This was my first MMORPG, back in 2001. While I have spent various stretches of time not playing the game over the last 24 years, it is still my favorite and the game to which I return when I get bored of the others. AO is not for stupid people who need their hands held every step of the way. It's for people who enjoy figuring out how the game works and then figuring out how to get around those mechanics. This is not a game where bosses can generally be defeated alone; most of the content is geared for groups. This is not a flaw (MMORPG) and more games could benefit from this stance. Oh, and it runs flawlessly on Linux.

This game's age is definitely showing, with dated graphics, archaic design choices, confusing tutorial, in-your face cash shop even before the tutorial, and just a rough overall onboarding experience. It made an impact in the MMO landscape for it's innovations and uniqueness when it came out, but it's really hard for a new player to enjoy today.

Very awesome online rpg I've been playing off and on for years now. Ignore the harsh criticism the games fun and not pay to play, not that much anyway. I'm lvl 105 and I never needed money to get far in this. There is a learning curve but don't expect grind for days just to get a lvl gameplay. This mmo is very fast paced and rewards you nicely for your time. There's even daily level up events so you are guaranteed some progress. Try it out, its free and the graphics are nostalgia greatness.

One of the all time great classic MMOs, it holds up surprisingly well and is very worth checking out in free to play mode. Immensely janky but runs very well on modest hardware (as you'd expect for a 25 year old game).
There is nothing else coming close to it, so I just keep going back to it.
First off, I've played and have had an account in this game since 2003, and unlike those days, I'm on Linux now. Suffice to say, the Steam version of Anarchy Online is very much hit or miss depending on your hardware and what distro you're using. For me, it's Pop!_OS with AMD hardware, and through Steam, this game won't launch at all.
But! It works on Lutris with Wine, and that's good enough for me (this is why my Steam played time is low)
That out of the way, Anarchy Online is a very complex MMO, a far cry from the MMOs of today, i.e., flashy, simple, same-y.
AO is a sci-fi MMORPG with over 200 levels to gain. The playerbase is small now, but it keeps on chugging no matter the year. It betrays even the ideals of what Funcom is today, in that it isn't a survival game where the players are fronting the cost of server hosting. This is a real MMO, captured and frozen in time, and if you're worried about Funcom basically having this game on maintanence mode, I'll assure you that there's enough content in here to keep you busy for years.
Heck, in 2004 I never even managed to get to 220, and I'M STILL NOT THERE. Of course, nowadays, that's mostly because finding a team is a bit harder, and I'm using daily missions to gain little bits of experience. But there's a lot of fun to be had if you're starting a new character.
Twinking, running missions, going through all the public dungeons, collecting loot, hoarding creds, plopping implants into your body, and heck, PVP is still kind of active.
If you're looking for something that isn't just a cashgrab MTX MMO that'll be dropped in 2 years by NCSoft or some other pjrofit driven company, just play Anarchy Online.

Twenty-four years is a long time for any game, but for an MMORPG, it calls for a significant remake that incorporates modern gaming features, updated graphics, expanded lore, and new quests. I recognize and appreciate the incredible experiences this game provided in the early 2000s. While those experiences still hold value in Sci-Fi Sauce, I strongly believe that this game is a gem that deserves a second chance. Therefore, a remake is essential. However, given its current state, I cannot support it.

I have only been 'into' the Steam version a few hours-seems fine.
In the game there are three main factions. Within these are hundreds of small group that oft times war Ginst each other. From monsters to flying aircraft and a few spells to fly without an apparatus every imagination can be enlarged.

Abandoned and outdated game. The launcher feels like it’s from the 2000s, clunky, almost like a virus. After a bazillion patches and reloads, you’re met with a login screen without any registration form. Even if you register on the site, you won’t receive a confirmation email.
And if you somehow manage to get past all these layers of inconvenience, you’re greeted by a character creation system that expects you to blindly choose between four races (breeds), each offering drastically different gameplay styles, without any real explanation. But it doesn’t stop there; next, you’re forced to pick from fourteen classes (professions), again with no clear guidance on what the game actually offers or how it plays.
This is exactly why I prefer classless MMORPGs, you don’t have to waste hours digging through wikis, reviews, and guides just to figure out what you might enjoy before even setting foot in the game world.
Great old school MMORPG. Yes the graphics show their age but look better than a lot of games from the same era because at the time the graphics were ahead of the competition. AO has deep, complex systems and a very original premise. It has so much content to enjoy as well. Interesting character classes as well that go beyond the usual choice. The game is very solo friendly thanks to a lot of QoL player things like buffbots, inplant bots, travel bots and mission rollers. Population is okay and seems to be euro-heavy. But depending on where you are you could not see many people. I would recommend that you bring a friend along and you will have tons of fun. There really is no other game like this one. I think only the original Star Wars Galaxies had this level of detail in its systems. I played this at launch and am back again having a great time. It's quirky, fiddly and sometimes a bit buggy but that is part of its charm.
The only negatives are that the publisher seems to keep it on life support so don't expect new content or fast responses to petitions.
Bottom line is it's free to try so why not try it? There will never be another MMORPG made as deep as this one.
Funcom's non-traditional fantasy MMORPGs like this one and Secret World Legends are just something else. Even after all this time, Anarchy Online is a captivating experience that somehow holds up despite its dated graphics and overall clunkiness. Perhaps like with the old Gothic, once you get into the rhythm of the game, you'll realize it's less clunky than it initially seems to be. The game and themes are basically transhumanism, space and technology. For example, if you like the Deus Ex series, you might like the vibe a lot.

On est sur un bon vieux MMO Néo Futuriste bien complexe, il va vous faire suer mais la satisfaction d'avoir enfin réussi ce que vous vouliez faire sera colossal, plein de classe et 5 Races pas plus toute très spécifique selon les combinaisons, des quêtes à foisons, des donjons dans tous les sens, une progression fluide mais pas directrice. la version Payant composé de Plein de chose dont une dimension qui serait un jeu à lui tous seul !
Bref un jeu incroyable qui a bercé mon enfance et qui mérite bien plus de joueur, même si les graphisme sont vieux franchement lancez vous dans l'aventure et accroché vous cela en vaut la peine !

I started a couple day to play again, however there is no way to make a payed account.
Every time you log out, if you are a new player, you have to retrieve a password generated from another site. There is no. way to choose your own password.
I got pretty tired of this very quickly and uninstalled the game.
Not gonna play a game where i suddenly cannot log in nor make a payed account to benefit from what that offers. Shadowland, Alien invasion.

So Anarchy Online is a very old Science Fiction MMORPG released in 2001, putting this up there as one of the oldest MMOs to still be running. This shows a lot, so off the bat you really have to have low expectations going into this or you will probably bounce off very quickly. Read [i]everything[/i] through this lens. I tried to play the game 2 or so times over a decade ago, but resources were even worse from what i can remember. A guide mentioned below is the reason i decided to give it a real try this time. Theres bugs, quirks, sometimes crashes, inflation, sparse updates, basically most issues you can expect from a game running this long. So let me try to lay things out in a manner that seems coherent and helpful. I will try to split the categories meaningfully.
[h1]Before You Play[/h1]
Before you even play theres some things you need to know:
There are 2 clients. The "old" client and the "new" client. The old client is the original 2001 client while the new client is an attempted "remaster" of the graphics. The new client is marked to have increased instability and incompatibility with community addons/themes. I have never used it but this is the prevailing idea. The old client is mostly stable, but sometimes crashes when zoning into the main "hub" of the game (or at least of the non expansion places, ICC). As in it happens maybe once a play session at most and most of the time not at all. Steam only uses the old client.
This game is from a time where information was not spoon fed, datamined, easily available, and nothing has been done to change that. You will want to use various resources outside of the game to help with this:

Faffy's guide is single handedly the reason i decided to give the game a fair shot. It includes a massive amount of things you need to know to get off the ground, start your character, and not ♥♥♥♥ it up. It even has a mini guide for every class on gear and other milestones. There are other resources linked inside of itself, so please make use of everything.
[h1]Monetization[/h1]
So AO's model is essentially F2P have access to base game + 1st expansion (Notum Wars) while a paid subscription allows you access to the entire game. No box price. This includes the Keeper and Shade class not being available to F2P players. The base sub price is the typical [b]$14.99[/b] per month. It does scale down heavily, the yearly sub only costing about $99.99. One thing of not is that F2P players do [b]not[/b] have access to the market system or are able to send mail. This means you have sell things the old fashion way and need to make an alt account to transfer credits (games currency) or items to alts. You can receive mail from paid players however.
It does have a [b]cash shop[/b]. The good thing about this is the cash shop is mostly irrelevant. Most things can be purchased from other players with credits (more on the economy later) but also the value of a lot of these items are very low. The biggest thing is that this game DOES have a way to legally purchase credits, as you can buy an item that gives 30 days subscription time from the cash shop and sell it in game. This is called a [b]GRACE[/b]. One thing of note is that you cannot purchase a GRACE until you have been subscribed for a full month, presumably to combat CC fraud.
[h1]Story, Setting, Theme[/h1]
Gonna be honest i know a story exists but this is going to be an area i have zero idea of. What i do know is that the vibe is VERY Sci Fi. Guns, energy weapons + armor, flying vehicles, etc. A lot of areas though do give off a more Phantasy Star or Star Ocean "sci fi but also not really" vibe, if you get what i mean. I still really like the idea. A lot of the classes are also very flavorful.

This game basically uses the holy trinity. Healers, Tanks, DPS. Issue is that there really is only one dedicated optimal Healing and Tank class, while the rest basically fall under DPS with varying amounts of supportive elements (buffs/debuffs/CC/etc). Some classes can perform other roles to a lesser degree. [b]Note this will be the only thing i will be going off of paid accounts for, i was provided this info from a veteran player[/b]. Fixer is reportedly not used in end game groups at all.

Anarchy Online is an old game. But honestly, MMOs aren't what they used to be. This game gives those same feelings, you just have to give it a chance and look past the graphics. The depth is insane.

The first game that started my acquaintance with online. It ended with the character being stuck under the stairs at the exit from the city and unable to get out. He stayed there for about a year. Then there was an amazing immersion into the world and its history, completing missions, creating a brood of characters and studying ent ...
Ent is the main feature of the game. Before the heyday of the Elder Scrolls series, the ent of anarchy was the best in the gaming world, and the book "Prophet without honor" was the best book on the game.
The heyday of the game, in my opinion, was in 2006-2009. Then, alas, the game first slipped into casual, and then remained a refuge for a dozen bug-lovers and professionals. Now it doesn't deserve more than three stars.
But I can't give it less than four stars. A year and a half in the Wandering Profits alliance is still remembered as the best time of my gaming life.

There is really no MMORPG like Anarchy Online. Anarchy Online has so much depth and complexity even after 20+ years there are some systems people don't understand the exact math and science behind it.
In World of Warcraft you get a gear drop and it has a level requirement and you throw it on... Anarchy Online let's you put a ton of gear on before the normal level it was meant on through complex twinking of your character skills, implants, weapons, armors, and special items, nano buffs, and towers, cities, etc.. Just to boost your Stats to wear something that might be meant to be level 100 at level 30 for example.
Like I said the depth and how complex and what you can do is insane and quite fun.
After 20 years the game holds up quite decent compared to a lot of other games that are 20 years old. Sure the graphics are more rough, but if you can see past those I think you will enjoy Anarchy Online a lot.
PS: If you only see 1-3 people online on steam it's because the second you launch the game it stops tracking time played. Funcom never cared to fix this and so their for many people think it does not work. First off most don't use steam client, and second it does not track time properly like I said. I would say there is at least 100 online at off hours and up to 300-500 at peak hours. You can have 50+ people in bore/icc alone during peak hours.

I was going to subscribe to get access to SL and AI. But I've been locked out of my free account for the second time in a month, (the first time being 10 minutes after creating the account) and can't get back in. Avoid like the plague. If you remember the glory days, the empty streets of Rome and Omni-1 will just make you feel sad.
The Game is 30 years Old and the first mmorpg of it's venue. That said it is wrought with disaster. First the People who run the game are not nice nor friendly and just as soon kick a player from the game with no respect even if the game is a paid account leaving anything needed to a pay to play game, intended to be a thousand Dollar game. Even at that you will be talked to in the game as a loosing prop. even scolded and talked to as a fool by those running the game. They know the game is meant to be played by groups to advance and there are not those people in the game. you will be a single player in a multi player game talking to a hostile community and spending loads of cash to rectify the problem, and that will not help in game..

A great game plagued by horrific marketing decisions and a fundamental misunderstanding of what to do to make an MMORPG popular. That said, it's an absolute gem of a game, beneath all its issues.
Right now, I still think the game is fun to play for new players and returning veterans alike. However; Development seems to have ceased and the playerbase is dwindling down to its final loyalist fans. Anarchy Online's end does seem to be nearing, but it's still worth having some fun with, while it lasts.

The best MMO experience I ever had between 2001-2011. The population has gone down quite a bit but don't let that discourage you from trying this game, This is a game you MUST experience if you're interested in science fiction or MMORPGs.

When I started playing the game, I felt like I was stepping into a really deep and wide world. Anarchy Online initially impressed me with its diversity and freedom. But unfortunately, at some points I realized that it fell short of my expectations.
The best part of the game is definitely the breadth and freedom. There is a wide variety of abilities, races and quests. This gives you the opportunity to choose your own play style. However, such breadth and variety can sometimes be a bit overwhelming and confusing for beginners.
In terms of graphics, unfortunately you can feel the age of the game. Even though it's an older game, it's visually behind the times. This may diminish the game's appeal for some players.
Another problem was that the beginning phase of the game was quite challenging. The game doesn't give you enough guidance on exactly what to do, which can make for a frustrating experience in the beginning.
All in all, Anarchy Online is notable for its vast content and freedom. However, the aging graphics and difficulties in the early stages take some of the fun out of the game.

If you are looking for a deep game world and different gameplay options, Anarchy Online might be for you. However, it might not satisfy you visually, and the challenges at the beginning might frustrate you a bit.

This game is no longer free to play. I had two free accounts that are no longer free. I have tried multiple methods to reactivate my accoutns but the are no requiring a subscription to play. I have never had a subscription on these accounts. Reaching out to Customer Support has bee fruitless. Been over a month since I contacted customer support and still no reply. I would recommend that steam remove this false advertising from its store page. I have worked hard on multiple characters and have even supported the store. I have two separate paid accounts that I have now cancelled. Farewell Anarchy Online.
I used to love this game. Great community, amazing atmosphere, several really original concepts, some of them unsurpassed to this day (hot-swap twinking anyone?).
But that was decades ago. Literally.
It is a miracle that the game is still running today, but is it really worth it to revisit the nostalgia? Honestly, I don't think it is.
The very first thing you see after you create your character and enter the world is a message to pay money for power leveling. With more messages offering more shady services following. The once-great community is long gone, the whole place seems to be hijacked by annoying bots.
I wasn't even able to finish the first quest (the very first quest!), since the spawning area is being camped 24/7. Maybe if you are a ranged character armed with an insane amount of patience, you would be able to finish it eventually and continue on your journey. But honestly, why would you want to waste your time in such toxic environment?
It is quite sad to see the game in this state, but I guess it's time to move on. It was fun while it lasted.

Started playing AO in -02 thanks to my brother. I still have accounts and logg in now and then just to reminisce how far ahead this game was at the time. 5 stars to infinity and beyond.

Should you play Anarchy Online?
Well it looks like crap. It's expensive if you want to sub.
But I would still recommend it! The humour (in conversations with NPCs) is top notch.
The Shadowlands quests have deep lore, especially on Omni-Tek side (or Unredeemed if you stay neutral).
I have played this game on and off for over 20 years. Taking long breaks. But it always feels like coming home and a huge part of this is the (now sparse) community. People go out of their way to support and help you.
The music is very nice too.
So if you don't mind the dated gameplay, graphics and quest design (and frequent crashes of the new client) give it a go. You can start free-to-play (or fr00b), but I recommend to actually buy a sub.

Ok to be fair it has P2W shop now but even without paying anything you can enjoy most of what content is available. There is a new graphics engine client on the official website and after you install steam version just copy the new engine client folder over your steam folder if you want steam to track your play-time.
Also, you'll need to add a command to the launch options under properties cuz for some reason steam won't track play-time without it.

The depth of statistics and logic behind min-maxing is quite deep, something missing in most MMO's.

I haven't played this game in a while. However, I have more time spent in this game than I wish to acknowledge. I've played this game from base and for each expansion like: notum wars, shadow-lands, Alien invasion, etc.
There is no other game like this in existence. The current state of the game might not be well populated, yet the content of this game is profound. There's no easy equip item button. You have to raise stats to equip items and sci-fi implants that upgrade stats and weapon skills. SL brought symbiants to replace implants for endgame, and all levels. You still use implants to buff skills to put in symbiants, however. You have nano-tech programs which are like spells and buffs. You can purchase and create a organizational city (they use orgs instead of guilds).
There are ground and flying vehicles.
The lore and plot of the game advance the pvp element of the game. This was largely ruined as populations decreased which made multi-box users more prevalent.
what else can I say, this game has /fblock, /kiss /bow and other emotes. The music is amazing as well.
What I will always remember is the global servers and making friends around the world, like Romania, the UK, Japan, Sweden, Canada, Belguim, Australia, etc. Other games are localized and lack this interaction. -Lunarsolace-

AO ist leider ein Spiel, daß es nicht mehr wert ist es zu spielen. Zum einen wären da die Server, die teilweise so sehr laggen, daß es unspielbar ist. Dann sind da die sogenannten Multiboxen, gegen die Funcom nichts unternimmt. Wie auch, es gibt ja keine aktiven GMs mehr. Und dann haben wir die Stacker und die AFK-Grinder und das extreme Chinafarming und Duping, an dem sich Spieler mit realem Geld Dinge holen können, die regulär als Spieler in diesem Spiel nicht mehr möglich sind, da das Gruppenspiel aufgrund von Multiaccount und dummen Afk-Grinden zerstört wurde (im übrigen verbietet das Geldwäschegesetz das eigentlich). Es gibt kein Afk-Logout, was ein großer Fehler ist. Und dann haben wir noch die Dropraten von manchen Dingen, wie den Doja-Chips. Eine Katastrophe. Man verbringt schon mal Stunden damit nur um einen Chip zu kommen. Hochgerechnet auf vielleicht drei Toons sind das sechs Stunden. Sechs Stunden für ein bißchen XP verbringt man mit diesem Grind und dann hat man keine Quest mal erledigt oder vielleicht eine Mission. Da sind ja die sogenannten Inf-Mish. Auch ein stupider Grind, der keine Drops o.ä. bringt. Im übrigen sind die Drops restriktiv nur auf bestimmten Mobs zu finden, die oh schaut, nur mit einer Gruppe oder Raid oder eben Multiboxern zu bewältigen sind. Arbiter nur alle zwei Wochen für eine Woche da, wenn er nicht verbugged ist und fehlt. Funcom hat einfach zu viel zugelassen und das Spiel zerstört. Zudem das Endlevel zu erreichen mitsamt Research etc dauert einfach viel zu lange, wenn man fair spielt ohne AfkGrind. Jetzt kassieren sie eben über ihren Shop noch ab und investieren kein bißchen mehr. Endgame ist nicht vorhanden, da das PvP durch Multiboxer zerstört wurde und die ganzen Questreihen Multiaccounter dann solo machen. Für Spieler, die das Craften mögen: In diesem Spiel nicht vorhanden. Quality of life im Spiel: Nicht vorhanden. Die Stunden, die man in diesem Spiel verbringt sind besser aufgehoben in Spielen, wo man sich auch noch kümmert und der Fortschritt auch fixer ist, und da bleibt am Ende noch Zeit für einen Waldspaziergang und man ist ausgeglichener. Schulnote: 6 für dieses Solo/Egogrinderspiel. Endgame nicht vorhanden. Balancing miserabel. Grafik war schon immer lausig in dem Spiel, Serverperformance Katastrophe. Audio ist ganz ok. Kein Badwordsfilter bei Charerstellung. Und der monatliche Beitrag bei 17 Euro eh völlig überzogen. Das Spiel könnte, wenn Funcom das überhaupt will, nur gerettet werden, indem man restriktiv Cheaten verbannt und mehr QoL einführt (die sogenannte XP-Armor bringt ja nicht viel, wenn es vernünftige Combatarmor verhindert), sowie die Dropraten verbessert und mehr auf andere Mobs noch verteilt. Spiel ist nicht empfehlenswert.

Лор - главная фишка игры. До расцвета серии Elder Scrolls лор анархии был лучшим в игровом мире, а книга "Prophet without honor" - лучшей книгой по игре.
Расцвет игры, по-моему, пришёлся на 2006-2009 гг. Потом игра, увы, сначала скатилась в казуальщину, а потом осталась прибежищем для десятка багоюзеров и профессионалов. Сейчас больше трёх звёзд не заслуживает.
Но поставить ей меньше четырёх звёзд я никак не могу. Полтора года в альянсе Wandering Profits до сих пор вспоминаются как лучшее время игровой жизни.

Its an old game, but I still find it really fun. I really like the random missions, and I pretty much just do that, pretending to be some kind of futuristic agent doing assignments for the corporations.
Might be a deep game here. Or just unnecessarily complicated. Implants are interesting, for example: something like armor, but inside the body. But of course you must choose three clusters for each implant, (each cluster provides a specific enhancement), obtain them, upgrade them....
Very dated graphics, and what I saw of Rubi-Ka was very drab. The tutorial is inaccurate in places, or obsolete. Leveling up requires you to choose which of dozens of skills to upgrade, and by how much. Beginner guides refer to web pages which no longer exist. Combat seems to consist of pressing "attack" & waiting until someone dies.
None of these are reasons not to play Anarchy Online: it's just a matter of where you want to spend your gaming hours. And hey, it's free to play ;)
Don't let steam lie to you. I've been playing since like 2009-2010. Please send help, funcom has held me hostage in a basement at threat of hacked medi blades. They won't let me out of the basement.

This is my all time favorite game...of all time.
It's due a proper remake for sure but after recently getting back into the game I can say it's still enjoyable.
If you're someone who wants instant gratification with little effort this game is not for you.
It's an MMORPG...that mean you WILL be grinding...you WILL be traveling....you WILL have to be patient.
The community this game has is superb also.
If you've ever played Anarchy Online, you'll know how good a mmorpg can be. But also how sad it can be to see the developers let it die. Honestly by far one of the best games to ever exist, shame they just lent towards Ragnarok, which is terrible in comparison.
Every Clammer, Omni scum or Neut, will always cherish this game, may the game gods gift us a game where you can twink like you can in this, it's in a absolute league of it's own.

Wish Funcom would make a modern version of Anarchy Online, with the same narrative, factions, locations etc.
Nothing was ever as immersive for me as AO in its prime. I'm certain if they did it, it would draw a huge number of people in.

If you can get past the graphics there definitely a few months worth of play here. Anarchy Online can be a very grindy game. The game is fun despite being 20 plus years old but updates are very rare. Raids and Pvp are mostly one person with a bunch of accounts.
Play at your own risk you may lose access to your account at anytime due to some bug and there is no support to help you get it back.

For as old as the game is, and the fact that the devs have all but bailed on it- one of my fav MMO's I've ever played! HUGE community that is still active, and always helpful! LOVE IT!
I have played for over fifteen year off and on. The depth and constant variety of game-play keeps drawing me back. It is the small things that still surprise me. How the dated graphics can still at time be beautiful, the music full of grandeur and suspense, the mission fun and rewarding.
It is not an easy learning curve for the new player but one that rewards the effort and the community continues to be friendly and helpful. With the base game free to play it is well worth trying.
Despite the 1st game director Gaute Godager's lack of vision and disastrous Shadowlands, this game survived 21 years and is still striving because of the ginormous amount of content that you can discover. So, you should jump in and have fun as well.
played this game for YEARS and still had things to finish, 15+ years of this game and multiple end game characters and i gotta say, it was an amazing game, still is, and surprised its still running. if you can get past the steep learning curve it's really a great game.
The Good: Like many others have already stated, Anarchy Online was the pinnacle of MMORPG's. Back before the cash-grab and hand-holding was the norm. While many of us have played for nearly two decades, this is a game that continues to draw you back in as no matter how hard you try, you'll never find something quite worthy of replacing it. The skill system is top notch allowing you ample freedom to build your character, and even mess up your character's skills, however you like. With it being 20 years old, it definitely has some quirks, but as you progress you gain a sense of accomplishment when gearing that no other game has provided. (and likely never will). The community has dwindled over the years, but those remaining are incredibly helpful and you'll have no problem finding friends. This game thrives on the friendships it helps create.
The Bad: As a 20 year old game that has lost dev support, not everything has been kosher. The economy is in shambles, but not in the sense that you'll never be able to afford any items. Outside of the generosity you'll find from other members, the items you can farm within your first day of playing can allow you to accumulate wealth very quickly. The hardest part is finding creative ways to store that wealth.
I think everyone should give this game a shot if unique skill systems and a social game are what you are looking for, but I can not stress enough the importance of finding an Organization (guild) to help you along the way. If you're after a more pure experience, there is also a dedicated group of players that routinely run the "Ironman Challenge" where they level their characters as if it was day 1 of launch and progress together in organized fashion leaning heavily on each other as they chase max level. Anarchy Online is worth adding to your library of games and very easily will find it's way to the top of your Greatest of All Time list.

Played this game at launch. I can honestly say it holds up well even now. The economy is messed up, but it's perhaps made the community even better to compensate. I like the game and have greatly enjoyed playing again. I'm still on a free account and have had a lot of fun, but am very tempted to go paid just to support what I'm getting so much enjoyment from.

This is by far my favorite MMO. This game does have a pretty big learning curve, but the community is largely quite helpful and you are likely to have a harder time finding people that aren't willing to help than otherwise. The player base is not what it used to be, but the players that are left are generally very helpful and there are still plenty of guilds (Organizations) that you can join to help you along even further.
Despite having played it for some time, I know little about the actual story or questlines as I generally just find myself running along, leveling, and finding loot. However, there are plenty of dungeons/instances that you can explore and enjoy as well as bosses to fight.
My biggest draw about this games is that when you do spend your time getting used to it, and how the systems work is the Twinking. No other MMO gives you what Anarchy can give you as far as twinking is concerned. Some items are level locked and that does limit you slightly, but there are tons of weapons and armors that aren't, and if you become experience enough you can twink a level 1 character out with some crazy stuff - making it able to kill bosses meant for level 60. Granted, this process can be overwhelming if you have just started playing and can be quite intensive when it comes to in-game currency, but I highly recommend it as there are always uses for twinks at almost any level. Not to mention, twinks make for incredibly fun 1v1 and world PVP
Despite what steam says, I have played this game for many hours over the years. I normally play using the launcher on their website, but there is nothing wrong with using steam's version either.

Unlike most current multi-player games, the substance of appeal is not from the gratuitous graphics used to attract players; No, Anarchy Online is dated there but the real appeal comes from the character dimensions of the game and the design mechanics for open-world player v. player - No current player v. player multi-player focused game has achieved this type of balance due to the extensive open-world map and localization of the player v. player zones within this open map. Should this game ever become remade with new trade-skill recipes, mission story arcs and compiling the different releases into one uniformed game than Anarchy Online will be top dog - You cannot beat Anarchy Online on the depth and dimensions available to building a character - a real play, as you want deal.
Ignore what Steam says - I've sunk at least 1000 hours into this game since it was released. I like it, but I don't recommend it to new players. It looks old and it plays old, and the skill system and upgrade systems are impenetrable to a new player without looking up guides etc. I could write an essay on this game, but the tl;dr is that this is the biggest missed opportunity in MMOs.

The game mostly consists of doing one mission after the other to level. Find an org (guild), and that might change, but if you run solo, this is going to be one monotonous ride to endgame
Tab-targeting - if you're used to more modern action MMOs, this is going to be a slow-motion snoozefest by comparison
Figuring out how to build implants, gear yourself, getting the right nanos etc, is a science in itself and you'll need a guide or two to work it out.
Complex skill and item upgrade systems - unless you pay attention to how you spend your points, you'll end up with a borked character
And despite that complex upgrade system, the combat is laughably simple. Set combat on, and the rest is mostly automatic save your "specials" which take x amount of seconds to refresh. Cast a nano (spell) every now and then to break the monotony if you have a caster character.
Shadowlands - turned this science fiction game into some sort of weird fantasy.
Incomplete map - there's all these holes in the map where areas were meant to be, but never made it into the game - I think Funcom ran out of money before they could finish AO.

And the biggest bad? This could have been the greatest MMO ever made - it definitely had the potential. Its only real competition at release was Ultima Online and Everquest, both fantasy games. This was a pure science fiction game that promised so much. And failed. Poor launch, bad first impressions, bugs, exploits, cumbersome and confusing skill systems all consigned this game to the also-ran bucket. And for 20 years it's limped along in mostly maintenance mode played by a faithful few and the odd curious newbie.
Anarchy Online was a fantastic MMORPG for its time. I've played on and off for decades at this point. There is still some joy to be wrung from the nostalgia, and the underlying systems are still complex and satisfying. The world is massive and truly open. The classes are interesting. They even implemented some QOL changes in the last few big updates that will be welcome to old players and will help new players find the game to be more accessible.
However, I can't recommend things in their current state. Setting aside the issues with the "new engine" that is still in beta after 10 or so years, the support for the game is nonexistent at this point. Development has slowed to nothing, putting the game into permanent maintenance mode. No new content will be developed from this point on. Worse than that, the backend suffers from the same lack of support. If you have an issue with the site, or with billing, it will be weeks or months before you get a reply. And when you do, don't expect anything helpful. I have been experiencing an issue where re-activating my account results in a double-charge for a single subscription. I've been in a weeks long back-and-forth with support that began with them telling me that the charge wasn't real, and then ended with them insisting that even though it is happening, that it shouldn't be happening and it's somehow my fault. Though they refuse to tell me how or why it's happening, or what I'm supposed to do to prevent it in the future. The game is fun but it's just become a cynical money pit. They don't care about the players or their experience. They'll overcharge you and ignore you until you finally just walk away.
Amazing game! I played it when it was first released and decided to return all these years later. Fantastic stuff If you are looking for an MMO but want a more Sci Fi feel to it check out this game! Can easily play it as a full free to play!
it was good ten years ago when ppl played it and it was developed. i can no longer recomend this game to say the truth. i still play it occasionaly but only missing the nostalgia. but ICC the main place where people hang out is close to empty most of the day.
i still play the game ocasionally. and the way equipment and gear works is advanced, compared to other games.. the combat is simple and you can play it your sleep after a while,
The community is very mature, and the complexity of the game keeps the whiny and troll teens away at least
