I'd recommend any Magic: The Gathering game you can play without internet.
Too bad they took them away from the consumers.
Please encourage your Wizards Of The Coast representative to talk about more single player, no internet required, Magic: The Gathering games.
You want some on your Steam Deck don't you???
In this game you can ride dragons, kill your friends and talk to god. It is what you have secretly wanted your whole life.
.
For some reason I really enjoyed playing the 4 player FFA with the timewarp deck. Kinda soothing.
“It’s time to Duel.”
It’s odd to review a game that is all at once outdated in it’s meta, unavailable on major storefronts, and contains content forever locked behind no longer existing DLC. But it’s on my backlog so here I go in spite of it all.
Magic DotP 2013 is a video game adaptation of the Magic The Gathering TCG built around the release of the M13 core set. As a digital adaptation of the card game, DotP 2013 is very successful. All mechanics act as expected, and more experienced players have options for holding priority, manually assigning damage and allowing for a fuller range of targeting options, while newer players can stick to simplified, more autonomous settings.
The largest feature missing from this game of battling custom built decks is… freedom to build custom decks. Players choose from a list of deck templates and are limited to up to 30 extra unlocked cards that they can swap from. I imagine this limitation was designed to create a more structured and abuse-resistant meta, but deck building is so core to what makes MtG fun that it really feels like a vorpal flaw. Digging the knife deeper is the conceit that you must unlock these 30 extra cards, one at a time, per deck, per duel win. With 10+ decks at 30 cards each, experimentation gets tossed aside in favor of grinding the same deck over and over to unlock its stronger cards. This, too, feels antithetical to MtG, which I always found to be a game that persuaded its players to try new things.
If there is one selling point for this version of DotP, it would be the Planechase format. A 4-player free-for-all whose gimmick relies on an ever changing ‘field effect’. The game starts with a Planechase card on the field that has a global effect on the board state. Players can spend resources to roll a die that can either do nothing, trigger a secondary effect, or flip over a new Planechase card for an entirely new set of effects. This adds an element of chance and spices things up, especially for a seasoned group of players looking to try something new.
With DotP 2013 being little more than a forgotten relic it’s hard to recommend. But outside of it’s limited deck building, it does right by its premise as a video adaptation of the decades old TCG.
6 out of 10. +1 if you are a new player looking to learn / +1 if you enjoy the thrill of the Planechase format.
tres fun
The godfather of all CCG
É o melhor jogo do mundo, que saudade de ter isso aqui nos consoles, chamar os amigos pra duelo, filosofar lendo as frases de cada carta
been playing magic for a long time and enjoy this game a lot!
+ it has a Planechase mode
+ graphics and animations are good for the time (2013)
- there is no deckbuilding, only adjusting pre-set decks
- you cannot add more lands or take them away, it is determined automaticly, with you ending up without mana 50% of the time
- card interaction bugs will ruin your game experience
Moddable.
A bite sized version of the full game.
Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is a digital version of the tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering (henceforth referred to as "MTG") which has you take on the role of a Planeswalker to duel other Planeswalkers, includes some minor deck-building elements, and does a good job of streamlining the flow of the game for new and casual players while improving on Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 ever so slightly. Since it is essentially a carbon-copy of the 2012 version, this review will be more of a comparison between the two versions rather than being a mostly copy-paste of my 2012 version. As such, you should read the Gameplay section of my review of the 2012 version here for context first.
Overall, I recommend it because MTG is simply a fun game to play and this does a great job of porting the game to a digital medium where it serves as a wonderful entry point for new players. Although it is far from perfect due to the negatives of its streamlining and the lack of cards compared to the total amount in the physical game, it is nevertheless good enough to satiate your need to play some solo games by yourself using low-power pre-constructed decks.

• The gameplay accurately ports the fantastic tabletop card game and streamlines the flow of the game while the deck-building is somewhat shallow due to the small and somewhat random assortment of cards which sometimes lack in synergy;
• The replay value is quite high due to the story campaigns, extra game modes in free play, puzzles, online multiplayer, and 10-21 decks to play with;
• The graphics are plain but the focus of the game revolves around its strategic gameplay, rather than trying to impress with its graphical prowess, while the visual effects for spells are underwhelming and range from little fiery explosions to scratch marks;
• The soundtrack is composed of ambient songs which are not stimulating or enthralling whatsoever but exude a foreboding and tense aura and act as decent background noise to let you focus on the strategic aspect of the game; and
• The game has no story and you simply duel the Planeswalkers for the sake of playing the card game but the loading screens provide tidbits of lore about the Planeswalkers and their relationships and conflicts with one another which is a nice touch that helps introduce you to the sprawling and immersive world-building of MTG and makes me lament the fact that we don't get to use them since they are extremely fun to play with.

The game has 25 achievements which should take 20-30 hours of casual play to acquire as most of them are relatively easy to get except for the puzzles which will require trial and error to stumble on the single solution for them; however, five require the Expansion DLC while two require online play which still appears to work, though there is a lack of active players so if you want to get all of the achievements then you should post on the discussion forums asking for help.
Gameplay
The gameplay is nearly exact copy of the 2012 version but with two new updates that address some issues I previously identified: the addition of a "Start" and "End" phase gives you a higher level of control and more easily allows you to play cards at the end of an opponent's turn while the addition of manual mana tapping also gives you a much finer level of control. Unfortunately, the interaction menu used when choosing targets is still cumbersome and highly redundant (especially when you have to use it multiple times in a row), waiting for multiple triggers to resolve is a time-consuming and tedious affair, and you still can't change your land distribution when deck-building.
The card-based menu is still horrendous due to its poor design which makes it an arduous chore to swap cards for different matchups or game modes to the point where I never bothered swapping cards based on my opponents' decks or if I was playing against multiple opponents, even if it meant that I had some useless cards in my deck. A very welcome addition would have been the ability to save multiple deck list presets for each deck so that you could quickly and easily choose a certain set of cards before each matchup. Keywords are still not explained in the deck-building menu which is irksome until you learn what they do.
The game has a total of 21 decks, five of which are available in the Expansion DLC and six of which are available in the three Deck Pack DLCs (Deck Pack 1, Deck Pack 2, and Deck Pack 3). A number of the decks have very niche sub-themes or weak synergies which make them feel very listless and casual especially compared to the more streamlined and focused decks. That being said, a total of 90 cards are available for each deck (or 100 if you unlock the promotional cards) which is a huge step up from the 2012 version which only has 80 cards total. Unfortunately, you only unlock one card per victory which means that it will take a very long time to unlock all 30 extra cards for all of the decks unless you purchase the Deck Key DLCs to skip the entire process.
The hardest difficulty setting feels artificial as the computer opponents more often than not have an answer (or more than one) to your threats which makes it feel like they cheat and this is especially true since they can see the order of your deck (or the next card at the very least). They also have more copies of cards than are available to you despite supposedly having the same deck as you which feels unfair and unpredictable since you can no longer rely on your knowledge of the deck list. Meanwhile, the easiest difficulty setting actually stacks your deck in a certain way, presumably to make it more forgiving for newer players, but this has the side effect of restricting you from seeing some cards altogether. The computer opponents also seem to be overwhelmed when there are too many cards on the field or too many options available to them which can lead to them making some very questionable and baffling decisions that feel like obvious misplays.
The game modes are the same except for Archenemy which has been replaced with Planechase, a novel mode where you compete in a free-for-all on various planes that each have one passive and one active global effect. Players can spend mana during their turn to roll a special six-sided "planar die", of which there can be three results: the "Planeswalk" outcome will change planes, the "Chaos" outcome will trigger the active effect, and the other four faces are blank and nothing happens.
Conclusion
Overall, I recommend this game despite its flaws because it does a great job of porting the game to a digital medium for a wider audience, it simplifies the flow of the game to make it more accessible, and it provides an excellent outlet to indulge any urges you might have to play some solo MTG with low-power pre-constructed decks.
viss ok
The best Magic the Gathering computer game ever. Better than the 2012 version, better than the 2014 version, and way better than MTG Arena.
I'm giving this a thumbs down because Wizards of the Coast brought down this game's servers, so you can't engage in multiplayer games anymore and you also can't redeem the various promo cards anymore.
I've played all manner of card games before but nothing makes me quite so quick to violence as a game of Magic the Gathering, which I unfortunately found out 'cause Xbox gave me it for free once. The only thing magical about having this game in my library is the fact I might be the only person in the hobby to be able to use a shower - my God you jits REEEEEEEK hardcore.
If you play White, you are infertile, stink, and are the fedora wearing neckbeard who thinks he can get with a woman by holding the door open enough times. Your armies are wank, you decks are better off being colourless and you should back down the manhole you crawled out of you little mutant.
If you play Blue you think you're the smartest man on the planet, your are incredibly smug and make foreboding comments any chance you can against your opponent. You spend so much time trying to play mind games with your opponent that you actually forget you're actively playing a game. I have never once seen a Blue player's "Grand Strategy" both play out and work. Nowadays you can tell someone is an absolute brainlet as they usually sport Rick and Morty merch or a greasy Big Bang Theory top that hasn't been washed in a few months, but back then you only needed to get hit with a counter spell to on turn two to know this man has more in common with cement than it does the rest of humanity, you stinky stinky abominations. Somehow White Deck users have more friends than you.
If you play Black, I legally can't insult you as that would be friendly fire. That said like 80% of you guys are absolute goths, lighten up jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez.
If you play Red, you are the neglected middle child with severe behaviourable problems, mostly just anger and daddy issues but sometimes you get the little nuggets of gold in there such as substance abuse or one of the million flavours of anxieties. Just like you, your whole deck plays a million miles a minute, you probably play Warhammer 40,000 as the World Eaters, Chaos Space Marines oooooooor you play Astra Militarum and draw the fun happy time german pinwheels on all your models. You want to kill the opponent so quickly you will walk into every possible trap, and get physically violent once you actually disconnect your whole deck from Gods Minecraft Sever. Also noticed if you play red you're usually good with cars so good on yous, at least you have a reason for stinking.
If you play Green, I hope both sides of your pillow are warm. Nah fr, these guys are usually pretty good opponents and have a decent variety in playstyles but it's mostly a slow build up that turns into just buffing your normal's and summoning giant creatures to ruin your day. Also the only hand I've seen loose consistently to Red though.
In conclusion your honour, please mandate all Magic the Gathering players a court ordered bath time or at least turn a blind eye to the boxing match I'm about to start mid-game if I so much as get the feeling I'm going to get counterspelled.
decent time killer still
This is was probably one of the single best ways to learn the basics of magic the gathering. The puzzles, campaigns, and deck building are all awesome, the stories and backgrounds using artwork from the game and story is powerful and evocative. For someone looking to get an idea of what magic can be, this whole game offers you an adventure and an experience with a beautiful, simple to grasp, and difficult to master period of the game. Twelve years later and I still highly recommend this specific version of the game, yet I imagine it may now be difficult to play. If you're looking to learn to play on paper, I recommend the Magic: The Gathering Foundations beginner box. If you'rel looking for a digital experience, Arena is your best bet. Magic is much more complicated now than it was twelve years ago, but the game is still beautiful, and the game is extremely immersive. The baggage and barrier of entry has increased, leaving Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 in my memory as one of the most straightforward ways to learn the game I experienced, alongside the Ninth edition two-player starter deck.
can't buy
Great game, why is this delisted? that's a terrible choice, anti consumer
not a cash grab like Magic Arena
Probably the best one
game doesn't even follow mtg deck rules
It was good while it lasted
Good
Junky premade decks and a painful deck manager screen that makes it tedious to make the minor changes you're allowed to make made this more painful than fun, even though I like Magic: The Gathering.
It was kinda fun at the time, worse than 2012 but fun
Bugs, bugs, bugs & no new content. How much money did you make from this?
Its classic.
Trash
If you don't feel like playing MtG Arena for some reason, this is a fun MtG experience for PC.
it is sad that it is no longer awailable
Timeless
yes
Great for learning the ropes before moving onto more modern titles.
Wow, you sure can't buy this anymore!
Very basic computerised Magic. AI makes some strange misplays and you can't do anything during upkeep.
I guess it's about in line with the Blood Bowl videogames in terms of teaching you the basics while being weird about it, but it doesn't matter what I rate it anymore so thumbs down it goes.
Great tool to learn and teach other the basics of MTG =)
Классическая и старая версия MtG в стиме, которая когда-то нас покинула. Есть занятные режимы игры, но в целом, как и 12-ая версия - это просто начало перед тем, как попробовать что-то покруче.
!
Not worth it at all
A horrifyingly poor rendition of an otherwise popular card game - the only saving grace is that Magic 2014 and 2015 are far, far worse by comparison. The franchise has moved on since then, but this game is as bad as I have always remembered it to be.
Pros:
- Planechase
- Interesting deck themes
Cons:
- Rigged mulligan system: there is some weird thing going on where you tend to consecutively draw an abnormally large number of either lands or spells in the first several turns, but much less often a balance between both. This can result in situations so bad that you actually start discarding cards before you even get a chance to play them, because you don't have enough mana, and so you subsequently watch yourself get destroyed by the AI's 1 or 2 power creatures. Alternatively, you end up with a lot of lands but still end up getting destroyed by said 1 or 2 power creatures, because you don't actually have any creatures of your own to counter them.
- Rigged AI and uncreative programming by the developers, leading to absurdly artificial and ridiculous levels of difficulty in lieu of actually smart AI design (such as situations where the AI so happens to always have the right card to counter you)
- Proof in point: Nicol Bolas actually has an illegal deck as per MTG rules. Yes, he is the final boss and of course boss fights should be the hardest, but that doesn't mean he's fun to play against. There is basically no way (unless you keep spamming restart duel and consistently draw good cards) for you to outplay the speed at which he puts down Mox cards and gets enough mana to wipe you out within the first 5-7 rounds or so of each match.
- UI BUGS. IN A CARD GAME?? HAVING UI BUGS IN A CARD GAME LITERALLY MAKES IT UNPLAYABLE. You may occasionally encounter situations where certain buttons or functions soft lock, causing you to be unable to play any cards or access the menu and forcing you to forcequit.
- In the iOS port of this game (yes, I played it many years ago), there was also another bug that caused the game to crash when you won a match and would have otherwise unlocked a card for your deck, causing that progress to not save at all. At least that bug doesn't seem to have carried over into the PC version.
the only good magic game
This game was amazing, you could two-headed giant setup with friends and play online. We had hours of fun! This was the ideal setup for MTG in my opinion. Too bad the support got discontinued for it.
Ναι
What a steaming pile of garbage this game is.
good game for beginners
Having never played a Collectable Card Game (CCG) of any type, real or digital, I thought I would try this out as some of my Steam friends were playing it back in 2012. I really enjoyed the experience, although despite playing close to 40 hours, I really only scratched the surface of this game.
Mais de 10 anos depois a série Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers continua muito divertido e desafiador!
Fun way to play some Magic without microtransactions
Na ty časy dobrý
Just legacy magic
This is exactly what I was looking for from a Magic the Gathering game. The single player story mode could be better but still interesting to progress. Also the puzzle "win in 1 turn" challenges are great fun.
Nothing will replace the table top game for me, but it's a nice itch to scratch when you want to play and all your friends are busy.
Prostě MAGIC
The best Duels of the Planeswalkers. Better than Duel of the Planeswalkers 2015. Although this game lack of deck customize but it has plenty of game mode and has many theme deck to play
From recently come back playing. This game is removed from store. Only who purchase before
removed can play. Cloud save not work. Offline play not saving unlock card progress. I am not recommend but pirating it is the only way to play this game.
Sehr Empfehlenswert
Flashback to the good old times...
It's worth the money and a lot easier to learn the game vs the physical card game because the software won't allow cheaters. I've played with a lot of those in my early magic years. lol. It's best to ignore guides and just build your own decks until you do not fail.
OK
i love it.
muy buen juego, recomendable para todos
tres bon jeux du genre....
Ashame they moved away from these and now are doing the whole 'Free to play' models..
For a itch scratching magic game it hits the spot. For a frustrating a.i. system it hits the spot. 2013 what can you say?
Sadly this was the last good MTG game and its not even for sale anymore. This is genuinely the best experience, more polished than MTG12, and leagues better than any of the micro transaction fest games after.
Famous MTG TC-CG Basic Edition Digital Version.
Pour apprendre à jouer à MAgic, c'est un bon début. après une 20h de jeu , on peut tenter les vrais jeux de cartes dans des social bar.
I haven't played in a while, but look back on this game with joy
The soundtrack is phenomenal, and the puzzles are great. It's a shame that it's missing a lot of quality of life features that exist in later Duels games, but it has some great spice. Example: Natural order for terastadon in the Green Elf Deck. Planeschase is also a huge upside. Only thing bad is again, the slowness of the older era of magic simulators.
the nostalgia is worth it
Ho giocato poche volte a magic dal vivo. Tuttavia ha gradito molto questa versione.
Bro I've been playing MTG since the 90's. It's so cool. You get so much ♥♥♥♥♥ bro I swear, especially if you play a Sliver deck bro. Trust me bro, once you start playing MTG all the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ will want you bro. Even your sister will be leaving a snail trail around the house because she'll sense the testosterone aura coming off you when you Planeswalk bro. Like I have to play strictly blue decks to counter all the stone-cold cudi that ♥♥♥♥ my way bro. Just play it bro and remember: ♥♥♥♥♥ is temporary but MTG is ETERNAL!

Has Planechase and 2HG. Archenemy is better than planechase, so 2012 is better than this one.
You can play magic without interacting with magic players, 10/10
Golden age before MTGA which sucks loads compared to this.
Plays like Magic in the early 2000's.
cards
It is history. A view before MTG was polluted with every form of secret lair and universes beyond. Servers go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
9/10
7 / 10
Good old mtg
QWERTY
Great for beginners to understand the game.
Fun game where you get to play older cards. Still holds up.
very fun, i like it from time tooo time
the best game on steam i still play it when i can
Eines der alten Spiele aus der Duels Serie.
Sicherlich nur für echte Magics Fans, dann aber ein schönes Stück Nostalgie
Fun take on Magic. Some limitations with cards as I believe this version was created before the online Magic game.
다시해도 재밌다. 랜덤만 있었으면 갓겜인데

better of the Magic games imo
play it... what else are you gonna do?
I had my fun for roughly 22 hours - I enjoyed the game while it lasted. Magic Arena is far superior though...
Fantastic
Decent
mtg is the best
