Short: Get it if you like typing games, especially challenging ones. It's free. Even if you do your best, this game has a tendency to drop you almost down to nothing on its highest difficulty, which feels very satisfying. I say this as averaging 130 WPM and having 100%'d the game on my sit-down. I'd totally consider getting this if a full sized game was made in the same vein, lmao.
Long: I don't play Warhammer (or 40k) games except for Total War, but I love typing games. I don't know who came up with the idea of this, but props to them. It's a short and sweet (yep, i know this doesn't work literally for warhammer 40k) game. 10/10 design for its scale and for what it is. Either a lot of effort went into this, or they had a lot of very fitting assets from other games that just meshed perfectly well. Either way, it speaks to how well the idea is.
Games like these are usually disappointing if you have any type of above average typing speed, as for some reason typing game devs tend to take average WPM as top % and high difficulties feel barely different from Medium, which makes it boring. This game (short demo?) isn't like that. I started straight on Exterminatus expecting to breeze through. I actually got dropped on the third level after missing a barrel to instantly kill a whole group and ending up gunning them down one by one due to tunnel vision, which cost me so much health that I died later on. I managed to clear the game with only that one death, but every single time, especially on the later level (5, I think?) boss, even if you type perfectly, he will hit you like a truck unlike the very first boss. The highest difficulty is truly challenging, or it is very good at making it feel like it is because it always drops you low which makes it feel like you're fighting for your life. I can't tell which, but it works. Good stuff.
I recommend it. If you're into harder typing games, this is definitely a good little minigame. If you like typing games but are average WPM, I think it's still unique and fun enough.

Frankly, it's a free typing game. If you like Warhammer and wanna appreciate the novelty for a few minutes, you can finish the game in an hour. Personally, I think it's worth your time based on it's charm alone. The way your space marine screams one liners and praise for the emperor while you type out random phrases makes for an enjoyable time while it lasts.

- Inconsistent difficulty between runs

Basically a video of a couple boltgun levels where you type to destroy enemies. Its a free mini-game and mostly promotion for the second game. The game is finished when the premise of the gameplay already is fading. There is nothing gameplay wise interestening aside the "decision" to shoot barrels instead of enemies. All in all a short and neat, free warhammer minigame. But beware: In order to 100% the game i had to manually edit the fps limit as anything above 10-20 would lock me from an achievement. Enemy attack speed is limited by fps. Therefore dont play it above 30-60 fps.

Quite fun but some stuff seems broken, the make a barrel explode without an enemy still alive to damage has way way too short time to trigger, same for the blue demons that run at you, you get a split second to react before you take damage so they pretty much are just a damage gate to proceed >:/
The third stage max difficulty was really tough to get through, not the fastest typer (~65/70 wpm here, some words are just weird to type and spelling don't make sense at first glance so you instinctively go for the usual way it's done at first) and died several times 1 encounter before end, if the blue demons was fairer time to react i would have gotten it done faster.
Did do the work around to lower fps so enemies don't burst you down so quickly and that helped.
But for the price of free i 100% recommend getting it.

Took me back to my Dreamcast days with typing of the dead. I wasn't sure how this game was going to be but it jumps you into a quick tutorial that is the first level.

Interesting but weird concept
The only real problem with this game is that sometimes it uses long phrases in English and sometimes ones that are completely in Orkish for example. Obviously one is way more familiar and easier to type than the other, so they shouldn't be both used in the same word pool.
You could be having a great run, but then you're totally crippled by some obscure Orkish phrase and die, when previously you cleared the same area no problem when it was just English. It's not really balanced.
In short, this game's over-reliance to the 40k language is an issue at times.

Beautiful game. A typing game in FPS style and free.
I once played a Warhammer 40k game and didn't like it, so I ignored the entire franchise despite its popularity. This free typing game was a welcoming olive branch, I tried and had a blast.
It's super fun, great retro art, key inputs are responsive, combat and explosions look satisfying. It plays like an FPS: as you type you automatically shoot, also reload, pick up health and shields, do melee attacks, move through portals and activate switches etc. You often face multiple enemies at once, for the best strategy don't start typing already, pause for a second, identify the enemy with a stronger weapon and take it out first.
The text varies each playthrough so each new game is fresh. The lines always make sense, even on the hardest difficulty they use normal modern English instead of old English, Latin or putting random letters together just to test speed. Occasionally you'll see explosive barrels for quick kills or timed medkits. The final boss had me typing out an oath of his beliefs, it was fun and ironic.
I just there're DLC with more maps. Highly recommend it if you enjoy typing games.

"Boltgun: Words of Vengeance" is an unexpected surprise / free demo promotion with a twist!
Made by British independent studio, but let's be honest, not really indie in the traditional sense, no matter what they want to "identify" as on their website. They are a mid-tier company by industry standards. Not a solo dev or tiny team. They got 100+ employees and do official work-for-hire licensed IP work like Warhammer 40k. Doesn't smell indie to me, maybe it was indie back in 2010, but not now. I'd say they are single-A company.
Nevertheless, their games are good! Botgun has been on my radar for some time now.
Too busy ATM, but this little FREE nugget is exactly how you sell the main game!
We got to experience the sound design, the pixel art, movement and enemy mechanics. All of them top tier, making Boltgun a certified boomer shooter like retro DOOM.
As someone who has played typing games before, my only small concerns are: that the words used are heavily from the lore and not usually used in English language, which adds a layer of difficulty.
Actually I like it, but the linguist in me is crying lol.
The enemies don't get stunlocked with every letter which means they chew through your life anyway, even if you type fast. Oh and sometimes the text appears a bit late which lets some enemies get some hits in. A little leeway would be appreciated.
Anyway, FREE game with multiple difficulty settings that can last you a few hours.

I recommend this game on multiple levels, one for fun, one for typing like a madman and the other being to scream heresy through bolted metal at the top of your lungs as you raise hell for the emperor...... pretty much just pure chaos at it's finest haha.
I spent around 3 hours trying my best to complete Warhammer 40K Boltgun: Words of Vengeance's final level on the hardest difficulty, it's pure agony and painful, but it's a worthy challenge for those who can hustle through the morbid words and crazy scenery that goes on - i do not recommend the 100% though for everyone, it's not easy and if you suffer from dyslexia and other learning problems like myself, it's best to just let it be and leave the title for either another time or leave it uncompleted.
Give it a go, have fun and be your own marine at it's finest : )

Great game if you are a fan of typing games, or just want a new experience in warhammer IP. pretty straightfoward, not very hard. Only thing that bothers me is that the game is resource limited, so I can't showcase it nor it counts towards achievements and 100% counts. Hope it gets lifted soon, not dev team problem but a steam safety measure.

This game is sick. Out of all the typing games I've played, which is surprisingly a lot, this is by about a million times the best and coolest of the bunch. It also just flatout has the best gameplay. They really nailed it with this one.

Just a short sprint at 30 minutes. Had a good time.
A fun little type-'em-up à la Typing of the Dead, but using the 40k world, specifically Boltgun's levels, enemies, and main character. But instead of running around the levels, you're on rails, and you type out sufficiently grimdark things like CONTEMPT IS MY ARMOUR or PURGE THE HERETIC to shoot your enemies to bits. And sometimes you'll have to type out THIN YOUR PAINTS or shout out Games Workshop's hometown of Nottingham, instead.
A brief but fun little experience, and since it's free it might work for you as a bit of a demo for Boltgun - after playing this, I decided to pick up the main game, and it's fun! That said, it is short, and for what it is, you'll get a bit frustrated that sometimes enemies enter the screen in a way that prevents you actually reading what you need to type.
If you're curious about Boltgun's style and want a bit of a (semi-tangential) preview, give this a go. If you're a 40k superfan who'll play anything with the badge on or spend your spare time browsing the Lexicanum, you'll love it. If you want to test your WPM in an entertaining way, try it out.

My only complaint about this game is the incosistent spelling, they use Armour (british spelling) and Honor (American spelling), it should be consistent about whether they use the U or not. it should be Armor, Color and Honor, or Armour, Colour and Honour. Overall fun game though.

To promote the upcoming sequel, the devs basically made a free mod slapped on the Boltgun game that makes it into a typing game. Your character follows a scripted path through some of the levels in the game and you type to kill enemies.
It's not [i]bad[/i], but a multiple GB download (it basically downloads the full game) for an hour of gameplay might not be worth it for you.
By all means try it out that's not a problem for you since it's free anyway.

My typing has improved
Juego fps basado en el increíble boomer shooter Boltgun, la mecánica principal consiste en escribir rápido para disparar a los enemigos y avanzar, aunque son solo 3 niveles muy breves, por lo que en nada te lo has acabado, pero como es gratis pues vale la pena dedicarle un rato
I enjoyed it, wish there was an option to require spacing, capitalisation and punctuation, similar to typeracer.
This is by far the best game to download whilst you're waiting for friends to get online. 5 missions takes 30minutes to finish all of it absolutely no negetives. Should of been doing this ♥♥♥♥ in school instead of cool math games iykyk. 10/10 IGN.
