The key skill element of this game is learning to estimate from nominative determinism whether Sir Skullstomper Metalbeard will or will not demonstrate himself a fiercer combatant than Ceolwulf Man-Melter the Archon of Rage. Once one has a sense for this, world conquest is in reach!
I l beat the bandit kind, erected many flags to the proud and upright glory of Phallustriana, beat the demon horde, and unknown lands opened opened wide to the passage of my girthy armyies.
Then I stabbed the heart of the world and got booted to desktop having not saved in 8 hours.

Absolute banger. This is the type of game that won't overload you with information, but give you just enough to understand the situation you are currently in. I mostly enjoy the text art for events and people's faces. Do not look up anything about this game, please go in blind to enhance your experience. It's a 10/10 for me. Shout out to the random gigachad who got me this game for free.

Pirated first because I wasn't convinced it could deliver all it promises. It absolutely does. Buy & play without a second thought.
The game is great. I love it with all my gamers heart! It is not for everyone though, obvioulsy, I think no point to debate that... but for certain people, certain mindset, certain mood - this is a great game. On my personal example, I can tell that I grew up playing MUD games, text based paragraph games or ancient Ogame, and games alike (yeah I am that old :)). I dont understand modern games, I am very bad at them too. So for me, Warsim is touching all the presure points that spells chill and good mood during some free time. I appreciate everything developer have put together in this gem of a game! I can't wait to uncover some hidden things (I suck at games in general so it might take a while). Mr Millward : thank you for your work, you are among the greatest !
At the time of writing this review I am only close to 4 hours in, but the list of things I can say I like about this game is not small, but what I can say I really like about this game is the amount of lore you can discover about a town or one person, for example, I was exploring the west and came across the village of Smallhaven, in that village I found the ox-head tavern and the game went as far as to let me ask the tavernkeeper about the taverns namesake and there was even a trophy room cataloguing the tavernkeepers experiences. So going off of that, Dev. you have made something very special and I can only see and think of good things for you and the future of your game.

My only possible criticism is that exploration locations are not randomly-generated, so exploration becomes somewhat redundant on repeat playthroughs.
Otherwise, this is a truly phenomenal empire management title, with enough flexibility to allow truly marathon playthroughs, or brief playthroughs that more closely mirror the amount of time it would take to complete an Oregon Trail playthrough. I would love to see some form of sequel or expansion to this title...I have a hankering for more of this game.

As far as text based games go, this one's high up there. Actually pretty good. There are enough QoL things that you can have automate for you, but you can also get into the fine detail and to it all yourself should you want to. The game's story and world is full of life and I find myself remembering it as I write this review a year later. I did only play one or two full games, but what I did, I enjoyed and found it a memorable experience.
A bit overwhelming without a GUI like nethack or dwarf fortress, and you can't extradite to improve relations which is pretty gamebreaking

Warsim is a charming management/ strategy/ adventure game, that sees you commanding a small kingdom filled with undiscovered wonders, odd characters, medieval politics, and caveman fighting pits. Each turn will see you doing all sorts of things, including but not limited to: receiving peasants with crazy requests in your throne room; waging wars; updating laws and infrastructure; exploring a world filled with unique locations; performing sacrifices to appease demon and human lords; and teaching gnomes how to gamble. A typical run will last from a few dozen to hundreds of turns (in-game years), during which your lands will grow from a small settlement in the middle of nowhere surrounded by seemingly unbeatable foes, to a massive empire that spans an entire continent and vassalized everyone else. Or you'll be destroyed by bandit raids and goblin invasions. The last one is the most likely.

+ There is a high variety of things to do in a turn, so the game doesn't game stale. A typical turn will see you receiving the visitors to your throne room, exploring the realm, hiring mercenaries to fight for you, arranging diplomacy, investing on the kingdom, betting on arena fights, and more. Each decision requires balancing your resources, military capacity, the way you want to be seen in your kingdom and your relations to other factions. As such, despite it's graphical simplicity, the game is surprisingly deep, and the gameplay loop is quite engaging, and can keep you playing for hours on end.
+ Great sense of humor. Most interactions have a small joke in there somewhere, with some big ones here and there. Despite the horrors of facing off against cannibal trolls and demoon hordes, the game maintains a pretty casual and light-hearted atmosphere.
+ Lots of replayability. Even though the explorable world isn't randomly generated, the depth of the game allows for wildly different playstyles. Want to make friends with everyone and just explore the wide world at your own pace? Want to be a brutal dictator and declare war on all your enemies, while forcing your population to work around the clock while having everyone wear top hats and be called William? Want to just stay in your lands and watch arena fights? You can do all that.

- Despite it's variety, the game can get repetitive, especially on longer runs, Once you've already explored everything and there are far too many visitors for you to attend to, the things you actually end up doing in a run become quite limited. Though if you reach this point, it's probably time to start a new game anyway.
Overall, Warsim is a very unique, enjoyable, and deceptively addicting game, that can provide countless hours of entertainment and barbarous war crimes if you enjoy this sort of game. If you like management and strategy games, try to look past the unusual graphics and give this game a shot.
Very entertaining and fun. Still learning how to play and managing the kingdom. Definitely worth picking up! It would be interesting if Wastes ever makes it way back. Read about that game in the menus haha

I installed a trap door in my throne room for visitors I didn't l like, because I thought it would be funny.
Then it turned out running a kingdom is a bit harder than I thought so I almost never got to use it, so the game just keeps reminding me it's there as an option that I paid big money for, in red text.

Went from building my armies, invading lands, having champions fighting in my arena to then moving on to owning a monster of my own to fight other monsters. Only to stumble upon a secret dev room during that monster fight and having a conversation with a projection of the developer of the game. This game is fantastic

My ten year old daughter and I bought the game on a whim, as she found the review funny. She thought the game was even more hilarious when she could serve a demon overlord. She found it even more hilarious when she could [spoiler] defy [/spoiler] him resulting in her [spoiler] death [/spoiler].
However, what keeps her playing is the strategic depth and nuances of bigleroll. Mastering its intricacies will keep her mentally stimulated for countless hours. Needless to say, this game is highly recommended for parents looking to enhance the child's understanding probability, and statistics!

I honestly expected this game to be overwhelming even before I bought it I assumed I would experience information overload instantly. But the developer handled the complexity gracefully.
The option to choose how deep you want to go into certain systems is a fantastic idea. It let me keep playing even when I didn’t fully understand every menu or submenu. If the tutorial had forced me to read through every option and mechanic in the tutorial screen, I wouldn’t have retained any of it and probably stop playing the game altogether;.
The main gameplay loop is really charming for me. If you enjoy spreadsheet games, you’ll probably love this one too. I also appreciated being able to delegate the parts I didn’t want to manage.
The game feels like it has an infinite amount of content, although that illusion somewhat disappeared for me when I started caring only about the numbers.

This game is like a kids pool the size of the Atlantic; you've got a lot of room for adventure but you'll never find much depth. The game is 60% reacting to events, 20% deciding which of the build paths you want to take for your kingdom, and 20% active adventuring.

Phenomenal text-based game, and worth your time if you can enjoy such a thing. Very fun, interactions are quite repetitive at times but after eight whole years the amount that's here is enough
Decent game , would not pay more then the sale for it at 4€. As the replayability is there but is essentially a bit shallow and repetetive after a longer session as it is not as deep as you may find to believe. I was essentially at some point spam clicking through it and had my fair amount of bugs already but had a good 4 hours out of it 1€ per hour! Can recommend if you want to see 4 hours go by doing the most dumb things with no morals as a ruler of a kingdom.

This game should be marked NSFW, because i'm getting f***ed at every turn. But its so good i played 9 hours consequtively.
Good game, but can definitely get repetitive. There's only so much you can do before you've had a taste of everything functionally unique in the game.
I'm sure I haven't seen all there is to offer just yet but runs seem to blend together now, and the systems in place to add variety to the game such as the yearly events don't really change the game all that much.
I would say something that would immediately make the game significantly more interesting is perhaps making the War part a bit more active in some way, combat now is literally just a slideshow. Not bad, but not all that engaging either.
This is not to rag on the game, I do enjoy it, just wanted to say how I felt about the few issues I had with it
So much fun, I've barely scratched the surface but I love it. It's great to see a developer who is so dedicated and great. My one thing is I wish the "mods" were able to do a bit more, this could be because I'm not using everything as I should, but I feel like they change very little of the game, but besides that everything is great!
Da mir das Spiel nicht gefällt und ich es leider nicht mehr zurückerstatten konnte, schreibe ich diese Bewertung. Eigentlich würde ich es neutral bewerten, aber da Steam das noch immer nicht zulässt und die Bewertungen "äußerst positiv" sind, erlaube ich mir den Daumen nach unten. Die Frage lautet schließlich: "Empfehlen Sie dieses Spiel?", und ich kann nichts empfehlen, das ich selbst nicht spielen wollen würde.
Abgesehen von den für mich oft schwer verständlichen englischen Texten trifft der Humor leider nicht meinen Geschmack. Die Furz- und Rülpslaute, die wohl auflockern sollen, kommen bei mir nicht an. Was mich jedoch wirklich stört, ist die Zeichenlimitierung bei der Texteingabe. So darf man beim Laden gespeicherter Spiele nicht die Dateiendung ".txt" eingeben, weil das Spiel nicht in der Lage ist, diese Endung selbstständig abzuschneiden. Das ist meiner Meinung nach schlampig programmiert; Bedingungen und Fehlermeldungen bei falschen Eingaben gehören zum Basiswissen der Softwareentwicklung. Man darf niemals erwarten, dass Benutzer sich strikt an interne Vorgaben halten. In einem professionellen Software-Testing würde das Spiel bei der Texteingabe vermutlich durchfallen – solche Schwachstellen sieht man im Spiel leider immer wieder.
Ich möchte das Spiel aber nicht nur schlechtreden: Für Leute, die diesen speziellen Humor mögen und gut Englisch können, kann es durchaus geeignet sein. Der Entwickler pflegt zudem engen Kontakt zur Community, und ich bin mir sicher, dass er reagieren wird, sobald er meinen Text übersetzt hat. Geschmäcker sind verschieden, und nur weil es mir nicht gefällt, heißt das nicht, dass es anderen nicht gefallen kann. Ich bin jedenfalls gespannt auf das nächste Projekt des Entwicklers (soweit ich gelesen habe, wohl im Cyberpunk-Stil) und wünsche ihm alles Gute dabei.
It's quite simple so far, not tonnes of complexity, just making small decisions which don't seem to lead to any consequences so far, but there are a fantastic amount of races and hidden explorable areas, it feels very random like Dwarf Fortress but not immersion breaking and silly like other games that try to replicate it. Well worth the play, very easy to pick up and put down.

i took this game with 50% discount so for an easy casual play it's ok. i thought it was better, since it's a testual game i think that writing is bland. It appears written by a boy. Lore is quite bland too. Exploration is nice, since there are a lot of places, but there is small to do actually, and descriptions are too simple. mm if you have a potato pc and some spare hours you can try this. nothing more

Im a big fan of CoQ and was on the main page looking at the dromad edition before it went away, and seen qud had 1 bundle and it was with this game (i already own qud. i was just curious with qud being so good what game deserved the bundle) and thats how I stumbled upon this and it deserves everybit of the bundle with qud.
I love games that are very different from the normal things people play. I like finding games that are unique and different enough to have so much depth in their own ways. I never wouldve expected to enjoy this game. Its one of those games you gotta immerse yourself in and read every dialog and enjoy the kingdom sandbox with the stories being told to you as you make your decisions.
I love how its basically a text based adventure/kingdom manger. so many different things to do as you rule your kingdom. wanna throw people in prison just cause? yeah i do that. you want to gamble on gladiator matches? oh ive lost some money. I have yet to explore the depth of the game and im just now adventuring but it scratches that text based story itch very well and making my own choices to persuade the public opinion is enjoyable.
I know i havent put much time into the game. have yet to explore any depth to it but i will say this is something i will be playing after work when im just mind numb and want a little nice adventure to ease the mind and run havoc through my kingdom and future kingdoms.

[spoiler] So im going through my line of people, theres about 200 waiting so im going through em quick. then i come across a situation where my guard tells me about a baby but 2 woman are trying to claim it as theirs. so im presented a choice. choose either woman or cut the baby in half or send both to prison...... I choose the obvious horrible one. by no means did i think i actually would be able to do it but after one cries for the other to have it i didnt believe them and confirmed my choice..... i shouldve let her keep the baby :'( [/spoiler]
To me, Warsim sits up there with games like Dwarf Fortress, CDDA, Caves of Qud, and Nethack as classic indie games. While I feel Warsim is somewhat less open ended than some of the other games I mentioned, it is still an amazing experience and is just as deep in interactions. Perhaps I am just a sucker for Ascii art, but I feel like Warsim has the type of charm and quirk that I want out of any indie game. I love the in game humor, all the silly interactions, and everything else this game brings. There is also so much hidden content that is fun to find. I honestly appreciate the straightforward strategy that the game presents. When I play Warsim, I can feel the love that Huw has for this game.

The game is described as a "deep, rich kingdom ruling sim", but it's just a lot of very simple subsystems that barely even influence one another. I kept digging, trying to find something interesting, but aside from a modestly entertaining exploration portion, everything else was very shallow. It's just a "numbers go up" game with a peculiar interface.

Warsim is a deep kingdom-ruling game, done all through text and some ASCII graphics! Basically you rule and try to take over neighboring lands, but there's a lot of depth to it. You can tinker with laws and budget, you can go on quests. You can explore and randomly find yourself entering a town with several locations that each have several people that each have several options...To say nothing of the weird species you can encounter (and fight), like Colorful Hedge Minotaurs or Baby Maggotmen. I think, if you take a look at the screenshots, you'll get a pretty good idea of whether this game is for you...And the dev has posted a lot of videos about it on YouTube. So, check it out!
Unusual but really enjoyable if you like “numbers go up” type games.
Take the economic simulation of Hammurabi as your starting point and keep adding more mechanics, gameplay layers, in-jokes, then imbue with the spirit of a humble solodev. You'll be left a with surprisingly compelling little monarchy roleplaying playground. My favorite part might be the intricate helmet generation system.
The originality and creativity present in this gem are evident. This is a labor of love and if you are a fan of ancient MUD's and such, you should try it out.

Excellent minimalist Kingdom management and story-generator game.
The quality and depth of this game far surpass anything done previously with the text-based medium besides Dwarf Fortress, Zork, and maybe the Loathing series. I implore anyone with even a passing interest in text-based RPGs or city/nation management games to give this one a try. The comedy is very reminiscent of Monty Python and the amount of explorable areas (that can change every time you start a new save!) and their depth within are absurd for side-locations that aren't even the main loop of the game, so exploration fans will be delighted to find the mysteries that lie within the realm of Aslona.
The dev is constantly listening to feedback and is quick to respond to even trivial side conversations in the official Discord server, the steam forums, and even the review page you are scrolling through right now! Very few devs are committed to their product like this, let alone solo devs.
This gem is a passion project worth every penny! My steam time doesn't represent my actual time with this game, I discovered it on the 7 seas and its quality made me pull into port and demand the real thing!
This is a very solid game. My only criticism is that some of the sounds made by performers can be quite loud (ex. snapping and strumming).
This hits all the boxes of nostalgia; good ASCII graphics, the depth in mechanics that make the game feel complete; and the random generation to allow for complete and utter replability no matter what. You could get only 40 hours out of the game, or a thousand plus. It is all up to the player and how they wish to rule. The art is priceless in this day and age as well. The dev is also very kind and responsive. Listens to feedback and is willing to implement things. It is worth every dollar.
