrating. This can also happen while the game is waiting for input, which means there are going to be many cases where you miss and it's not your fault. That defeats the whole purpose of Dragon's Lair.

Selling old games that can be emulated is a tricky business. But like GabeN says, "piracy is a service failure". I would have gladly paid much more for a modern Dragon's Lair port that doesn't have these unforgivable frustrations, but that's not what this piece of software is.

Я, конечно, слышал, что она сложная, но был разочарован тем, что там еще и сцены дублируются зеркально. Об этом я, наверное, забыл, ведь игру на деле я видел в миллионе видеоигровых эссе. The 80's are calling. And you can answer without all those quarters or game tokens that you blew waiting in line to play this game without an idea in your head on what to do next. I think there was a MACH 3 sit-in console right next to it the first time I played. A better-off friend of mine actually bought a cabinet version of this game, so I eventually did learn how to beat it. But man, was it something just watching this thing in demo mode in the arcade.

Siempre quise probar este juego. No me quiero imaginar lo que era en arcade y la cantidad de dinero que se debieron comer esas máquinas.

Hay poco que reseñar, es un producto de su época en el que claramente lo que destaca es su apartado artístico (que homenajea de manera increíble a las películas de Disney de la época) ya que la jugabilidad son quicktime events sin fallos, ya que sino se hace perfecto se pierde.

Unfortunately, I can't recommend this.
This is another case of "good game, bad port."
I've already played the original arcade machine before at a convention, so I do have a general idea of how the game should look and play.

Sadly, there are no options, and Steam Overlay doesn't work properly.
Also, the menus are hard to navigate + often unresponsive, and in-game inputs often either aren't prompted or registered.

And for a game with such an emphasis on visuals, I kept wondering why the animation looked so weird and fuzzy in-game... I learnt why.
The entire game is a butchered port of a butchered port of an already butchered port. It's essentially a significantly lower-resolution version of the original, topped with being cropped of a cropped of a cropped of the original. Now it makes sense.

This is one of the 80s classics! Go on adventure with Dirk to save the princess! Easy game to play and learn. Once you get the hang of it, you can complete it in under 15 minutes. Getting all the achievements takes a lot longer. Highly recommend this one for nostalgic reasons.

At the time this arcade game was out it probably added to the early 80`s recession the amount on money people pumped into it even trying to beat even one level. Dragon’s Lair es un título de lo más singular provenientes de las clásicas recreativas de los años 70 en los que combina a la perfección una mecánica basada en quick time events y memorización. Ponte el casco en forma de condón, coge la espada y coge ese chaleco de malla para acto seguido, ir en pos de tu querida damisela en apuros.

La historia es de lo más simple que hay. Eres un caballero que se dentra en un castillo en busca de una damisela en apuros que está siendo salvaguardada por un dragón el cual deberás de derrotar para poder rescatarla.

El personaje, sorprendentemente es muy carismático. No cuenta con un pasado, objetivos presonales, desarrollo de personaje ni diálogos. Sin embargo, gracias a la aanimación y el doblaje de este, no puedes evitar sentir cierto apego a medida que vas pasando los distintos niveles que conforman este título.

El diseño de niveles es, con diferencia, lo que más me ha encandilado del título. Cada uno de los niveles que realizas, son cada uno más particular que el anterior. Escenario de lo más variopintos que cuentan con obstáculos muy originales.

El gameplay es de lo más sencillo que he jugado en mucho tiempo. Como he mencionado en la introducción, est título consiste en distintos niveles que siguen su curso por medio de los mismo quicktime events sin ningún tipo de variación. La primera vez te sientes un tanto abrmado por el corto tiempo de reacción, sin embargo, una vez pasado el título por prmera vez, el título es de lo más sencillo que hay pues solo requiere de memoria. Por otro lado, he visto que hay varias personas que dicen que el tiempo de respuesta de los controles no está del todo accertado...por mi parte, el tiempo de respuesta es más que aceptable, no he notado en ningún momento un malfuncionamiento ni nada fuera de lo normal.

En conclusión, ¿Recomendaría este título? Por supuesto. Llevo un tiempo queriendo probar este título desde que me vi totalmente encandilado por su estética setentera. Eso sí, tras haber conseguido el platino de este título, mantengo mi crítica sobre el logro de conseguir la puntuación máxima. No tiene ningún sentido que una run perfecta tenga una puntuación total menor que una partida en la que has muerto dos veces frente al dragón para poder rascar hasta unos 6000 puntos extra... completamente inverosímil. Aun así, me lo he pasado en grande con el título y, aunque pillarle el truco es fácil, te sorprenderá la cantidad de horas que le has echado sin darte cuenta.
