Abandonware garbage. You still have to work for the majority of items in free mode and it is nearly impossible to have a good score. Last update was about 2024. Please do not buy this game

It's a fun tycoon game. There are a few things that could be improved and a few bugs that could be ironed out (I've contacted support and reported them). There are some things that need better explanations, like how the awards work as they feel random and how the rankings work as they make very little sense. Also, the shares need fixing as I've lost a LOT of in game money trying to buy shares for it not let me go past 50%. However, it is a fun little game and I am enjoying it.

If you enjoyed The Movies and, like me, cannot play it anymore, this is a fun alternative, which is very similar.
If you're still playing The Movies, you may not need to bother with this unless you just want to try something new.
If you've never played this type of game but enjoy simulators, movies, and challenges, then give this game a try.
The scenes, costumes, and animations are more limited than I'd like, if more people play perhaps the Devs will give us some updates. Still a lot of fun and enough options to keep me interested and enjoying making short films.

I guess back to The Movies game I go. When Blockbuster Inc. released, it was pretty barebones with not many choices. It was a rushed release, sadly. Felt like it should've been an Early Access game considering all the updates they did to it to catch up. I stopped playing to let this game cook and recently came back to see nothing has been done to it for over a year+ and they didn't make enough money to continue development. Sad to see this abandoned and gone now.
Found this game randomly was looking for something new in the simulation space. It's a good game that has a solid foundation that can be built on. The game is fun if you like this style of game. It's got a pretty decent movie making system included within it. You can direct your movies and create your own scenes, stunts, effects. You hire directors, writers. Actors, and additional staff to run your studio I would say it's a good game to pick up if this is the style of game you enjoy. The foundation is solid but will need some additional updates to add more features.

I wanted a modern version of The Movies. What I got was a classic early 2000's shareware game.

Save your money — Blockbuster Inc. is not worth buying in its current state. The game gives the impression it’s been forgotten by its developers, with no meaningful updates or fixes for a long time. Bugs, rough mechanics, and incomplete systems linger unaddressed, and there’s been little to no communication about future support or improvements.
It’s disappointing because the concept has potential, but without active development or a clear roadmap, what you’re paying for feels unfinished and neglected. Features that should’ve been refined months ago are still rough around the edges, and any hope for real progress feels unlikely at this point.
Unless the developers come back with serious updates and engagement, this is a title to avoid. There are better-managed games out there that are worth your time and money.

This has great potential but has been abandonned by the devs. It is not in a completed stage and even at a discount, I cannot recommend it. It simply lacks more content (e.g. more costumes and furniture) and polishment.
But sure it does have a lot of promise and the foundation of the game are impressive. They just didn't finish it. I will keep returning to The Movies.

I KINDA like this game.
I love the idea of running a movie studio and the part where you're actually able to construct your movies is easily my favorite feature of the game.
When it works, it's actually pretty fun.
Problem is, it's FILLED with bugs and despite being out for over a year now, it still feels like an early beta.
* No matter how many tables in the canteen and desks in the teaching room you have, some employees will always have trouble finding an unoccupied one while others can use them.
* Once you start reaching bigger budgets, productions will just halt somewhere over 80% with no reason given.
* The game will keep telling you to replace employees who quit mid-production, despite having just done so and the cast/crew list currently on-screen having been updated.
It seems that the longer you play, the more these bugs appear. I had almost earned my first billion before the bugs (plural) that prevented me from finishing movies and TV shows started appearing, meaning I was WAY past the 14-day refund period when I realized I had bought a non-functional game and it was too late to get a refund.
Apart from these hidden, game-breaking bugs, there are some weird design choices that, together with the multitude of bugs, makes it almost impossible to make decent-looking movies, even while the game is still playable.
Instead of placing actors in different positions for each movie, you only get to choose actor placement when building the SET, meaning that every movie or show you produce that uses the same stage will also have identical actor positions...unless the game starts moving them around randomly.
To make things worse, actor positions are very inexact and sometimes seem to change randomly. When you actually WANT to change them, however, not even demolishing the set and replacing it with a new redesigned one will help...until it suddenly does, like a day later. (Oh, and if you want to use more than 3 actors, the placement of the additional actors are completely random.)
If the developers fixed the many, many, MANY bugs, I'd warmly recommend this game but as of now, you'll be paying full price for a game that is only finished in the sense that the content is technically there, while the mechanics seem to still be in a beta, or even alpha stage.
If you're prepared to be frustrated over and again and shell out money for a half-finished game while the developers spend another year considering fixing game-breaking bugs that the demo DIDN'T have, knock yourself out.
Should they ever fix the bugs, I'd gladly rewrite this review
but it seems the developers ended support in March 2025
(but are still selling the game without this disclaimer?).

Ubogie animacje - jak w "The Movies" uwielbiałam oglądać jak nagrywają filmy, tak tu lecę na przyśpieszeniu bo inaczej nie ma sensu.
Tłumaczenie polskie jest połowiczne i zdarzają się błędy.

I was hoping this was going to be almost as good as The Movies from more years ago than I can think of. It's not nearly as good! There are some similarities, but this one is not nearly as good. One of the biggest annoyances I have is that when direction the movies, you used to be able to match up each main character in The Movies so you didn't have strange jumps. In this one you can't and it's just not as fun.
If you are looking for something similar to The Movies, this is but it's not nearly as good!

El juego promete una experiencia profunda de gestión estilo Hollywood, pero en realidad es muy limitado, con sistemas simples y bastante aburrido. Por el precio que tiene (24,5€), la calidad no se acerca a lo esperado. Los tráilers venden algo mucho más grande de lo que el juego realmente ofrece. No lo recomiendo: hay juegos más baratos que están mucho mejor acabados.
The game itself is okay, not the greatest but not horrendous. It tries to capture the charm of The Movies but overall it missed the mark. There are tons of features that are missing and not fully polish. As you seen several reviews and from the notes/discussions, this game has been abandoned by the devs and is no longer getting updates.

It's clear that BLOCKBUSTER INC. is a fun and engaging game with great potential, and could be a successor to THE MOVIES. However, the many options, such as room construction, limited decorations, planning, genre selection, and theme selection for films or TV series, and the lack of customization, are too limited at the beginning of the game. Scene creation is also too limited, as at the beginning there are few animations for actors and individual film genres, and only one actor. A good idea would be to add more movie costumes – a ghost, a treasure hunter, something like Indiana Jones and Lara Croft), animations for actors on movie sets – entering rooms, opening and closing doors in rooms, turning to a character who entered a room, greeting, arguing, sneaking with a prop – a flashlight, a weapon, or without a prop, chasing someone, climbing a ladder or a wall… More movie sets would also be welcome – driving a car, flying and landing a helicopter, a dark alley, a city corridor… Such things were in THE MOVIES.
Post-production also looks rather sparse. You have to wait too long to unlock new features, as everything depends on the year you start the game. THE MOVIES looked better here.
It's good that the game has Polish, but not all subtitles are displayed in Polish. It would be nice if the radio announcer also spoke Polish.
A FREE MODE would also be useful, where the player could do whatever they wanted without time constraints or having to worry about cash. Where all options for creating a studio and films would be available without any restrictions.
I don't understand why, in a game starting in the year 2000, for example, you have to unlock everything from previous years through research, instead of having everything already unlocked. The excessive in-game economy is also a bit overwhelming. A little more freedom would be nice.
I hope the developers will make improvements to BLOCKBUSTER INC.

Abandoned game, plays nothing like the original "The Movies", so if that's why you're here you're going to be disappointed. Not even a case of "Wide as an ocean, deep as a puddle", this is just a puddle. With an unnaturally large dookie floating in it that you'd swear came from a gorilla, even though you know for a fact that there are no gorillas, even captive ones, in your part of the world, making the dookie that much more unsettling.
could've been a good game but the devs made big promises and then abandoned it, leaving it with far less features or content than "The Movies" while also not delivering any of the desperately needed quality-of-life updates that the nearly 20 year old game that inspired this one needed.

very fun! you can make some funny stuff in this game, but it's a bit pricey. i suggest you get this when its on discount.
I'll be generous and give this game a 7/10 for effort and a cool concept. It could use a little polish and maybe some more options for production in addition to the main sliders for the potential of having a higher (or lower) scoring film. I would have added the ability to fully buyout or merge with competitors, as well as more competitors that crop up as the game progresses, IP trade and the ability to "shoot on location" which could be treated as a offscreen event where your selected crew aren't in the studio.

A decent game. I wish the programming was smart enough to figure out when a character can go to film a scene and when they aren't working on that they could go to class. Currently production is held up until you figure out the character is learning.
Juego abandonado por sus creadores. No está equilibrado y falta muchísimo contenido. Si lo pillas en oferta un rato agradable pasas, pero no sale rentable pillarlo al precio completo. Una pena por que parecía ese sucesor espiritual de The Movies que todos esperábamos pero vuelve a fallar en lo más tonto: no estar completo.

Bastante interesante la idea de crear tu propio estudio de cine, buenas opciones para crear personajes y da cierta libertad en producir los sets para hacer las películas, los textos no están al 100% traducidos y le falta algunos añadidos más para la decoración.
También tenemos que decir que no tenemos opciones para hacer secuelas y los puntos de investigación, llegado el momento, piden muchísimos puntos.
Le vendría bien tener la opción de mejorar todos los objetos(cada década se cambian, pero tenemos que hacerlo manualmente, edificio por edificio).
Alright so I've been playing this for about 8 hours, which I suppose qualifies me to review this game.
If there's one thing that this game absolutely nails, it's its game-you-played-as-a-child-at-your-grandparents type game, laying eyes on this game it felt oddly nostalgic, like it was calling out to my younger self. As with many games, I decided to toss it in my wishlist and never think about it again, until it came on sale, where I found out that this game is the production of like 3 dudes. This made me feel guilty about buying the game on sale, feels like in cases like these a supporter pack would be very much welcome.
I think it's a good game, let's start out with that. Like I said it perfectly captures the vibe of 'game you used to play at your relatives' both in terms of gameplay and artstyle. The visuals seem to me like a blend between the Sims 4 and the Two Point games, with the menu's leaning more towards Sims 4, not that I consider that a bad thing. I do find it surprising how this game on the highest graphics at 1440 manages to reach 100% utilization, it's a 5070. But I'm not gonna consider this a bad thing when all I have to do is just lower the graphics and/or cap the framerate. I'm pretty sure that if it were to do some crypto mining on customer GPU's it wouldn't be sold on Steam anymore, so there's no worries about that.
The gameplay itself is solid, when I started up the game I was asked to do a brief tutorial, which I'll say was kinda useless, it only really went through controls, and when I started my game I had no idea what to do. There's a handful of tutorials available in the menu, but I feel like these should've been more integrated into the main tutorial. Because of this I had no idea that I had to assign work hours, and all the needs that your employees carry. Worry not however, because there's only a few. Where the graphics reminded me of the Sims 4, the gameplay reminded me more of Game Dev Tycoon, I feel like there's a handful of similarities this game carries, and the biggest flaw the games share is the fact that upon completing a project, your employees don't improve, the only way to do so is training. Despite my employees being low ranked, I did find myself breaking the game rather quickly, but I don't think that's a bad thing. I feel like the simulation genre nowadays has way too little casual games. I was playing on normal difficulty, and before I knew it I was swimming in money, money I then used to recruit about 30 researchers. Admittedly I do find it kinda nonsensical that stuff like equipment is locked behind what year you're in. Something else I disliked has to do with employees being able to retire, not because of the concept, but because if they are part of a project and they retire during this project they just leave unceremoniously, I kinda wish they would stick behind until the project is done. Plus there's this bug where if you press the button to replace them for the ongoing project, the button to quickly remove them doesn't appear. I also think it's very good that the game automatically approves raises, but I really wish the game wouldn't constantly notify me of that, at a certain point you get it. You can train your employees all the way to the max level, which is good, but as someone who prefers to get everyone on max level it was getting kinda hard to tell when an important employee reaches max level, as there's no notification for that. And to finish my 'complaints' off, and this might've been because I was playing the game for 8 hours straight, the talky radio bits are getting old fast, and the OST kinda does. Maybe the Steam Workshop can help with that? I'm not a Steam Workshop person though.
So to summarize, it's a good game, but I wish the following changes to be implemented
-Make the tutorial more in-depth
-Add an option where employees earn experience upon projects
-Maybe add a cap to how many employees of a certain type you can recruit
-Possibly allow your studio to manufacture its own equipment so you don't have to wait for the next era
-Have employees finish their project before they retire
-Stop notifying me of employee raises
-Add notifications whenever employees reach max level
I also had a handful of crashes, which I've reported when I was being prompted. Didn't feel like making a fuzz about those.

AMAZING
Blockbuster had so much potential, but the developers gave up on the game... I was really excited for them to add new features because, while the game seemed fun at first, it was very bare-boned. Don't bother paying for this.
IT IS VERY FUN
This game has some good elements, but ultimately too many things are broken mid to late game to make it worth it.
First lets start with the basic UI issues. By default edge scrolling is turned on, but it scrolls when you reach the edge of the build menu, so everytime you attempt to build something the screen scrolls. The scroll wheel sensitivity is so low that you spend a ton of time scrolling and scrolling and scrolling just to navigate basic menus.
There isn't an obvious way to delete a set. I ended up having to look it up, and you have to take the bludgeon tool and click on the wall of a set when it's not in use, but that only worked sometimes, and sometimes I had to pop in and out of the build menu to get it to work. There should be a button to delete sets under the "move to a new location button".
Sometimes when you're updating the cameras and lights on your sets the game will simply refuse to let you click on anything else until you back out of build mode and come back in which is annoying.
Move the movie title dialogue to the end after you've agreed to make the picture, with it at the beginning more than once I started the production only to realize that I'd forgotten and couldn't go back and change it. You should be able to go back and change the name, actors, scenes, etc right up until you hit the release button.
The soundtrack is limited and gets incredibly repetitive. I ended up turning it off and playing my own music instead. It would be nice to have era appropriate movie like music.
The actual building textures and options are disappointing. I expect more from a tycoon building sim. For example we have no carpet, limited wallpaper. The clipping on windows prevents you from putting them on a corner. We don't have stairs, second stories, floor to ceiling windows... Nor does actually designing a good studio seem to make any difference. Things like studio prestige don't seem to do much. I took several hours and attempted to build as nicely decorated a studio as I could and I was disappointed to see that many of the set piece which I knew were modeled and in the game were not available for placing in the studio, while what was available was painful to use, like the fencing.
This game fails so miserably as a satisfying tycoon game. One of the best things about tycoon games is setting all the schedules, getting the automation running like a swiss watch... but since every employee regardless of specialty is on this arbitrary work leisure schedule it becomes impossible. Half of my staff does nothing, while I channel a ton of resources into research points to get genres locked behind the research tree for really no reason. When I saw that I had 24 hour programming I assumed that we could stagger schedules to film or work around the clock, but no such luck. Everything needs to be able to be automated when it gets boring, and run smoothly so you can focus on micro-managing what's new.
The creating of new films becomes incredibly tedious. The genre slider mechanic is annoying and once you get it once you basically never have to do it again. Which is encouraging the players to simply look it up and bypass it. I would argue that is not very good game design.
Really there is so much more that could be done here, but it really plays like a rough draft after an hour or so, and never gets much better. There's not satisfying pay-off of hitting a milestone, of achieveing a movie masterpiece, of sitting back and watching the ant farm run itself. It's just repetitive.
Ultimately at the end of the day I just don't want to keep playing it. I don't really care about unlocking the rest of the research tree or the genres or the cameras, because I've already seen the rinse and repeat game cycle and there's nothing left to explore, manage, or navigate. I was making so much money that I could attempt to make a flop with the worst cast imaginable and it had absolutely no effect on my studio at all. If anything I should have just left it AFK on max speed to get a billion research points, wipe the studio, unlock all the modern processes, and then start playing the game, because everything up to that point feels forced and tedious.

Studio is shut down. In its current form I don't find there to be a lot of content nor is it enjoyable. I would expect this more from something that is early access at which point my review would be less critical and reflect that. However with the lack of any hope for more content due to studio closing and the lackluster content it currently has I can't recommend buying this. I played for a few minutes and will probably refund.

This game never updates and Boring after 5 hours have already done everything in 4 hours and there isn't enough animations and characters!

Blockbuster Inc definitely has (or maybe had as the devs seem to have abandoned it) potential. However doing the same stuff again and again and again with no variety can get pretty tedious and boring after a while. The whole designing your own scenes mechanic is really fun but as I said, gets boring as there are not enough costumes, animations, sound effects and overall things you can alter to make each movie unique. Your first 4-5 hours can be really fun, especially if you make the game a little challenging by switching to hard mode and/or being able to lose by being bankrupt. Is it a game where you can have some fun or relax after a long day? Probably. Is it worth its money? Not yet....and probably not ever because all the "updates" so far have been pretty lackluster and I don't know if the devs will continue to add new stuff to the game.
I give it a 6/10 with the proper updates the game can definitely go to an 8.5 or 9, the basis is there but it's just...barebones.

The studio has shut down and game is dead, shame it could have been good if left in early access for year or two but right now don't buy it as it is incomplete and not supported.

Если вы любите выполнять однотипные действия на протяжении долгого времени, вести менеджмент посреди миллиона отдельных окон, вести весьма сомнительную конкуренцию с ботами (даже будучи №1 моя, призы получала другая студия) и вас не страшит множества недоработок - можете купить игру. Завидую, если получите удовольствие.

Задумка хорошая. Исполнение - отстой ! Особенно по части передвижения НПС. НПС толпятся напротив входа в столовую , столовая пустая, повара в столовой 2шт. работают , столиков и стульев в два раза больше чем НПС на студии, а НПС жалуются "не могу пройти в столовую. Идиотизм.

As it is, [b]Blockbuster Inc.[/b] is an entertaining but [i]super[/i] fiddly management sim that invites you to build a Hollywood studio, design sets, hire and train employees, and painstakingly storyboard movies for 90 years. While it had the potential to become a real successor to [i]The Movies[/i], the devs announced on Discord in April 2025 that the game is too unprofitable to continue updating.
[h3]What Worked For Me[/h3]
✅ Build mode was shamelessly ripped from [i]The Sims[/i], right down to CTRL+F placing quarter-floor tiles.
✅ Create your employees, actors, screenwriters, etc., or hire randomly generated NPCs from the market. There's no genuine life sim elements, but it's fun to flood your studio with terrible people.
✅ With a [i]lot[/i] of patience and time, you can create awesome short films. From set design to storyboarding character actions and camera movements, you have a ton of creative power.
✅ Steam Workshop allows players to share cool set designs.
[h3] What Didn't Work For Me[/h3]
❎ It needs [i]so much more[/i] décor. You have so little to work with that even furnishing your single-story roof-less studio feels unsatisfying. Similarly, the character creator would benefit from more than one outfit per decade and more customization options; everyone looks the same.
❎ Storyboarding is [i]so[/i] fiddly. At least 1/3 of my playtime was just working and reworking sets in an effort to create a remotely comprehensible movie. (Which always tank at the box office.)
❎ Management systems are generally shallow. Like everything else in this game, the potential is there but hasn't been realized.
❎ Holy historical inconsistency, Batman! On the one hand, you can only furnish your studio with era-appropriate(ish) items; on the other, you can film [i]Deadpool & Wolverine[/i] in 1920.
[h3] Final Thoughts + Recommendation[/h3]
In its current form, [b]Blockbuster Inc[/b] is okay but grossly overpriced; I personally think it's fine for ~$15 USD or less, but not standard sale price. If you hyper-focus on little details and get swept up in micromanaging simulation games, you'll enjoy a few hours of fun. There are other [i]Movies[/i]-inspired games on the market but each one is lacking in some significant way, so it's really up to you how much you want to spend and deal with.
I really thought this was going to be the one. I should have posted a negative review in July 2024 when I purchased the "full release" at full price and was disappointed by the lack of content; but it had good bones, plenty of potential, and regular (if minimal) content updates, so I was willing to treat it like an Early Access title. Joke's on me… and, I suspect, on the devs who signed on with an untested publisher.

Abandoned game.
I've been playing an abandonware version of The Movies for a long time, and you're better off playing that. The developer of Blockbuster Inc. was definitely inspired by that game, and much of the bones of Blockbuster Inc. are similar to the movies, but that's all that is here. Bones.
Bought the game upon release and felt like there was enough in the first hour to not refund, and wait for bug patches, updates, and more content. There were some bug patches, but this in the current state the game is closer to a proof-of-concept in early access rather than a fully fleshed out The Movies competitor.
The developer has posted in the Discord server three times since the Christmas update, and has been non-responsive regarding future updates and previously promised content. There is currently a *tiny* movement within the community to petition the publisher/developer to at least increase the current modding capabilities so that the game can survive, but I'm not holding my breath.
There are other, better, titles in this genre out there. Including abandonware.
I'll summarise it up as a passable experience. Not much depth to it. It really could've been a good successor to The Movies (Lionhead Studios) but fell short. If you must get this game, you'll have achieved everything worth doing in an hour or two.
The devs have abandoned this now due to lack of sales so this is as good as it's going to get. The Movies by Lionhead Studios is still by far the best experience for this kind of game. Sadly due to DRM issues and no other releases of The Movies you'll have to go sailing for it.
Do not buy!
The game is not being developed any further and is not good in its current state.
There was potential, so it's just a pile of junk software.

This is more of a warning than a review and to be honest there isn't much to review anyway which is the problem. There's a foundation here for a game here but it's no where near finished, every aspect of this game from the studio building to making movies lacks depth and content, it needs a ton of QoL and it has bugs. It's like very early access no where near 1.0, more like 0.4 and there hasn't been any updates for months and according to the Discord the makers have all gone off to get other jobs so it's basically abandoned without any official statement on Steam. After about 4 hours I've seen everything the game has to offer which is unfortunately over the Steam refund time, in the words of everyone's favourite movie squid man: "It's a trap!" If you're looking for a replacement to Lionhead's classic The Movies keep looking, this ain't it folks.
If you're one of the suckers that bought this game the only hope we have is the publishers open the source code so modders can finish what they started, I doubt they will do that but it would breathe new life into the game. Eigentlich ein gutes Spiel, eigentlich. Leider fühlt es sich ein wenig leer und seelenlos an und die Hoffnung auf weitere Updates und Verbesserung verlief im Sande.
Es unterhält zwar eine Weile, aber dann wird es schal und öd.
Das Spiel fühlt sich an wie ein halbwegs solides Grundgerüst, oder ein Haus, das zwar Fenster, Türen und Treppen hat, aber leider keine Inneneinrichtung.
Die Entwickler kümmern sich nicht mehr um dieses Spiel und so bleibt es ein halbfertiges Gerüst, das man kaum als Spiel bezeichnen kann. Ist das schon Scam?
