very fun! i like it much more than transport tycoon deluxe :)
Don't buy this game until a mod on smarter ai routing, Because you be dealing with nothing working, grid locks and trains crashing into each other more than actually building a rail network.
:)
I played this game many times and won it is fun when you realize your in business to win you need business knowledge to win.
It's my literal childhood for me!
Still seems fresh and neat even for having blocks of all things. It's a masterpiece on itself.
Same guy who made Rollercoaster Tycoon games btw!
A note to all player who wish to play this game on steam agen you WILL need OpenLoco to run it
Pathetic old crap.
Top 10 Greatest Games of All Time! Isometric heaven! Killer soundtrack! Pure nostalgia! Be sure to setup OpenLoco after installing.
Joguinho bom...
Jogo inteligente!
good
Just buy Open Tdd it's better
An underrated gem from the creator of RollerCoaster Tycoon, and now it's time to give it some love.
Chris Sawyer's Locomotion is a game from the eponymous creator of RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 and 2, and spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon. While those three games are regarded as legendary PC games for the system, this game ended up being very underrated and overlooked at launch because it simply came out too late for its own good. Despite being 5 years younger than it, the game aesthetically looks the same as RCT1. This may sound like an absurd criticism in this day and age where games with pixel-art graphics are everywhere, but back in 2004, not having the latest and greatest graphics was seen as a shortcoming of the game developer rather than a design choice to complement the game's natural feel. Add to the fact that OpenTTD had launched earlier that year and is literally free, and Chris Sawyer's Locomotion ended up being left out in favor of better looking PC games.
In the years since, Chris Sawyer's Locomotion has undergone a bit of a renaissance as people are generally now more looking to look at the game's positive aspects. The OpenRCT2 team is also working on OpenLoco, which as the name would suggest, is to Chris Sawyer's Locomotion what OpenRCT2 is to RollerCoaster Tycoon 2. I'm glad to see that the game is slowly getting the love that it deserves, and if you're a fan of either OpenTTD, RCT1, or RCT2, then it's time to give this game an honest chance. Since OpenLoco is also in development, it'll only get better as time goes on.
NOTE: Just like RCT1 and RCT2, the game does sometimes crash if you play it on Steam. I experienced a fair amount of crashing with the default game resolution, but as soon as I bumped it up to the middle resolution, I was able to play through the entire rest of the game without a single crash. Additionally, if you plan on playing OpenLoco, this will be a non-issue entirely.
As a successor to Transport Tycoon, Chris Sawyer's Locomotion plays a lot like OpenTTD. In fact, there's a lot of quality of life improvements to this game that OpenTTD still doesn't have to this day including the fact that you can build stations underground, you can create bridges with turns in them, and you can actually rotate the camera (hallelujah)! Building underground is also easier because you're no longer constrained to a flat, straight line of track like you are in OpenTTD - If you found building a transporting network to be enjoyable in OpenTTD, you'll find it just as fun to build it in Chris Sawyer's Locomotion as well.
This game is also easier to pick up and learn than OpenTTD due to the fact that it has a proper tutorial and beginner-level scenarios to help you figure out the game rather than OpenTTD which throws you to the wolves and tells you to figure it out. Given that the game is 10 years younger than its sibling game, the UI is also cleaner and it's more obvious what certain buttons do. This game even has a tram system, which OpenTTD doesn't. All of the same things we loved about Chris Sawyer's previous games are also here. This game has a better main menu theme than either RCT1 or RCT2 - Yeah, I said it. Fight me.
In spite of this, it's impossible to ignore its shortcomings to OpenTTD. Unlike OpenTTD, there is no random map generator (there is a scenario editor, though you don't have that much control over what map the game generates in it), sandbox options, or a way to play with the AI disabled. This means that OpenTTD has a considerable edge over this game in terms of being "turn your brain off" games as you'll always need to have some focus on this game at all times. Additionally, the Performance Index system heavily encourages you to only use trains and ignore every other transport type entirely, because it's based on the total number of cargo you deliver relative to the distance it traveled to reach there.
Chris Sawyer's Locomotion is a good game, and it's worthy of accompanying the other games in Sawyer's repertoire of iconic tycoon games. It came out too late for its own good, but OpenLoco is starting to give it the attention it deserved from the beginning, and it's always very cheap to buy. If you're a fan of either OpenTTD, or the first two RCT games, you should give this one a go. If nothing else, then just for the curiosity of this game that doesn't get that much attention, but you will find a lot to love about it like Sawyer's other games. Of course, downloading OpenLoco is also a good idea as well.

This was one of my first PC games. Graphics, music, and gameplay still hold up well today.
great game
All hail to Chris Sawyer!
Fun
I like trains.
THIS GAME! I WAS RAISED WITH THIS GAME! It helped me develop my love for trains and for transport development. The graphics still holds up with amazing sprite work. Please, give it a try and let this gem bring you back in time to a easier time.
Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion, developed by Chris Sawyer and published by Atari, is a game that builds on the legacy of Transport Tycoon while attempting to expand its ambitions. At its heart, it is a transport management simulator where the player constructs and oversees a vast network of railways, roads, shipping lanes, and air routes, all with the goal of moving people and goods efficiently across a growing landscape. The premise is deceptively simple, but the complexity emerges through the depth of logistics, the careful balancing of costs, and the long-term consequences of design decisions. From the very first tracks laid down, it becomes clear that this is a game about systems and interconnections, where efficiency and foresight determine success.
One of the game’s strongest qualities lies in how it models transportation over time. Vehicles age, break down, and must be replaced, while industries grow or decline based on supply and demand. Cities expand when properly serviced, creating a sense of progression and impact. The historical timeline gives added depth, as players begin with rudimentary vehicles and gradually transition into more advanced technologies, from early steam engines to modern jets. This evolution adds a layer of strategy, since planning for the long term is often more important than solving immediate problems. Watching a town transform into a bustling metropolis simply because you connected its people to the wider world is one of the most rewarding aspects of the game.
However, Locomotion shows its age in ways that are difficult to ignore. The isometric graphics, while functional and occasionally charming, were already outdated at launch and feel even more dated today. Environments can appear bland, with repetitive textures and little visual distinction between towns. Animations are limited, and the interface is dense and unintuitive. Constructing complex track junctions or roads on uneven terrain can be a trial-and-error process filled with frustration, as the game provides little feedback when things go wrong. Mistakes are costly to undo, forcing players to demolish and rebuild at significant expense. These hurdles highlight how the game often resists player input rather than enabling smooth creativity.
The difficulty curve adds another layer of challenge. Early scenarios are forgiving, teaching players the basics of connecting resources and transporting goods. But as maps grow larger and rivals enter the picture, inefficiencies compound quickly. Poorly designed routes, unreliable vehicles, or missed opportunities can drain profits and stall progress. While some players thrive on this demanding style, others may find it punishing, especially when scenarios impose strict time limits or objectives. Locomotion rewards patience and methodical planning, but it leaves little room for improvisation or casual play. This design philosophy makes it deeply satisfying for enthusiasts while simultaneously alienating those seeking a more accessible experience.
Despite these flaws, the game’s content breadth keeps it engaging. With dozens of scenarios, multiple terrain types, and a wide range of transport options—trains, buses, trucks, ships, and planes—there are many ways to approach challenges. Each mode of transport has unique advantages and limitations, forcing players to think creatively about how to link distant cities or bridge natural obstacles. Ships may be slow but can bypass mountains entirely, while airplanes connect distant points quickly at a steep cost. This variety helps maintain a sense of experimentation, and the included scenario editor extends replayability by letting players design their own maps and conditions.
The long-term appeal of Locomotion lies in its capacity to immerse players in the slow burn of empire building. While modern transport simulators often emphasize streamlined interfaces and polished graphics, Locomotion demands a different kind of engagement. It requires attention to detail, tolerance for micromanagement, and an appreciation for its somewhat clunky mechanics. For those who accept these demands, it offers immense satisfaction as networks expand, industries flourish, and cities come to life. Watching a carefully designed transport system operate seamlessly across land, sea, and air is the reward for persevering through its frustrations.
In the end, Chris Sawyer’s Locomotion is a game that divides its audience. For players with fond memories of Transport Tycoon or those who delight in logistics and careful planning, it remains a compelling experience. Its flaws are real—dated visuals, cumbersome controls, and a punishing difficulty curve—but its depth and ambition make it a unique entry in the simulation genre. For fans of transport management who value complexity over accessibility, Locomotion still offers a rewarding journey, even if it demands patience and a willingness to wrestle with its imperfections.
Rating: 8/10
A Classic as old as I am! A childhood favorite exactly as i remember it! Create transportation tycoons, build the world, and outperform competitors! If you love old computer games, particularly, by Chris sawyer, this is the game for you!
Isometric transport building goodness with a rich and creamy economic simulation sauce on top. 5/6, with rice.
bom jogo
Epic game i only whis there was a sandbox mode though besides that the game is sweet I love the mods that people made for this game
20 years later, and if you haven't played this game already it's worth grabbing and doing a Google search for the OpenLoco community project.
Also check out the Transport Tycoon forums for an extremely friendly community and modding help.
Probably the best game ever
This game is fantastic. I'm a huge fan of RollerCoaster Tycoon but I could never get into Transport Tycoon because of how different the two games played. This game is essentially Transport Tycoon but it plays extremely similarly to RollerCoaster Tycoon. I've spent 18 hours on this game already and I think I'm going to be spending a lot more on it in the future. For how cheap you can get this game during a sale, I recommend you a least give it a try with OpenLoco, the open source re-implementation of this game.
Absolute gem of a game. Played this as a kid. Always fun
i put hundreds of hours into this game as a kid and i'm so happy to have it back.
I love this game because of MONEY, but I would also like it (if it already exists) a feature to Assassinate or put it another way 'remove' competitors since they annoy me at times but aside from that I love it (the game and the money you can make in-game but mainly the latter) :)
this is a very fun game made by the same guy who made RollerCoaster Tycoon 1&2 and all though it looks like i have put no time in to this game i have been using OpenLoco (in the OpenLauncher the same one as OpenRCT2 on the left) and i have put a lot of time in to it
is this railway just an elaborate excuse to hold hands in the signal box, mang?
stupid pile of atati ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, sawyer must have been drugged out while making this for atari, aint gonna read a 100 page manual just to figure out how stupid trains work! I'm gonna go play some openttd now.
Classic of the tycoon kind of games. It's good, have a lot of things to do, challenges and everything is quite easy to use.
I like trains
Jogo muito toop
like transport tycoon
This game EPIC
I use to play this a lot and it's still fun. I feel it is lacking is a free play sandbox mod, as in one with out a win objective to end your game. In regards to scenarios it'd be nice to have the option to turn the mechanic to renders certain vehicles obsolete after a certain date off, but that's because I wanted to try building a transport system for a Jazz Age retro-futuristic metropolis and that mechanic made doing so impossible (cities take more than two decades to become massive so while I set the scenario to only allow vehicles from the 20s and 30s they all became obsolete as time moved beyond 1939). The game doesn't need these features and is fun as is but I still wanted to share that in case others are considering the game with plans for a project like that or mode of play without a win condition.
One of the strengths of the editor is that you can restrict your competitors to specific transport types- say you want to build only railroads but also want to see buses, airplanes, and shipping simulated on the map- you can forbid your competitors in the scenario from building railroads allowing them to engage in all other forms of transport.
Locomotion should be next Transport Tycoon Deluxe game, but eventually failed, because it could not compete with TTDPatch on release and later on with OpenTTD. Overall Locomotion is a OK game, with better graphics compared to previous title but it runs bad on modern PCs with crashes and bugs. But there is some good news. Community is working on similar project as OpenTTD, but for Locomotion. So now you can experience enhanced Locomotion with modern Win OS support, fixed bugs and much much more! Check below guide how to improve your Locomotion with OpenLoco.

Classic transport simulator that's simple to play.
My family loved this game when we were younger, I'm glad you can get it here
Old but one of the best ones I own.
Brilliant game, one of my all time favourites. However, it does have a tendency to crash suddenly and without warning which will corrupt your save file and force you to restart a scenario. If this wasn't the case, it would be in my top 5 all time games. It doesn't stop it from being an absolute gem of a game though!
This Game Was Awesome
i love this game :)
Very fun game that I come back to every few months and play it obsessively as if it was brand new.
reminds me of childhood
Good
I bought this game on CD rom many years ago. It has been one of my favorites for years.
lovely game. keeps crashing on steam
Buy the game and download openloco which is an ongoing development of this game.
This game was my childhood, along with the wacky mobile port they made and released as "Transport Tycoon". Like the games prior, it really was coded in assembly, which makes it run fast but it's incredibly unstable on even relatively new machines. An open-source remake exists, called OpenLoco, which like OpenTTD runs much better but it's still a WIP so you need to buy this game for it to work.
Still super fun 20 years later. Save often though, it's a bit unstable. there's a bunch of GP30 mods for it so I kinda have to rate it highly anyway.
i wish it was a expanded multiplayer, and making connecting online easier..... but its a ok game
i wish they would have made a part 3 , or ex[ansions like ths sims
Fun, old-school game
it is less advanced than transport tycoon in MHO but better mechanics
I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ love trains and Chris Sawyer
It was supposed to be an improvement over Transport Tycoon Deluxe but it came out way too late for what it brought to be a success, and as of today there is Open TTD out there so the only reason to play this is for nostalgic purposes or personal research to see how it was.
.
Who decided to build roads like in Rollercoaster Tycoon? idiots...
Original TT just a way to go (dosbox)!
One of the best games ever. Played this when it first came out many years ago and just found it again and thought why not try again. Graphics of course a light years back, but the game play has not been created as well ever since. Or please let me know what game comes close.
Só falta funcionar os mods
:
If you are looking for a simple Transport Tycoon clone. This one is even better. A timeless classic to be sure.
Wonderful art style, easy to get into, nostalgic.
There are very few games I considered as niche as this game. It provides an experience almost no modern games can. It comes from the golden era of tycoon games. It has depth far beyond most. More of a grand tycoon game. Beating every mission is unique and some seem almost impossible. It plays a lot like most golden era tycoon games (think zoo tycoon and roller coaster tycoon) with a grid based map and building systems. lots of different vehicles and variety of goods to transport
been playing since i picked it up at a book fair on a disk years back. amazing time killer and overall just fun.
A hidden gem
Complete and utter garbage. The game itself was decent, but this keeps prompting to insert the game into my CD drive E:/?? Huh? It's a scam.
I don't recommend to buy this Steam version of Locomotion, go to GOG and buy it. This version is without patch, so you will find your vehicles choose the wrong way when running through a junction. Also the original patch for the CD version cannot be installed into Steam version.
Nice game though. It would be better if it has a workshop, or able to edit the vanilla vehicles (as the wrong max. speed of E8 locomotive).
have loved this game since its release and even today it runs near perfectly on modern updated pc.
Great gameplay with a variety pf challenges
thjjt
Locomotion is a really fun and intuitive transport and industry game. It's the same exact style as Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 & 2. Everything plays really smoothly on minimum specs. Thankfully, Steam added some minor fixes so this game rarely crashes on newer versions of Windows.
Thank you Chris Sawyer.
Old but fun, nice way to pass the time!
good game
A classic. If you like trains you'll probably like this game. If you like Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 you'll probably be very at-home in this game and other Chris Sawyer titles.
After years of playing OTTD, the quality of life improvements it has makes Locomotion really dated. It's way too hard to upgrade roads, can't clone vehicles, etc.
Fun, but needed better UI, even for 2004.
Works on Steam Deck, just change the resolution and grab a mouse.
Bom jogo para os nostálgicos!
Good
