THE KING OF FIGHTERS '98 ULTIMATE MATCH FINAL EDITION é aquele tipo de jogo que mostra por que KOF virou referência nos games de luta. O combate é rápido, técnico e muito viciante. Mesmo sendo um título clássico, ele continua extremamente divertido e competitivo.

I strongly believe this is one of the greatest fighting games of all time ever. From a time when there were truly passionate and talented people behind it. The result of a genuine creativity freedom. I can feel the passion on everything, from the character designs, the VAs, the music, the joy I get when playing with all the characters and the interaction between them. Still considered one of the best entries in the franchise with its roster and game balance. It's a shame that this game is hard to make inputs unlike the future titles or maybe that's just my skill issue.

This was my first ever introduction to KoF. I didn't have a CD of this game for PS1, and I only learned about this game when I had PC, but never had a chance to play it. However, this game always piqued my interest.

I played an hour and a half, and my impression from this game is that Japanese are still geniuses of fighting games; although this game is not another TEKKEN or Street Fighter, it is still something on its own. It is not as deep as TEKKEN, or has fluid combos as SF. KoF definitely took big inspiration from SF and other Japanese 2D games of that era, but unfortunately, I feel like it lacks identity. It looks too similar to SF, characters are not unique enough. I mean, in TEKKEN and SF you can identify a character just by looking at them, here all of them seems like randomly generated characters (there are exceptions), their attacks seem repeated. Even the final boss, Omega Rugal, spams the attacks — if you jump at him, he spams his long kicks, if you stay away, he throws electric spheres at you.

Also, I personally don't lie fighting games that have more than 4-6 buttons for attacks, I feel like it is unnecessarily convoluted for this genre, so I don't see myself playing it very long as I play TEKKEN. I have played a lot of 2D fighting games of PS1 era, and each of them had something I liked. KoF98 is the same; don't get me wrong, I don't hate this game, I just shared my criticism and opinion of this game, maybe in the future titles (I still have 2 other games in my Library, I will try them later) they will get me interested in more, who knows. However, as of now, I have mixed feeling for this game. Yeah, this game is fun and all, but again, I will get tired of it pretty quick, I am sure.

Also, they changed Challenge 5 from attacking with chain lower side to middle side, which made this challenge insanely hard, because you don't get to time to get into chain's attack range, and if you do, holding back, then immediately forward LK+LP is just almost impossible feast to do. At least when he was attacking lower side, you had momentum to actually jump at him.

EDIT (17.02.2026): I forgot to mention that this game has one of the best looking pixel art of that era I have ever seen! Seriously, that is some high level animated pixel art I have ever seen in my entire life! Respect to the artists!
