Definitely a great reason to use a mouse or motion controls. I've loved this game since I first played it on the Wii.

Unobtainable/glitched achievements: Yes. For me the "progress" achievement didn't unlock twice. The game's otherwise dead so no wonder users aren't saying anything.
First achievement unlock: Combo 100 beats or miss a note with a wide paddle.

It dawns on me that playing the "good" games first leaves the backlog full of the long-dead bloated corpses of games like this one and the recent ones I've been playing. I'm fully aware these games were created solely to fill up bundles and create a false sense of value in the eyes of the player.

Notes:

* There are 3 "levels". Each level is broken up into 7+boss. But if you miss A SINGLE sneaky note hidden in the mountain of lights and sounds... GOOD LUCK... hope you have 30 more minutes to start again.
* There are better products if you like rythm games... Look up "OSU"
* You could spend 20$ to buy this game and the Bit.Trip runner series... or buy Hollow knight:Silksong. Enough said.

All the BIT.TRIP games are good, but Beat didn't capture me for a long period of time. The music and visuals are great as always, and the loop is satisfying, but the overall arcade progression is a hard sell for me. If arcade score chasing isn't a turn off for you, then BIT.TRIP BEAT is a worthwhile game to check out!

I thought this was going to be easier than it ended up being. Classic Gaijin Games, this game really does punish failure. But I have to commend that changing from Normal to Easy doesn't change anything in the gameplay; it just buffs player HP (well, the equivalent of that) to make the same sections more easy to survive.

Of course, this is going to be for a certain type of player; vast swathes will hate the core concept of an arcade Pong-like experience. But they're not reading this review anyway. The remainder, I think, should enjoy this game if they can get it at the right price.

Me encantan los Bit. Trip Runner, me jugué las 3 entregas y los disfruté un montón y quise conocer las otras sagas comenzando con BEAT y de paso disfrutar de su excelente música en el proceso.

Lo jugué un par de veces en modo normal y en ambos intentos barrieron el piso conmigo a mitad del segundo nivel. Lo volví a intentar un par de veces más en dificultad fácil y solo pude llegar hasta el tercer boss.

La dificultad que tiene este juego es muy elevada para mí por lo que decidí dejarlo inconcluso, algunas personas dijeron que es más fácil jugarlo con control lo cual consideré pero mis resultados fueron peores que con ratón.

En cuanto a la música yo esperaba bangers y bangers fue lo que obtuve, pero esto es un juego y por lo tanto la jugabilidad va primero y por esa razón no puedo recomendarlo.

This game has one of the worst difficulty curves I've ever seen. The first set of levels is really fun. If the game kept up that level of fair challenge, it would be pretty good.
But then the following sets of levels are all impossible difficult. That is, if you play on "normal" mode. If you play one easy mode, then they're almost insultingly easy. Except for the bosses. The second and 3rd bosses are both very poorly designed.
This game made me hate pong.

Still though, as someone who's beat this game twice on Steam and the 3DS, I can't say I'd recommend it if you aren't into rhythm games.
If you are into that, though, play the game. Buy it while it's on sale. You'll only regret it a little.

A pesar de que es un juego muy corto, y con unicamente 3 niveles, la dificultad del juego lo compensa. Felt like picking this back up again after a few years and... nope, still can't beat Descent or Growth on normal. The visuals tend to make it hard to actually play by obscuring and/or distracting from the beats, which quickly goes from "difficult" to "nightmarish" when you start getting beats that bounce around in weird ways or blink in and out of existence.

It's also *very* short (only four levels, each 10-15 minutes long not counting Growth's potentially very lengthy boss), so if you do get it, you'll probably want to get it on sale.

Honestly I'd skip it and just listen to the soundtrack, which is wonderful.

BIT.TRIP BEAT is a pretty neat li'l game. I remember trying to play it back on my old PC in 2012 and it ran like crap, but then that computer was monumentally old; it works pretty much flawlessly on more contemporary computers. Whilst I enjoyed my time with it, I [i]do[/i] have some li'l nitpicks:

[*]it's a little short for the asking price, with two difficulty modes (Easy and Normal), 3 proper stages and a bonus Portal stage (though trying to memorise some patterns to get through without trouble might beef up the playtime)
[*]the final boss is pretty rough unless you've got a good grip on your paddle; this is not aided by the heavy thumping music that plays during said encounter, and retrying takes a good ten minutes of replaying the stage
[*]the game in general is also pretty flashy; it might not be for you if you've got troubles with epilepsy

Overall though, it [i]is[/i] a decent little time-killer and can easily help you spend a few hours of your day, trying to bat back a tide of squares with some funky tunes and nifty backgrounds (if you can look away from the screen to check out said backgrounds), and a few achievements are available for the truly manic individuals that'd try and full-combo all the stages. But I'd say, unless you've got a frankly [i]dire[/i] hankering for rhythm-focused Pong, wait for a sale. It's good, but not £7 good.

BIT.TRIP BEAT is the first of the BIT.TRIP games, part of a 6-game saga following Commander Video in his journey through life. BEAT is a pong-styled game where you hit or miss little pixels called beats. Hitting them boosts a meter at the top of the screen. Missing them boosts a meter below. MEGA on the top gives more energy to the music and boosts the score multiplier, while NETHER at the bottom mutes the music and makes the screen go from a colourful mix to an emotionless and eerie black and white colour combination. There are different types of beats. Yellow beats are standard, just flying towards you in different directions. Orange beats deflect off of your paddle and come back for more tries. Lime green beats flicker and are harder to see. The more you progress, the more beats you encounter, and at a steady pace too. There are 3 main levels, all 10-15 minutes each. While this is a short game, it's definitely a fun one.

It may look easy, but it's a challenging game and definitely tough to master.

This game is abstract art direction gone wrong.

Space Channel 5 has spoiled me to enjoy my rhythm game with silly action and story and fun asthetic. But I decided to give this abstract game a chance. After seeing Commander Video character when replaying parts of Super Meat Boy and going "oh yea I have it in backlog since 2014". Don't buy games you won't play, gamers!

Yea, well, there is no fun story, not even trying in abstract way. Or fun graphic action. So it should focus on trying to get you into this trance state like such similar games do, right? Nope, because it does it badly. Uneven difficulty: 3 levels you can select from main menu and it's all endurance. It took away all cool non-abstractness... only to have graphics and abstract background to obscure the vision and distract. And music? I don't dig it, just rather low-level 8-bit style that is outdated by now, ho ho. No trance achieved.

Oh yea, it's like Pong, use mouse to move paddle on the left side of a screen in order to hit dots in time. Gimmicks, twists, so on.

The first game in the series is a flop.

EDIT: However, having played few later Bit.Trip games, I must say that Pong variant was still satisfying to me in control and gameplay scheme. Just wish it had more but shorter levels, ugh.

BIT.TRIP BEAT is a game that will only appeal to a certain kind of person; one who likes a challenge, is accepting of unorthodox game design (i.e. intentionally making the screen difficult to see / misdirecting the player), doesn't mind playing a small amount of content focussed on the gameplay and likes the music (because it's essentially a rhythm game, you'll be hearing the game's music the whole time). I don't think it's fair to criticise a game for being hard or 'not for everyone' because the exact same logic can be applied to every single game, some people don't want to play a game that feels babyproofed. A lot of people don't like this game, I personally love it.

Where I think this game shines, what makes it an exceptional game even, is it's ability to get a player into a flow state. You're supposed to be focussed on the paddle the whole time, ignoring distractions in the background and knowing where the beats will come from in advance. When you hit nether mode (doing poorly) all visuals are simplified and music turns off, forcing you to focus on not failing. When you have a high combo / multiplier (doing well) the pressure to keep it builds, forcing you to focus on not missing once. At first, it will probably be frustrating missing beats you couldn't have known how to block in advance. After practicing, it's pure satisfaction having control of the paddle / levels trying to inch closer to perfection. The real challenge lies in perfecting the levels, which holds the maximum kind of satisfaction; there is an absolute perfect score to attain (hitting every single beat), once you've perfected a level you've BEATen it absolutely.

The biggest flaw with this game and why I personally believe a lot of people struggle with it is the sensitivity. The in-game sensitivity settings are ABSURDLY high by default and lowering them to minimum is still way too high to have any kind of precision. You'll have to edit the sensitivity in the config to actually have any semblance of control, how on earth the default settings are so messed up is beyond me.

It's a moot point by now to say 'it's not for everybody', perhaps not for the majority, but for some it may just be a hidden gem worth giving a shot.

This game is truly addicting, and it can be hard to put down at times. Being a WiiWare game originally, I can feel the “just one more level” design philosophy DNA at work. The soundtrack is especially excellent and contributes The game runs perfectly smoothly, and I have absolutely zero performance issues to report.

Quite an enjoyable game. While I didn't have much fun with the other Bit.Trip games, this one keeps things simple enough and has enjoyable enough music that I was able to beat it a couple of times and enjoy it all the way through.

The basic game play loop is basically like an advanced version of Pong. You move your paddle up and down with your mouse to block projectiles that come from the right side of the screen, and this is done with matching music and enjoyable rhythms. There are a handful of stages and stage "bosses" you have to defeat, and you lose a level if you let too much past you.

I've owned a few version of bit.trip beat (right back to the original wii release) and I have to say that it is one of the best rhythm games on the market. It is deceptive in that is looks simple, but it throws a lot novel & mind bending challenges at you even if it is a memorization heavy game. The presentation of the game is fantastic both in the soundtrack, but also in the visuals. The 3 boss fights are varied and interesting.

Now for the shortcomings of the game. If you don't like repetition and dying to learn new beat types you will probably not enjoy this game. There are not a lot of "levels" but they are pretty long.

All that said, it's the sort of game that you will play over again just to get in that groove.

BIT.TRIP BEAT is a game where you move a paddle vertically on the left side of the screen. Dots will come from the right side of the screen and you need to make sure none of them get past you. That's it. That's the whole game.

Deceptively though, BTB is incredible. The dots come in to the beat of the music, and make their own beats when you hit them back. The visuals are retro and chunky, but beautiful. When you are in the flow, everything combines into something sublime. If you like to smoke weed, THIS is the game to smoke before.

BTB is DIFFICULT. Especially if you are trying to do well and not just get through the levels. If you do not like challenging games, you may want to avoid this masterpiece.

This game is right up my alley. I DO smoke weed, and I love an old school arcade challenge. When you get a huge combo, and get in "the zone" there are few arcade style games that can match it.

Mélange entre un casse brique, Pong et un jeu de rythme, Bit.Trip Beat est un jeu indépendant sorti il y a maintenant plus de dix ans et proposant de parcourir plusieurs niveaux dont l'objectif sera toujours le même : intercepter les pixels sur le bord de l'écran, et ce, en rythme avec la musique.

Les + :
- Un concept intéressant
- Une bonne bande son

Les - :
- Vraiment très difficile
- Plus un die & retry qu'un réel jeu de rythme
- Seulement quelques niveaux
- Répétitif

En somme, Bit.Trip Beat est une expérience intéressante de prime abord, mais qui ne s'adressera qu'aux joueurs les plus hardcore, le gameplay étant intéressant mais demandant une précision de tous les instants.

Mélange d'Arkanoid et de jeu de rythme dans lequel on doit renvoyer avec une raquette les blocs qui arrivent depuis le bord opposé de l'écran selon des motifs guidés par la musique. Bit.Trip Beat est un faux jeu de rythme car il est nécessaire d'apprendre les motifs par cœur dès que la difficulté augmente, la trajectoire des blocs devenant difficile - sinon impossible - à anticiper. Et même comme ça la précision requise lors des déplacements et du positionnement de la raquette me semble exagérée. Par ailleurs le contenu est trop limité avec seulement trois niveaux et le jeu se révèle de fait vite répétitif. Un titre décevant.

The game is basically the hardest game of pong you'll ever play. You're a paddle that needs to hit back the balls that come at you. The gimmick is that the hits are timed to a song so you get into a flow of hitting back balls. The levels also get more difficult as you go along and eventually start throwing gimmicks at you so you have to adapt to each level of difficulty. That final boss can go ♥♥♥♥ itself but the rest of it was definitely doable after playing through it once or twice. Your score multiples as you hit more of the balls back in a row and doing well enough will elevate the visuals and the music to a higher "plane"? Where the visuals pop more and the song has extra layers. While that sounds great in theory, the visuals involve bright flashes and more background elements which make it harder to see what you're hitting. I guess it's a difficulty thing but it definitely hurt my eyes a bit.

It was fine? The music was decent and it provided a challenge. The bring visuals are annoying so watch out if you have any sensitivity to that. Other than that, it was decent.

At this point any recommendations I give for this franchise aren't really recommendations as much as me saying, "I didn't have fun, but I can see how someone might enjoy it". Because as a whole this franchise taught me, more than anything, to stop buying games just because they're on sale during Steam sales.

BIT.TRIP BEAT falls in line with a franchise that consists of six games that follow some manner of rhythm-based game mechanics with basic game elements that can last you 30 minutes to an hour per game. My problem with the franchise has always been that you need to be an autist savant to really perfect the scores, and even on normal the difficulty is absurdly high. You can't get as good as the game wants you to get at it when it lasts 30 minutes. Imagine being given the keys to a jet and expected to do intense maneuvers from the get-go.

It's really bad game design. But it's alleviated (somewhat) with the easy difficulties, which allow you to bring yourself back from the brink of death by hitting a few objectives. It actually makes the game too easy, and doesn't get you any better at it as much as allow you to fail more frequently. These games just don't have enough levels to ease you into ramping difficulty, and the easy mode doesn't bother to do anything more than let you play with God mode on.

Either way, BEAT's formula is that of Pong. Like Pong, you shoot back spheres that are coming at you. You have enough leeway to see where the projectiles are coming from and to react accordingly, but the backgrounds and effects can seriously get in the way of the game. These incoming dots are so easily obfuscated by the lightshow occurring in the background, which is another case in bad game design. But other than that, I find that the game plays well in all other respects. The BIT.TRIP games have issues with designing difficulty appropriately, but I find that BEAT is one of the better ones at this than the other games.

Honestly I just wanted to finish the damn thing, but I can appreciate what they were doing here and can recognize that it isn't objectively bad (as objective as opinions can get, at least). Would I recommend anyone play it? Not really. But I also won't give it a thumbs down if I find that there's some merit to the game. Even if it wasn't personally my liked serving.
