This game is crafted so well, so well balanced. Risk management is the name of the game and quite honestly it's perfect. Many of the negative reviews are from players who are not ready for a gem like this and have a misconception of how real randomness feels like. Yes you will lose by rat with 2% chance of killing you, but if you play long enough you will also win with a 1% and that makes the game super exciting. No one gambles at poker with out some form of risk management...but yet they don't have a hissy fit and quit playing if they lose a hand.

man... what a shame. this game looks cool and I think there is some genuinely good game play here. But every single thing and tiny step of the game is so unintuitive. The menus are horrible. There are buttons that say "info" everywhere that show you just the same stats in a bit of a bigger font. But where is all the additional info like special attacks, health bars, etc. etc. etc. ? I'm not saying every hexagonal game has to be Heroes of Might an Magic, but this just feels unnecessarily complicated and obtuse. The battles are not necessarily difficult, just annoying.

Красочно, сложно, но совершенно не цепляет. Слишком переусложненная концепция, наверное в этом дело. Элементы, подбор маны, высоты, илллюзии, маунты, "укрытия", количество и порядок действий... как Херстоун, но ещё со взаимным позиционированием и перемещениями с учётом проходимости клеток и высот. И не слишком удобное управление всем этим богатством. Надо внимательно нажимать на кнопочки чтобы случайно ничего не профукать.
Для отдельных хардкорщиков будет норм, но в среднем больше мороки, чем игры.

К тому же, игра выглядит определённо ориентированной на ПвП, но мультиплеер на 2025-й год... не то чтобы очень жив.

The game is fundamentally worth a couple dollars. The multiplayer is dead, and thank god because in order to grind the resources required to do well and have a cohesive build, you need to get a big win-streak, and that's only possible vs the AI. The realm mode is bad, because movement and exploration are penalized. The customization is broken, with custom staves and robes now being impossible to craft, leaving you at the whims of a baffling lootbox system to get what you need, and then having to wade through hundreds of items to actually get that equipped.

But beyond all that, there is a fun game of wizard chess, requiring strategy, thought, knowledge and learning. And that's rare. Truly, chaos is reborn.

Guess I am late to the review here, as I bought this game day one. You see, the original was my most played games ever, I was obsessed with it. This version is (for me) a gaming masterpiece, it retains everything that made the original so addictive, but adds so much more. I still play to this day. It's my desert island game.

The tutorial shows you basically every spell and unit in the game because there really aren't many and once you have picked your starting gear for you cannot restart the campaign and pick different gear which is probably the silliest design feature I have ever seen in a game. I paid £3 for this and it still felt like a waste of money.

I played Chaos, Lords of Chaos, Magic & Mayhem.

I supported the kickstarter.

I didn't realize the gameplay resembled the original game. Pretty disappointed its just a reskin of a very simplistic game. The later games I mentioned above were more entertaining and with better game mechanics.

Wizard Chess!

10 years after release, people are still playing this game. I found it recently and I'm having a blast. Tricky, with some OP moves (looking at you gooey blob and magic bolt), and once one player starts winning it can be hard to catch them. But evenly matched games that go back-and-forth are exciting and fantastically fun, for me. There's even a league! Still active~~

Gleich direkt vorweg: mich hat es nicht gecatcht. Die Grafik liegt so im Mittelfeld, erfüllt ihren Zweck, ist weder hässlich noch besonders schön. Die Soundkulisse gefällt mit geschmeidiger Hintergrundmusik und netten Effekten. Das eigentliche Spiel scheint den Fokus auf Multiplayer zu setzen, es gibt zwar Trainingsmissionen und eine Kampagne, letztere scheint aber eher zum Üben und Warmwerden da zu sein. In der Kampagne erstellen wir zunächst unseren Zauberer, indem wir einen Helden wählen (eher Nahkampf, mehr Verteidigung, Fokus zaubern) und einen Zauberstab, der gibt ein bisschen vor, welche Kreaturen wir herzaubern können (zumindest habe ich es so verstanden). Dann ziehen wir als Icon auf einer Karte los und wenn es zu einer Begegnung mit einem anderen Icon kommt, dann wechselt das Geschehen in eine Runden-Taktik-Ansicht. Hier beschwören wir Kreaturen (wahlweise real oder als Illusion, was vermutlich dann mit Bluffen in der Beschreibung gemeint ist) und wirken Zauber. Das Ziel ist natürlich immer, die Lebenspunkte des anderen Zauberers zu dezimieren. Allerdings kommt mir das Kartendeck sehr zufällig vor, hat man Pech, ist das Spiel schon verloren. Man kann sich zwar dann wiederbeleben und erneut über die Karte zum Gegner huschen, aber den Gegner umgehen oder zuvor, sich "aufleveln" scheint nicht zu funktionieren. Das alles hat mich nicht motiviert, wer allerdings Kartendeck-Runden-Taktik mag, findet eine schöne Beschäftigung, die - so scheint es - gerade im Multiplayer viel zu bieten hat.

Chaos Reborn is a mobile app that's been dumped on Steam as if it was a real PC game (it's not)... it's a cash grab from greedy mobile devs. It's a fantasy themed turn based strategy game/cardgame hybrid (combat revolves very much around RNG and cards rather than planning, strategy and, you know, tactics). And that's where it really all falls down. There's a large audience for quality turn based strategy games on Steam (and strategy games in general, look at Starcraft, Total War, X-Com.. the list goes on).

But designing such a game for mobile phones instead of PC results in a shallow, dumbed down, constrained and limited experience. Mobile phones can't display huge maps, they're not designed around long, involved campaigns... it's ultimately a milquetoast experience that franky is a waste of the effort the developers put into it. It's also, for all intents and purposes, a failure, as the player stats below show.

If you did try to play this mobile app as a PC game, and can look past the dumbed down experience, it's unpleasant because the RNG system clobbers you, and the single player experience is a repetitive grindfest. The game was designed with more of a multiplayer focus, but there's no players, because, well, mobile app. What were they thinking?

From a technical perspective, as a mobile app, this doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard.

The controls can't be customised because the game has such a dumbed down, simplified interface that it's just iPhone screen tapping stuff. The fact that the interface is this dumbed down might be seen as a problem in itself, however... this is a fairly shallow experience if you're the kind of gamer that likes to play games with deep, rich control schemes and interaction. You'll get none of that here.

Because this is a mobile app, it carries a number of deliberate design deficiencies. Compromises were made to cater to the iPhones that the mobile app was designed for. These are unfortunate handicaps and limitations that PC gamers shouldn't be forced to accept, but it's evident that PC was an afterthought for the iPhone developers who are to blame for this. The mobile app is deficient as a result of these choices, and would have been so much better without the handicaps that designing games for mobile phones forces upon a game. Once more, mobile devs have made gaming worse for everyone. I didn't spend thousands on building a gaming rig just so I could pretend it's an iPhone.

These technical defects push this mobile app below acceptable standards for any modern PC game.

You don't have to take my word about how bad the mobile app is, we can measure the interest in a game by how much people bothered to play it. Chaos Reborn has achievements, and they show us a very clear picture that the mobile app absolutely failed to capture any interest from gamers. The most commonly and easily attained achievement is for killing 50 undead enemies, trivial to achieve, but less than 6 percent of players bothered to get that far before uninstalling the mobile app. That's a tiny, tiny proportion of gamers who even bothered with this. Ouch.

Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this mobile app was with players reveals a surprise... there's a modest spike in player counts for the mobile app. But this only happened once, and isn't consistent with the achievement stats, that show less than 6 percent of players bothered playing the mobile app for any reasonable amount of time. How is it possible for this mobile app to have so many concurrent players who didn't bother engaging with this mobile app? Trading cards. People will use card idling software to collect the cards and sell them, but this won't trigger any achievements in-game.

That tells us people only really bought this mobile app for trading cards, and that's a damning indictment of the woeful quality. A closer look at the numbers shows the mobile app just has a couple of players every week running up the mobile app and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many mobile apps like this, with little merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards.

So, should you buy this mobile app? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam?

Chaos Reborn has the completely unrealistic cash grab price of $10 USD, for which you could easily get any number of older AAA games. Given the defects and quality issues with the mobile app, coupled with the unrealistic price, this is impossible to recommend. For comparison, the $10 asking price for this game could get you games like "7 Days to Die", "Hearts of Iron IV" or "Bioshock Infinite". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

This is the first game I've ever played where I've felt endless anxiety and frustration just playing the *tutorial* - it's also the only game I've ever uninstalled before completing it because the level of frustration I had playing it vastly outweighed the enjoyment I got playing it. If all of that doesn't say enough about this game then I don't know that reading the rest of this review is going to have any impact on your opinion of it.

The balance (game balance, that is, not the law / chaos mechanic) in this game seems like a constant struggle between dominating your enemies and getting obliterated yourself - all of which is balancing on a knife's edge and can shift dramatically when a light breeze comes through. Every unit seems killable in just a few hits (including yourself), but the UI itself is a very deceptive indication of how combat will actually play out. In some situations the UI will tell you you'll do *some* damage to a unity, when in reality you can kill it outright - others you'll think you're free to move somewhere without risking being hit only to have an enemy unit confidently walk into range and shoot you in the face.

All of this wouldn't really matter of combat was, in any way, forgivable. Unfortunately, instead, it seems to want to punish you for any mistake whatsoever - even if it wasn't an intended decision on your part. In a game where *any* mistake can be extremely costly (including easily losing the entire combat in a single round), this can leave a very, very bad taste in your mouth. Fortunately for me I realized this pattern enough from the tutorial so I had had enough of it before even completing the first level of the campaign - and hopefully this gives anyone reading this enough foresight to learn from my mistake of sitting down to play this one in the first place.

It's like playing poker with magic. The game throws curveballs with random numbers, so managing risks becomes your game plan. Sure, summoning a grand Sapphire Dragon sounds cool, but sometimes, a trusty Dwarf is the smart move.

Then there's the tactical improv - victory isn't just about having killer spells; it's about using them right. Нагадує суміш HoMM і MTG. Ви керуєте чарівником, який ходить по розбитому світу і б'ється проти інших чарівників. Кожна битва починається з того, що у вас є чарівник і трохи стартових військ (якщо ви їх перед цим найняли). А ще - колода карт із закляттями. Одні прикликають істот, інші створюють споруди, ще інші прямо атакують і т. д. Ви бачите частину карт, які у вас зараз "в руці", а решта випадково випадають з колоди. Колода, зазначу, не дуже велика і закінчується. Бої недовгі, але ландшафт часто перетворює поле бою на лабіринт. Це важливо, адже, наприклад, істота в низині не зможе атакувати істоту на узвишші.

Розвиток полягає більше в тому, щоб певні закляття гарантовано опинялися в вашій колоді. Можна видавати чарівнику мантії та посохи з амулетами, але їхнє призначення зводиться до одного - зробити бої більш передбачуваними. Заклять при цьому небагато і логіка їх вибору неясна. Якщо можна прикликати, скажімо, Сапфірового дракона, то чому він саме сапіфровий, якщо в грі немає інших?

У грі два режими: Порядку і Хаосу. В першому ви б'єтеся звичайно, враховуючи атаку та здоров'я істот, і витрачаючи ману. В другому кожне закляття має шанс успіху. Що сильніше воно, то з вищою ймовірністю не вдасться, зате безкоштовне. Грати так весело, проте будь-яка стратегія розлітається на друзки.

Ще тут є вибір прикликати істот по-справжньому чи як ілюзії. Тоді вам чи вашому супернику доведеться витрачати спеціальне закляття на перевірку.

Ідей багато, і розробники ніби не знали, яку саме гру хочуть зробити. Тому склали все разом і воно раптом запрацювало.

Я сначала не понял в чем смысл игры но прочтя коменты понял что игра создана для мультиплеера и раньше в ней не было режима порядка(режим уберает весь рондом из-за чего походу поломался баланс). Одиночная компания куцая. Новому игроку тут ловить нечего.

I don't know what it is, but I'm not a fan of this game. I want to enjoy it but I suck even at the tutorial and it feels like in Order my opponent has more mana always, and in chaos regardless of the balance they always succeed in casting their summons. Just doesn't feel balanced or fun.

Chaos Reborn is a very accessible strategy game. It will take you just half an hour to learn all of its secrets. Thanks to simple rules, a turn lasts just a few seconds, and the entire session usually ends in 10 minutes or less. But you will be glued to this game for hours.

You can hire mercenaries into slots which appear at the bottom of your screen and open up as the level progresses. It doesn't make it massively clear when that limit increases, so keep checking. Having a numerical advantage is always a good thing, but it's massively important at the start of fights because it helps you zone areas of the map and puts the opponent on a back foot from the off.

Also with mercenaries, they last for as many fights as they survive, while summons don't. So if you've a choice between sacrificing one or the other, always go for the summon. Because mercenaries can and will die it's sometimes worth leaving a good mercenary unhired so you can grab them later for more important fights.

Mounts are the only thing in the game that give your wizard an extra hit point, so they're generally a good idea, however note that you can't collect (or even move onto) mana or treasure chests when mounted. Since mounting/dismounting takes a turn each way, you might want to hold off saddling up if there's easy mana or money around to collect.

Beware Magic Bolts - don't get too close to enemy wizards because they might just one-shot you and win a game you were otherwise well placed in.
Area control like Blobs, Woods and Tangle Vine are great for pacing the game, especially if you need to go defensive but also are surprisingly useful on the offense if you can pin an opponent into a corner.

Quantity beats quality. That's probably just play style, but to me the game seems weighted towards quick wins such that taking time to try and get 'bigger' units on the fields doesn't work.

After playing for *some* time (heh) I feel confident in saying that Chaos Reborn is a highly replayable game.
I recommend choosing the 'chaos mode'. RNG is for the big boys :)

Pros
+ Brilliant battle system, you'll never know how it's going to end!
+ Great tutorial -- and quite challenging from the get go!
+ Playing against bots is also tons of fun
+ Realms are nice. Most people like them more than I do.
+ Discord community is small but cozy

- Map exploration feels tedious and under developed
- Single player campaign is too short

Big disappointment. The game has all the ingredients for a successful tactical combat, but they used it so badly, you feel like you're playing a simple dice game, where AI feels like cheating. your most aggressive unit can't take rats while, their rats take your dragons. it is very frustrating.
TBH I have no idea, what gave them the terrible idea to let every creature, including your "wizard", which you loose the fight if it dies, die in one hit. this kind of poor design, makes weird strategies viable, like sending one flying crappy unit and let it hit the opponent mage once, or cast one ranged spell against the opponent and boom you won. same can happen to you too and there is NO WAY to defend against this, except maybe cornering yourself and spamming summons and hope your summons have enough luck to reach the enemy, before they reach you. you have no control over your deck, it's just random cards. so you may have 0 protection against flying creatures or other 1 shot 1 kill spells.
it's pure luck what your opponent gets, what you get, it's pure luck if you opponents crappy unit kills your giant, it's pure luck your 90% chance spell fizzles twice in a row. it's pure luck if your opponent gets a ranged damage spell and just kills you with it, there is no clever strategies, only chaos.
Another frustrating "feature" is, when you loose a fight, that you were supposed to win with "story" mercenaries, they do not appear anymore, so you just have to retry, against impossible odds and hope chaos favors you in one of the 10 retries.
There is no tutorial, there is no way to tell what is Law mode what is Chaos mode, which you have to choose at the beginning. there is no mention of why you can't use talisman you just bought. the only information you get in the beginning about being chaos/neutral/law turns out to be plain wrong. there is absolutely no difference between those guys. you don't get more chaos spells because you are chaos. you may have a full hand with law spells, although you wanted to be chaos.
The only upside is I bought it at a bargain so I didn't waste a lot of money to be disappointed.

no one left to play and the few that invade while doing a multiplayer mission play slow and will hide in a corner and spam summon 2-3 undeads in a corner to force 15 rounds just to grief you and draw. i lost 1h playing this game and failled to see why i should continue

Linux version of the game does not work out of the box (black screen with no video, only audio). The developers are aware of it since 2017 but never actually bothered to fix it. There are supposedly ways around it to fix it (or just using Proton), but you shouldn't have to do that if the game claims to have Linux support.

The main complaint of reviewers is no longer a problem, namely its core luck mechanic, as the developer added the option to disable it entirely. That said, the game's central concept proved to be a failure for many. I found it tolerable, and the game itself interesting, but was pleased to find the option to disable added. That said, there are too many quality-of-life problems with this game for me to recommend it to anyone other than diehard strategy fans, and among them I would only recommend to those who enjoy novelty for its own sake.

The game features a surprising amount of polish, but it (sometimes) gives off the impression of being glossy turd. The core gameplay is not boring or unenjoyable, and kept my interest for a decent chunk of time, but there are too many things that detract from the experience, and they tend to cancel out. I'm certain much of it was the product of certain budgetary/time restraints of the developer, but with a little more foresight its flaws could have been avoided.

For instance, some locations are selectable from the world map, though most are not, the result being that you sometimes intend to simply view a location by clicking it, and instead frustratingly send your hero there.

The battle interface has a major flaw where the info button sits right beside the dispel button. I can't tell you how many times I accidentally dispelled my unit and lost a battle when I only meant to view info. It's especially problematic because you will be doing it a lot, as information about your enemy is essential. Before uninstalling, I nearly finished the campaign but was in a battle where I attacked a wizard who immediately retaliated and killed me. He had a special retaliation ability which I had never seen before in my 60+ hours of gameplay. I'm left with no desire to go back and finish it, despite how close I was. I hate being punished for bad design decisions.

Tutorial was fun but the akwardness of different creatures that more block you than gives you an edge is a no go for me, so uninstall. Shame as i had hopes to have a lot of fun with this title. This would make a great board game and it's fun solo as well. The "full controller support" is a joke; it's easier to use the controller as a virtual mouse than the proper controller bindings. I think the ideal would be hybrid - a mix of pointer and buttons - such as the Steam Deck or Steam controller.

A turn-based strategy game from the makers of Xcom? I should love this, right?

It is indeed a well-made game and it looks good and plays nicely, but somehow it bounced off me. It just didn't have the intrigue and style of Xcom. I will give it a thumbs-up because it's a quality game but I just couldn't get into it. The troops your wizard conjures are pretty faceless and the game lacks that special formula of unit customization and gear management that made Xcom so relatable to the player. Maybe I needed to play a bit longer, but it didn't seem to have that perfect blend of well executed tactical and strategic play. If you like fantasy though, you might find it a lot more appealing than I did.

Очень недооценённая игра, онлайн очень маленький, если видите в сети 10 человек то для этой игры это запредельно много и вам очень повезло, все в основном играют в режим хаоса где каст заклинаний и существ даже если будет написано что карта кастуется с 90 или 99 процентом вероятности может обернуться провалом, а в режим где карта 100 процентно кастуется только за манну(каст иллюзии не в счёт) противник находиться 1 раз в тысячу попыток с интервалом в много много дней!!! Но сама игра очень интересна и сбалансирована, очень жаль что её нет в мобильных играх, так как она по управлению очень легка и многие бы смогли проводить дуэли пока находятся в пути!

Disclaimer : most negative reviews and overall criticism about this game is towards an older version of the game, which featured a heavy gambit-focused gameplay. I played the other gamemode available, where summonings and attacks can't fail, and I had a blast.
Great gameplay ! I only wish it was designed for solo play more. The campaign tries but falls short of being entertaining. It's an awesome strategy game for only 10 bucks !

Fans of the original Chaos on the ZX Spectrum version will not be disappointed! All of the major and important game mechanics are there, as well as the spells, characters - and much more. In addition to that, the missions add much more depth to the proceedings. Minor quibbles - would love there to be cloud saves to be implemented on Steam, and also Steam Deck compatibility. Overall, really overjoyed that this game from 1985 got this re-imagining - this is a must have for anyone who has tried to escape the deadly gooey blob from the original.

May be this game was fun in 2015 (but i am not sure), but at this moment - it's just old graphics + not intuitive gameplay.
But idea - battle of mages with spells is interesting, but not enough to beat this gameplay.

As for me - better to replay Age of Wonders or some thing else of this type.

初見プレイで30時間ほどでチュートリアルとオフライン全キャンペーンをクリア。
　オンラインにはもう人はほぼ居ない(2021年11月)ので諦めよう。
　1000円の価値はないが、鍵屋で200円程度で買えるので、それなら全然あり。
　要注意：[u][b]全編英語[/b][/u]!!!チュートリアルも各カードの効果･効能の説明も全部英語!!!(でも高校英語で理解可能)

このゲームの試合は簡単に言えば、
[h1][u][b]ターン制ストラテジーにカードと"ブラフ"を混合したゲーム[/b][/u][/h1]
　試合の流れは、毎ターン、各プレイヤーが盤上の自クリーチャーを移動･攻撃させたり、盤上に自クリーチャーを召喚して、相手Wizardを殺せば勝ち、っていう流れ。
　試合は手札制なので、各プレイヤーは手札とマナポイントを使って、クリーチャーを召喚したり、魔法発動したり、トーテムを設置したりする。
　ここまではそんなに特殊でもない、まぁ、ありがちのターン制ストラテジーのカードバトルゲームだ。
　そして、このゲームを最も特徴づけるのが[u][b]幻影(Illusion)召喚を使っての騙し合い･ブラフ合戦[/b][/u]だ：このIllusion召喚を使えば、消費マナを0で(=タダで)クリーチャーを普通に召喚できるし、普通に戦わせることも出来る。しかし、相手プレイヤーはそれに対抗して、Disbelieveというカードをいつでも使うことが出来る。もし、Illusionクリーチャーに相手からDisbelieveを使われたら、瞬時にそのクリーチャーは消滅し、さらに相手プレイヤーはもう一度カード使用権を得る。しかし、実体(Real)クリーチャーに使われても何も起きず、相手プレイヤーのそのターンでのカード使用権はそこで終わる。要は、｢お前のそのクリーチャー、偽物(Illusion)だろ？｣と相手に問うのがDisbelieveだ。
　このシステムによって、[u]相手にバレないようにタダでクリーチャーを召喚しまくって、相手のクリーチャーの嘘(Illusion)を見抜いて、場を有利に運ぶという駆け引き(ブラフ)[/u]が生まれる。これが、このゲームの特徴だ。
　実際のキャンペーンを進めるにつれて、敵はどんどん強力なカードを使ってくるので、とても実体(Real)召喚だけではマナポイントが全然足りなくなって、圧に負けるので、幻影(Illusion)召喚を駆使していかざるを得なくなる。

以上が1つの試合の中身についての説明だ。1試合は大体10分~30分というところか。

　このゲームのキャンペーンでは、ワールドマップみたいな世界(Realm)を探索して、敵クリーチャーの巣を襲撃し、金を集めて装備を買い、仲間クリーチャーを集め、軍団を形成し、Realmの王たるWizardを撃破すれば、キャンペーンクリアだ。その過程で何度も試合をする。
　1キャンペーンはクリアするのに数時間掛かる。

As a huge fan of the fantasy tactics genre I can appreciate the strong points of this game but I don't have the time to tolerate such drastic RNG. Right from the very first battle, its all based on a series of coin flips, not really strategy. The sound and visuals are top tier though.

If you like to crack your head on a solid logic/strategy game, you should definitely give it a go. Putting aside well made overalls (good story, visuals, music) - this is one of the best constructed games I've played in my life. It is very well balanced, you can "turn the tide" and fight to the last moment even being overwhelmed. Perfect mix of using available cards, skills, equipment, risk management, chess-like tactics, terrain advantage etc. Game is not that easy but tutorials are good and explain everything you need to know. Solid 8.5/10.
