Nostalgic game for me. I was 10 years old when this game came out. I remember playing a demo of it on a demo CD but never owning it. Years ago it popped in my head and I went down a rabbit hole to find this game title and then found it on steam!
Graphics are 1996 quality. Gameplay is challenging at first. Different civilizations to choose but nothing unique about the differences.

어릴 때도 꽤나 재밌었던 것 같은데 콜로니를 성장시키는 재미와 전투가 재미있는 것 같습니다.
영어라서 진입장벽이 있긴 합니다. 다만 RPG처럼 계속 다른 대사가 나오는 건 아니고 역사 뉴스를 빼면 정형화된 문구라서 익숙해지면 괜찮긴 합니다.
단점으로는 1.0 버전으로 게임 중인데 간간히 튕기는 현상이 조금 있네요. 다만 튕길 때 해당 턴이 자동으로 저장은 되는 듯해서 그나마 괜찮습니다.
Loved this game since it came out, bought it on Steam and played it for a while. Since then I haven't been able to start it up anymore, tried a lot of fixes but nothing. Steam won't reimburse either. Buy at your own risk, I highly recommend the game but not on Steam

Alter Klassiker. Spannendes Kolonie Managementsystem. Ich spiele den klassischen Endlos Modus. Ihr landet mit einem Schiff sendet eure Erkunder aus. Paar Runden später trifft euer Kolonieschiff ein das einen Siedler mitbringt. Mit diesem baut ihr eure erste Kolonie auf. Ihr könnt entweder die Kolonie per Hand aufbauen oder den PC das überlassen, auch dauerhaft. Wenn ihr jedoch euch auskennt hinkt der Autoausbau meilenweit hinterher.
Kämpf passieren über eine Art Minischachbrett. 3x4 Felder. Wo ihr Infantrie, Kavallerie und Artillerie ins Feld schickt. Je nachdem wie gut eurer Kommandant ausgebildet ist habt ihr eine bestimmte Anzahl an Angriffen zur Verfügung. Was die Kämpfe besonders interessant macht ist das ihr Angriffsboni bekommt wenn ihr mit unterschiedlichen Einheiten angreift und auch von der Flanke attackiert. Unabhängig von euer militärischen Forschung.
Über ein Lategamegebäude könnt ihr bei jeder eurer Kolonien dann Geld in die Forschung pumpen. Hier gibt es Angriffverbesserungen als auch Defenseverbesserungen für jede Einheit und auch für Kommandanten. Die einzelnen Einheiten baut ihr in euren Forts aus.
Auch gibt es im Menü einen eigenen Kampfsimulator wo ihr euch einen Kampf einstellen könnt und gut üben könnt. Besonders interessant ist der Umstand das ihr die feindliche Armee nicht komplett vernichten müsst. Um einen Sieg zu erringen reicht es aus das Feld bei der Fahne eurer Gegner zu besetzen. Sobald ihr das Feld habt, habt ihr ebenfalls auch gewonnen.
Auch könnt ihr custom Maps starten und es euch sehr einfach einstellen.
Conquest of the New World has a wonderful computer player engine from the mid nineties. The custom games are very enjoyable.
To be perfectly honest, this game has two distinct lovable attributes. "Conquest of the New World" is a nostalgic guilty pleasure for sure, but there's a little something here for contemporary boys and girls.
The first reason to indulge me in this time capsule's value is the music. The music is fantastic! When I first played this beloved history-lesson-strategy-thingy on CD-ROM all my friends and I could agree that the "John Wayne" and "adrenaline pumping," music during an early turn-based battle involving a Native Tribe was amazing. It sounds like a 50s western movie/TV show. I also love the Scottish Bagpipes in the battles with British troops fighting! Think mini-hot-water-music.
Remember to always flank your enemy. charge, and use artillery whenever you can!
Take in mind that when I loved and played this stupid game the most was when the turn execution command took around 2-4 minutes. Double Speed CD-ROM wasn't too bad sometimes, depending on how far along the game was. The "Annals of History" mini-essays that came up after hitting the End Turn command would often have music that lasted just long enough for you to read every little historical tidbit on the screen and refresh and/or distract you from the interruption in the historical strategic amusements. Somehow my friends and I could endure this wait, with a few foul gestures and abject mockery thrown in for good measure.
This was long before I discovered the Total War People and their amazing work with Medieval:Total War. The only real competitor at the time for me was "Lords of the Realm 2." The lute, whistle, and horns music that plays at the end turn screen is something pleasant I can STILL hear in my dreams sometimes.
The other reason I adore this dated time capsule is the ability to name randomly discovered mountains, rivers, and regions. That's still something missing in so many terrific turn-based-strategy-board-video-PC-game to THIS day! The Civilization games let you name cities, but not mountains or rivers! There just ain't nuthin' like naming a recently discovered mountain after a cute girl that barely knows you exist!
I used to name mountains and rivers I discovered on this game after girls I had a crush on in around 8th-9th Grade (circa 1996-98). I knew I was doing well when I ran out of names and started using random music lyrics. My buddy Steve would simply label each river as "River" and each mountain as "Mountain." NO FUN! The town building aspects of this game are also well designed and set the bar rather high in my video gaming life. Mountain forests with a river running through it often yield crazy amounts of gold. Be prepared to manage and fight over resources with European competitors. Every historical strategy game I've ever played after 1996-97 lives in this time capsule's shadow, complete with the endless history lessons and that lute and horn music.......
One final point, this has an odd political edge to it. The tyranny of low expectations prevails here in a strange way. For some reason, the Native Tribe option is denied the same level of upgrades, even when you chose the Native Tribes as a player option. Take in mind that normal games as the European powers played out well, and Native tribes were more passive and randomly hostile/friendly/neutral. It's only when you play the Native Tribes that you find that you can only upgrade your buildings/units to level 2 when all other players can upgrade everything to level 4 and use artillery. Why can't the Native Tribes at least purchase and/or steal engineers/settlers from their European competitors? Make it FUN! Write your own brutal history of the New World! This was something Syd Meier's Civilization games did well (espcially in Civ 3). After-all, artillery in any 16th century battle is KEY! Why completely deny it to a Native Tribe in a historical strategy game option? Perhaps the trade options could've been different/better for the Native Tribe? Otherwise, what's the point of playing as a Native Tribe if you can't possibly match the European Powers on their terms. The Native Tribe advantage of being able to convert or "federate" other tribes doesn't do much, for some reason. These days, Conquest of the New World has aged well. The micro-manage economies play out well and the ability to rebel from the yoke/tyranny of the European mother country is satisfying and historically pleasing as a Texan American. The bizarre lack of full strength for the player as a Native Tribe is really the only flaw in an otherwise perfect time capsule of what history games were like the 90s CD-ROM era. The emphasis on exploration and survival is strong and enduring in this beloved time capsule of mine....as David Bowie once sang "Time may change me, but I can't change time...." Every time I see the intro and hear the music in this game I'm instantly fifteen years old again. What am I but a mere mortal compared to the Conquest of the New World in all it's glory, horror, history, and influence. Without this particular part of history, I would have never existed to write this silly review!

I love this game. It is not too complicated and moves at the player's speed. This game allows the player to explore the new world, make new discoveries, build a colony and later expand. The player can use diplomacy with other countries and go to war when that when diplomacy fails or you just want to. This is not a game known for graphics or realistic blood and guts. It is a strategy game. Best game ever.
Very enjoyable, I tend to play High native on very hard unlimited turns largest map to make it extra challenging. Trying to get a pack of lvl 100 cavalry brings back memories. Its one of those games where you can do more then just winning. I've made a reservation out of the brittisch, completely surrounding them with my towns and killing everything that moves out.
Oh right gameplay wise for those who ont know this one:
You are an explorer/settler from the old world with a mission to explore the new world. You start turn 1 arriving on the coast of a new map every time you play the game. You have ship with an explorer and a small force of infantry. After 5 turns a ship from the old world arrives with some settlers who want to settle on this new world. Here your struggle begins...
You can set our game as you please, for instace you can enable victory points and limited turns, then aim for exploration and colonies, or aim for combat. Personally I dont like limited turns, there are some things I like to go for that takes longer.
What you probably mainly will be doing, is surviving attacks on your towns, managing and building those towns, build new towns. Conscript an army, defend yourself and also plunder/capture other players towns, and whatever else you want to do.
The town building is divided into resources and buildings that get you those resources. Upgrading the buildings require resources. Depending on where you build you have suitable areas for wood, farming, metals, gold, and even some commercial goods. You balance your resource requirements per town, or you specialise each town and trade goods with eachoter to optimise their needs (one makes a lot of wood, the other is a great farmland). You can choose to micro or macro as much as you want, there is an auto build up settlement button in the town. I personally create gold farms to level up my military and only have my frontier cities diversify and build armies.
The strategies consist of exploring the land early game to find all the resources, so you know where you want to settle and the resources boost your city. First one to find the resources gets the claim. You can capture the claim by placing a unit near it and keeping it there, though...but I like to keep the map clean (the game has a "next" button to go to next unit that hasnt moved yet. I dont like to fill that in with trash). Placing a building right next to the resource also movves the claim to you. So you can get away with not exploring to much if you build right next to the resource.
Next part of your strategy should be finding the gold. Gold is the defining element of your military strenght, since its required to upgrade your troops in the academy. No gold and all your troops just miss their shots while 1 enemy cavalry destroys your whole front line in combat. Yes, get to the gold is the main focus troughout the game. What? there is an enemy town right on the gold vein? Destroy that town and build your own settlement! Or...capture it...but then the town has this silly foreign name.
Final part of strategie is mapcontrol by blockading enemy ships with your own. They cn land troops far away from the front and catch you by surprise. And also catching all the generals trying to move out to colonize. You can use diplomacy to not be at war with every player, usefull if you dont like to fight 30 generals per 10 turns, but instead maybe only about 3-5 per 10 turns. Then after you have a good gold production, and your military is superior, you can continue your mapcontrol beyond their borders. I tend to pick an enemy and raid their cities early game because on difficulty very hard the computer has a ton of resources. An investment of 200 metals can give you a steady income of 200 metals plus the other resources per 10 or so turns, as long as you dont 100% raid a town.
Tactical Combat wise its a 4x3 square, each square holds 6 places. cavalry and artillery hold 2 places and infantry only 1. Cavalry can move 2 squares, infantry 1, and the artillery can only move on the back line but can fire on one of all 3 squares in front of it. Artillery is very vulnerable when troops are close, it gets hit easier. Cavalry is very usefull to occupy a square untill the infantry gets there, infantry is usefull to full up a square with meat, but also it gives you more shots available from that square since you can put 6 infantry on 1 square vs 3 cavalry.
So usually you move in cavalry first, have a skirmish, then move 1 or 2 cavalry back to let your infantry take the space. You want cavalry where you want to take a square fast if the enemy is nof fully stacked there. You dont want you cavalry to fight a aquare with 6 infantry on it. Cavalry is also usfull for flanking, since it can fire after moving. Infantry ends its turn after moving. ince you have limited attacks per turn, I tend to go full cavalry and artillery if playing europe (high native is different) untill i get more then 18 units. Since 18 unitsallows you to put in 9 artillery and 9 cavalry, fully occupying the first 2 squares. By upgrading your general (trough combat or the military academy) you can get more attacks per turn. Every unit you want to shoot, takes an attack. So by focussing fire with your number of attacks, you can take down a flank while tanking another, hoping thaat once you win the flank, you can move your cavalry forwards and shoot the enemy in the side. This does a tremendous amount more dmg then just shooting face to face. Hence the tactical situation is that you want to get a flank on the enemy in that 4x3 aquare battlefield.
So really its a prelude to Rome total war imo. You have the strategy map and an ingame combat. Its great. BTW if you love this one you probably also like imperialism 2.

Game is from the 1990's and is still an epic game. Still has the save limit issue, sadly, especially since pc's have much more space than a cd back then. But definitely worth it then and now. Just think, no more dialup issues if one wants to play online with others. :D

If you haven't played this you haven't lived.
I played this game when I was a kid and I thought I'd give it the old nostalgic go. The game is missing all the quality of life improvement we now take for granted. It crashes all the time, the AI is hit and miss, the save system is needlessly obtuse, and to top it all off it provides precious little explanation for the intricacies of its gameplay. It's still a surprisingly fun game for its age, with lots of flair and charm provided by the retro graphics, the immersive music and soundscape, a simplistic but solid tactical system, and the brilliant addition of the daily (weekly?) gazette with its witty and informative articles. Expect some frustration, but also lots of enjoyment.

This game was released in 1996 and I played it extensively for several years at that time. The game is about colonizing the new world. You start with a ship that lands on the new continent and drops off scouts, a small army and settlers. Then the fun begins and you explore the continent and found your first pioneer settlement. This settlement can grow up, new houses built and expandet. Finally, more settlements are founded and a large colony is formed.
The graphics are dated today, but still beautiful. The gameplay is very well implemented for strategiests in round mode. There is a large map with Indian villages and colonies. Mountains and rivers must be named by the first explorer, and there is a battle mode for battles between the colonists´ armies and the Indians.
English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch fight for supremacy. Indians rebel, some tribes are friendly others hostile.
There is a recourse system. So Conquest of the New World is also an simple economic simulation.
I recommend this game because it´s well designed for the time and still a lot of fun today.

It's an old turn based strategy game. The map is randomly generated. There are bonus sites to find in the game that aren't in every game. Like the Temple of War, Ancient Ruins, and the Lost Dutchman Mine. There are also production bonuses if you're close to certain items like Natural Rice Fields or copper veins or medicinal herbs. You can trade 3 items a turn with nearby friendly tribes. Being able to trade 3 crops for 3 wood or 3 metal is very beneficial early in the game. You can choose various bonuses when you select your leader as well. It's a game you can play over and over again.

A wonderful game in the 1990s -- and the Mac version on Steam seems to have fixed the late-game crashes that used to plague it on Macs back then (and still plagues the PC Steam version).
Way too tedious for my taste. You have to drag your units every single turn to the place you want them to go to.
They should walk to the designated destination on the map where you told them to go 3 turns ago. Move dude, i dont wanna waste my time looking after your idle ass again. But noo... you have to do this every single turn.
Also the AI miracliously always gets way stronger colonys than you. Takes way too long to do anything. Your own colonies are so damn slow in getting ressources and growing in poppulation. Meanwhile my neighbour has 3 times the popp and double the amount of buildings i have. Also the building space is very limited so i couldnt build more stuff to increase my growth. I dont get it... even though i settled next to cornfields as i thought this would help feed my settlers.
Like this ♥♥♥♥ makes no sense. I just hate these reviews who say this game is the greatest even though, it is obviously a waste of time. The games systems are fine on paper, but become dull in practice. Sad because the game has style otherwise i wouldnt have bought it.

the game itself is deceptively simple, but can be as difficult as you'd like by playing as a native. yes, the game lacks refined controls we've grown to expect from strategy games over the past 25 years but it is still a great game.
Recommended to fans of the 4x genre, or historically-inclined wargamers. This is an oldschool 4x set in the age of exploration and mercantalism (it'll annoy all the right people). Something of a variation of the civilization formula, except colony layout is player-directed, and the battle system is not as abstracted - there is a 3x4 grid that regular and militia units are deployed on and player-directed in combat. The downside to more player agency is that expansion of colonies leads to greater time spent in colony management; similarly, as the game extends and warfare/raids increase in frequency and intensity, there is more time spent in battle resolution. There is an auto resolution option for battles, but it can yield anomalous results.
Useful and short tutorial, decent scenarios, and randomized maps of "the new world", with variable geography which provides for replayability. You can find the old manual online if you want, but for the most part you can learn the key mechanics from the tutorial and experimentation. Simple mechanics with surprising depth. Exploration of the new world is fun - the first player to discover new natural terrain features (mountains, rivers, regions) gets the honour of naming them, and the names persist through the game - adds extra incentive to explore and character to each game, particularly in multiplayer. Of note: multiplayer actually provides for an engaging hotseat experience if friends are so inclined. Declare independence from your respective Mother Countries together and cheer each other on as the regulars arrive to blockade your ports and put down your insurrection.
Game still stands up tall. Approving grognard noises.
This is a great older game, definitely worth it when it is on sale.
A word of caution: This steam version crashed on me about once/hour before I used the memory fix that HessX described in one of the discussions. I would recommend looking up that fix and switching the memory available from 16 to 32 MB; after I did that I have not had any troubles with crashes.

Easy to use, use the tutorial first, then have fun playing. Only down-side is the lack of scenarios from the original game cd. Not a major drama, as i have the disc, and can easily add to the pc local game file.

Well first off this was my very first game growing up as a kid. What i like about this game is you can name all land marks you discover and every city you settle. I love the battles its like your playing chess. there is so much i just like about this game. you can have more then one person playing with you on the same PC can get very fun make trades with other players and the AI which i think is good enough to make the game a challenge. its better the civilization i think.

Le jeu a mis du temps à se stabiliser (attention en particulier à ne pas avoir trop de parties sauvegardées) mais le fonctionnement est correct (encore quelques plantages épisodiques). Mais la qualité du jeu est toujours au rendez-vous...
The game looks as if it was created 15 or 20 years ago. There is no way to adjust
sound once the game has started, and you can't close the game if you hit esc to
adjust your computer volume. You have to ctl-alt-del and use the task manager.
The game itself is not difficult, but I can't recommend it.

I found this game in '97. I have managed to find it for every system and OS I have owned since then. I would say it is it's simplicity and replayability. A great turn-based builder/conqueror.

I used to play this game on my Acer desktop with a 15" CRT and built in speakers. It had a CD-ROM drive. This game came on a CD. CD's were cool. You ever wondered why they called them Compact Discs? Well, you remember Laser Discs? They were as big as a house! The CD was so much smaller and held stuff like data. 600MB, 650MB, or even 700MB! Wow! That's a lot of storage. Not even FlexTape can store that much MB's! Anyway, they packaged this up nice in a DOS BOX emulator launcher and it actually runs on Winblows Tien. Which is rare, because most things don't run on Winblows Tien. Even purpose built software like MicroShaft Werd. If you played this, and you liked it way back in the 90's, then you will probably still like it. It's surprising how well it holds up. There was a lot of stuff in this game that we still see in strategy games today! I've had one crash to desktop in 15 hours of play. It autosaves every turn, so I didn't lose anything. This game was ahead of its time in a lot of ways. You'll find it dated if you try to move the map with WASD and you end up in the menu. Don't press WASD to move the map. It doesn't work. One of those keys is "GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE MENU." But one of those keys, maybe even the STOP WHAT YOU"RE DOING AND GO TO MENU also drops a save. So just click continue saved game and you're right back in. Wow, this is a wall of text. It's probably a lot of useless information, too. I should format it into paragraphs, but that sounds like work. Yeah, give Quicksilver some money. Buy this. It's worth the $10

Old Game yet great building and strategy.
Zuletzt in den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts gespielt. Damals fand ich es gut. Also nochmal reinschauen, ob es mit neuen Spielen mithalten kann. Und es macht immer noch Spaß ! Einmal gestartet und erst 4 Stunden später wieder auf die Uhr geschaut. Eine echte Zeitmaschine. Natürlich ist die Grafik total veraltet. Aber im Vergleich mit vielen neuen Spielen kann es beim Spielspaß mithalten. Weil das Konzept und die Umsetzung einfach passen.

I have always loved this game. It is an exploration, build colony, and conquer the other countries colonizing the world. BE prepared to spend a LOT of time on a game if you play with unlimited turns(I like those the best). The custom part of the map creation is cool and I am trying to figure out how to get a bit different maps each time, whether it be ONE Giant island or a couple smaller islands. I used to play it a fair amount on an older computer but it is nice to play the game on a modern computer through steam and DOS BOX. I do recommend tweaking the 'dosboxConquest' Conf file so that the window you play in is bigger( I have my windowresolution set to 1600x900 which works nicely.
OVERALL The game is great but because it is turn based it will take a longer time to play than most real time strategy games, but easier to stop at anytime and continue later.

This is an old game I firt bought around 20 years ago. I enjoyed it a lot then and still enjoy it. The controls are very basic and the graphics are poor by today's standards but it is still fun to play and does take strategy to conquer the new world. For $10 I'm very happy with my purchase, I'm only irritated that I had to purchase the game a second time because my current machines don't support the old software.
The first time I played this in 1997, I was 11. Windows 95 was the rage, Tony Blair had just become PM and I had little inclination towards the American colonial period. Here I am in my 30's reliving the nostalgia. A classic that deserves reverence!
Un jeu simple mais pas simplet, avec mode de combat original et ce qu'il faut de gestion et de stratégie militaire. Il a graphiquement mal vieilli, on aurait apprécié un mode batailles multijoueurs mais tout est resté dans son jus depuis les années 90. Malgré tout, reste un de mes titres préférés depuis tout ce temps, et le recommande donc aux amateurs du genre [i]vintage[/i].
1. Это настолько древняя игра, что прежде чем её запустить возникает вопрос, а запустится ли она на нашей машине с 10-й виндой? Запустится, через досбокс.
2. Компьютерами, на которых запускалась эта игра в 90-х можно пугать школьников. Это динозавр пошаговых игр с тематикой о колонизации Нового света. Пиксели так остро режут глаз, что приходится капать альбуцит. Игровой процесс весьма примитивен, но это даже не классика, это мумия гейминга.
3. Изюминка в динамичном мини-сражении, которое можно опробовать отдельно в главном меню, напоминает мини настольную игру, где каждая из трёх фигурок ходит и стреляет по-своему. Но именно эта штука весьма увлекательнее самой игры.
4. Страшно подумать, как это оказалось в Steam, но игра явно для тех, кто уже стал геймером, когда Ельцин сидел на синьке.
Wspaniała gra strategiczno-ekonomiczna. Ekspansja, badanie nowych terenów, zakładanie nowych kolonii i bitwy na styl szachów. Dla miłośników retro to gra, którą trzeba mieć :)
excelent game from back then. countless hours of fun...
Such a shockingly simple game, yet still fun after all these years. And as an added bonus, the historical trivia that shows up after each turn is really interesting.

First bought this game in the summer of 2001 on the discount rack in Staples and played it almost nonstop on my Packard Bell Pentium PC. Sames true now as was then - this game is FUN; forget fancy graphics when you have clever animations.
