loved to hate this game on the C64. still love and hate it on pc
I LOVED this game back in the mid-80's when I played it on a Commodore 64. Ed Hobbs 1984 game for Broderbund was wonderful, with clever puzzles, interesting platforming gameplay and actual thought required. When I saw it available on Steam, I was a little bit hesitant, because this is a forty-year old game, and I was wondering if it would hold up.
The controls system takes some getting used to. The game was written for the C64's one button joystick, and the keyboard mapping is not intuitive at all, but largely, the gameplay does hold up. This was always a game more about the cleverness of the puzzles, and the interesting platform challenges than the graphics, and as such, it continues to be a lot of fun.
The Castles of Dr. Creep is a fantastic retro puzzle-platformer that starts off as a relaxing adventure and gradually transforms into a deviously challenging experience. At first, you're easing your way through eerie castles, solving clever puzzles, and navigating fun platforming mechanics. But don’t be fooled—the deeper you go, the more intricate and rewarding the game becomes.
The mix of traps, timed puzzles, and unique obstacles makes every level feel fresh and engaging. Mastering the mechanics and outsmarting the castle’s many dangers is incredibly satisfying. The steady difficulty curve ensures that each new challenge feels like a well-earned victory rather than an unfair obstacle.
If you love classic games that reward patience, strategy, and perseverance, this one is a must-play. It’s truly a hidden gem that deserves more recognition! Highly recommended for fans of retro puzzle-platformers.
Very good 2 player game.
Hey, ich finde The Castles of Dr. Creep absolut nostalgisch.
Insgesamt würde ich The Castles of Dr. Creep absolut empfehlen.
You've got to be kidding me. This is an obscure game I played for hours on the Commodore 64 in the 80's. Here it is in all its glory! The game is basically a creepy puzzle platformer and this version is probably being run on a C64 emulator because it's perfect, SID sounds and everything. You can play with a controller or with a keyboard or with both, high scores, saves, unlimited lives if you want, pretty much everything. It's also cheap, buy it now.
Well, I remeber playing this way back when i had a C64. Bought instantly. So many memories of playing this with my long gone friend came flooding back, the nostalgia was so strong i could almost taste the hubba bubba and smell the caps from our guns. thank-you so much for making this, from the bottom of my heart. You have made my year.
The castles of dr. creep awakes memories of me playing on the C64 with my brother, and trying to escape the castle. The game is very simple and yet brilliant, with a great atmosphere, it's strength is the multiplayer, playing with another person and syncing up is the heart of the game. The great improvement would be to have it ready for online multiplayer. Unfortunately, steam didn't put in the extra work, so I'm not able to play it with my friends, which is really what I would like to do.
Old is new again. 8 bit is the new retro. Dr. Creep still rules his castle and playing this on the PC brings back memories of Commodore64 and late nights playing games back in the mid 80s. I'm still gaming and to get a break from all the 64 bit "realism" of modern gaming I play this little gem.
It is smooth, it hasn't glitched yet. Game play is almost exactly as I remember it. The frankensteins, the mummies it all works like I remember. Maybe a little better. This was my favorite platform game, Impossible Mission coming in at a distant second. And Gods on the Amiga,
So, run the maze, flip the switches, fry the monsters and save the day for $1.99 US and relive those golden years when games came into our homes and we became junkies for the rest of our lives! LOL
This is a very faithful port of what was (in my humble opinion) the best puzzle game of the 8-bit era. I loved to play it on my C64 back in the 1980s, and it holds up very well today!
What distinguished The Castles of Dr. Creep from other puzzlers of the era is that each screen is not an independent level: As you move from screen to screen to explore the castle, often what you do in one area affects another area. The level design is intricate and brilliant. Success takes careful observation, and even when you work out the solution it can take a while to traverse.
Warning however, this is not a game that holds your hand and wants you to win. It is a genuine challenge so be prepared!
What a fantastic classic that doesn't lose a single step in this version over the old C64 version. This is what gaming is really like, not the soulless trappings of modern graphics and gimmicks.
A truly amazing time capsule of software. My dad and I played this on C64 back when I was around 3 years old. To see it preserved on steam is not just heart warming, but it stands as a reminder of the required reading we gamers had to fight through to make it to today. This game had so much for it's time, not the least of which was co-op puzzles! Worth a play if you want to see what we had before you were born.
The good news is that if you played this game in 1984 -- this is the original game! In all its glory. However, if you haven't played an "almost" 40 year old game recently -- then you may not realize how far computer games have evolved. I had a C64 and this was one of my favorite games. I'm sure I toasted a 1541 disk drive or two. It is fun, but can be very tedious to get through each castle. The ladders were a pain in 1984 also...
Back in the 1980's I bought 3 games for my Commodore 64, they were $5 each and came on floppy disks. All Broderbund games. Karateka, Stealth, and The Castles Of Dr. Creep. The first 2 games worked great, but Dr. Creep wouldn't work. I took it back, and they didn't have another copy, so I got a refund. I am so happy to finally be able to play this on Steam! It gives me some closure so I can tuck that old memory away. This game is hard, and requires some time and effort. I love games like this. I wish there were more Commodore 64 games on Steam!
This is one of fondest memories in gaming from my childhood, an amazingly simple puzzler that can get very complex to solve. While none of the castles are impossible to solve in single player mode, most are much easier to solve cooperatively with a friend. Now there's only two things that would make me much happier with this. One is for network play to be incorporated for two player games, and the other is to add the castles from the sequel, Dungeons of Dr. Creep. Even without these though, this is a game that can take up hours alone, and more time with friends.
One of the oldest games on Steam, and a sight older than the retro gamesI grew up with. Being obsessed with all things antiquated, I had to give Castles of Dr. Creep a try. This game is NOT easy. Unless I'm just notgood at puzzleplatformers. Most likely both. I turned infinite lives on (conveniently available on the menu screen) and it stilltook me ninety minutesto beat the first castle.
This game requites patience and memorization as well as logical thinking. The pacing is slow, with a good amount of backtracking and repetition. It could take hours to beat all the casltes even with infinitelive lives. I enjoyed what I played of it so far and expect to return to it, preparing myself for some frustration when I do. That only makes it more satisfying when you finally win!
I would recommend Castles of Dr. Creep to clever and devoted puzzle fans and to nostalgic gamers who remember it from its original release It's a faithful port of a well-made game, though it may not hook you when you first dive into it the way some games from the period do.
I have mixed feelings about this game. I have not had much fun with it, but because it is not my style. I have never liked metroidvania or puzzle games, they despair me, I am more of platform games and direct action. And this game is a maze. But if you are a gamer who likes retro and difficult and puzzle games, this is for you. So I recommend it.
The aesthetic reminds me of my old and outdated Intellivision.
7/10
not possible to play with retro joysticks.
I played this on my C64 back in the day. Love this puzzle game. Oldie but a goody.
A must-have for an old c64 gamer.
The game, for itself, would deserve a big score just for the nostalgia, and it is a good porting as well.
However, I find the menu screen to be terribly difficult to use: the cursor moves at random intervals, and to select the intended item with the cursor is extremely difficult and time consuming: you just have to hope that the cursor, looping through all the items in the screen, will end its movement on the correct item (like a slot machine).
This screen shold be fixed in order to handle the input in a decent way.
Another hint: it would be nice if also the "dungeons of dr. creep" would be included in the package.
And what about the level editor? I've always waited to be able to create my own castles!!!!
Edit:
It seems that the technical support is just amazing!!
I wrote a review a few days ago reporting the difficult input for the menu, and immediately ad update is released that seems just to fix that!!!
Amazing!! Thanks and good work!
Tutorial was fun but thats all i could do.
Trying to enter the menu? Freeze! Trying to open the manual? Wont open!
Will change this review once im able to get further
(it seems like something i would enjoy if only it was working)
Loved this game back in the day, and love it now, even more fun with 2 players.
The fundamentals of this game are solid, but every single level seems designed to spitefully waste as much of your time as possible by making you do the same thing over and over again. The most common design pattern, by far, are rooms where you have to run around in circles doing the same task multiple times to proceed. Every castle has at least one of these, and every castle except a couple has a version where you can only do the task once when you enter the room, after which you have to leave, walk through a bunch of rooms (many of which you have to re-solve the puzzles in), and then come back to do the thing again.
The most vivid example of one of these tedious loops is in the level Parthenia, which starts you on two very long platforms, one with 13 switches on it and one with 14. You need to hit a switch on one, which then lets you walk around and hit a switch on the other, which then lets you walk around and hit the second switch on the other, and so on. Completing this sequence takes 25 minutes of real time.
The levels Rittenhouse and Teasdale also seem to be broken in the current version of the game, due to hitbox issues making it impossible to make it through a couple of rooms without dying.
I really don't think this game should ever be played by anyone.
Lang ist`s her
I never had a C64 back in the day. Played this for hours upon hours upon hours with a friend at his place. Purchased it as soon as I heard it was on Steam. Love it. So much fun and so challenging. So nice to play the original as is in 2019. Thank you.
i mean yeah its a game
I'm so happy that this game is on here! I've been looking for it for YEARS. My parents had it for Commodore 64 when I was growing up, and it was so sad when the Commodore finally died. It's such a classic, and it revolves mostly around solving puzzles, some of which have a time component (like mummies chasing you, etc.) It's just awesome. Obviously the graphics are pretty primitive, but really you don't need fancy graphics to enjoy this.
Easy game mechanics combined with complex labyrinth, awesome game to play in 2+ players. Old but still good.
auf dem C=64 viel gesuchtet
und immer noch ein sehr nices game!
Bought this for pure nostalgia, but realized it holds up very well against modern puzzle games. If you have $2 it's worth every penny.
I can't even tell you how many hours I spent playing this game as an elementary school student. Clever puzzles, and even co-op! One of the best games I've every played for under $2.00.
Shooting mummies over moving walkways, running from Frankenstein’s monster hit the switch hit the switch Hit the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ switch. Climb this ladder down this pole up this ladder down this pole. This is by far the best game in existence and everything else fails in comparison to its majesty.

Wow, the original game straight from 1984! Older than me :O
If you had a chance to play this game on a Commodore 64 back in the day, you will find this game quite amusing, because it's actually the same thing but with Steam achievements:
+Original game ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
+In depth interactive tutorial
+ReadMe pdf with all the important info inside!
+Original old music and sounds (sadly the only place where the music plays is the main menu)
+13 Castles to explore - all the levels pretty much complicated mazes full of dangers.
-No cards (Why not?)
+Steam achievements
+Cheap af
If you will have any problems with the tutorial or ReadMe reading (srsly) - F1 to get to the menu and change the tutorial mode into any other castle - arrows to move - ctrl for action.

Nice retrival of an old C64 game, that I used to play, would love Steam to port a lot more of those old games to something that works nicely on a modern PC. Works exactly as expected, just like playing it on the C64.. minus the Load "*", 8, 1 waits.
meh it's ok
i would'nt recomend it to my friends
its ok
This was probably my favourite game on the C64 growing up. So far it seems unchanged from the original. Maximum nostalgia with the reveal of each new puzzle room. Still very difficult.
My only beef would be the default controller layout (not intuitive at all) and some of the controls within the game are really finicky (seems even worse than in the original). I have problems getting the teleporter to change colours, trouble getting off of ropes and ladders, etc... can't count the times I've missed a timed door because of getting stuck on a ladder/rope. At least there is a suicide button (and the option for unlimited lives is still there.)
Recommended to anyone who played the original.
This is a 1-1 copy of the original c64 game, as beautiful (ugly?) as the original - wouldn't have hurt to improve a few things here and there (like the audio compartment or the controls - the player hangs on stairs exactly like on the original game). Recommended only for true nostalgic gamers!
This was pretty much my childhood's Portal.
This game is a challenging, 2D puzzle game, that will hone your skills and ask for a lot of coordination throughout the 13 castles offered. I think the challenge still holds up until today.
The mechanics are easy to learn, yet hard to master, and for the time that it came out, a lot of thought went into making a huge variety of them(like sparks, mummies, Frankensteins!!!)
The port feels good as far as i can tell, you can even play with a controller.
Thank you for bringing this to steam <3
I spent hours and hours playing this game on my Commodore 64. I am thrilled to see it on Steam.
Great game 👍
