Have been a Magic player since my students taught me how to play when it first came out. I like all the online versions, but this one has some very interesting decks and cards. A real challenge! ABSmith aka Mme Defarge
What a shame you can't buy this title anymore. Maybe we'll get back to a place one day when you can just buy and own a mtg game.
lot's of fun!
Interface is so slowing the pace of everything down it is quite annoying.
Also the deckbuilder just doesnt give any good overview of the deck, even the older MtG games had a better interface for deck building. Sad
I played Magic the Gathering when Unlimited was released, and this game provides a wonderful distraction for Magic the Gathering players that like to jump in a duel once in a while.
This game is just a bookmark in my timeline of the time i smoked crack and it made this game fun.

Cool Game

Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 is a digital version of the tabletop card game Magic: The Gathering (henceforth referred to as "MTG") which has you take on the role of a Planeswalker to duel other Planeswalkers, includes some minor deck-building elements, and does a good job of streamlining the flow of the game for new and casual players; however, this over-simplification has some drawbacks which adversely affect more competitive players.
Overall, I recommend it because MTG is simply a fun game to play and this does a great job of porting the game to a digital medium where it serves as a wonderful entry point for new players. Although it is far from perfect due to the negatives of its streamlining and the lack of cards compared to the total amount in the physical game, it is nevertheless good enough to satiate your need to play some solo games by yourself using low-power pre-constructed decks.
S U M M A R Y
- The gameplay ports the fantastic tabletop card game and streamlines the flow of the game, somewhat to its detriment as it unfortunately cuts out a number of mechanics that are essential to higher-level play, and the "deck-building" is quite shallow due to the small and random assortment of cards which oftentimes lack in synergy;
- The replay value is quite high due to the story campaigns, extra game modes in free play, puzzles, online multiplayer, and 19 decks to play with (assuming that you have all of the DLCs);
- The graphics are plain but the focus of the game revolves around its strategic gameplay rather than trying to impress with its graphical prowess while the visual effects for spells are underwhelming and range from little fiery explosions to scratch marks;
- The soundtrack is composed of ambient songs which are not stimulating or enthralling whatsoever but exude a foreboding and tense aura and act as decent background noise to let you focus on the strategic aspect of the game with each Planeswalker having their own unique theme that sound very similar to one another due to their demure nature;
- The game has no story as you simply duel the Planeswalkers for the sake of playing the card game but the loading screens provide tidbits of lore about the Planeswalkers and their relationships and conflicts with one another which is a nice touch that helps introduce you to the sprawling and immersive world-building of MTG; and
- Forest's Fury, the Treefolk deck in the Deck Pack 2 DLC, is bugged and you cannot permanently unlock the additional cards because your unlock progress is reset every time you quit the game.

The game has 26 achievements which should take 20-30 hours to acquire as most of them are relatively easy to get except for the puzzles which will require much trial and error to stumble on the single solution for them. Most will be acquired throughout casual play but nine of them require the Magic: The Gathering 2012 - Expansion DLC as well as online play which still appears to work, though there is a lack of active players so if you want to get all of the achievements then you should post on the discussion forums asking for help.
Gameplay
The gameplay is fantastic as it ports the tabletop version almost exactly but streamlines the flow of the game which is helpful for introducing the game to new players and makes it more accessible for casual players who might not be able to remember all of the rules and finer intricacies of the game. That being said, this process has its faults as it ends up over-simplifying things a little too much which is detrimental for competitive players who are looking to eke out every advantage that they can.
For example, the game automatically manages which lands are tapped for mana when casting spells which is frustrating for multi-color decks since the game uses your different lands equally even if you have a card in your hand or an ability on a creature that requires a certain color of mana. Additionally, it is almost impossible to activate something at the end of an opponent's turn (after they have played all of their cards) because there is no "end step" for you to do so. Instead, the final phase of a turn is the "second main phase" and the computer will always be able to respond to you doing something close to the end of their turn. Both of these are major oversights and the game would have benefited from the ability to have these as options that could be toggled on or off to tailor the experience to your liking.
The game features a number of other game modes to keep the gameplay varied and fresh:
- 2vs2, or Two-Headed Giant, where you and your teammate share a life pool and collectively block but, unfortunately, the streamlining prevents you from targeting a specific opponent which renders some cards useless (such as certain discard or sacrifice effects) since you always target the player opposite of you;
- 3vs1, or Archenemy, where you team up with two others to face one opponent who gains a boon at the start of each of their turns and has a higher life total;
- 1vs3, or Archenemy, where you play as the singular opponent but this is only available if you have the Expansion DLC;
- Free-for-all with three or four players;
- Online play for all of the above game modes; and
- Puzzles which require you to figure out the solution with the limited tools at your disposal.
The game has 19 decks, each of which has 60 cards to start with and 20 more that you can unlock as you win duels with that deck, but 9 of these require the three Deck Pack DLCs (Deck Pack 1, Deck Pack 2, and Deck Pack 3) as well as the Expansion DLC. A majority of the non-tribal decks (those which aren't built around a specific creature type such as elves, vampires, zombies, etc) have a seemingly random spattering of cards and mechanics that lack synergy and feel aimless and unoptimized as a result. Many have an obvious theme but simply don't have the tools to properly execute their plan which is a shame because the concepts behind them are novel and can be fun whenever they are rarely successful.
The "deck-building" aspect of the game is very minimalistic as you only have an extra 20 cards that you can include in place of (or in addition to) the 60 base cards so there isn't much variation within a deck, especially if your aim is to optimize it or focus on a certain mechanic. Additionally, the game does not allow you to adjust your land distribution which is another annoying (albeit minor) aspect that is a result of the over-simplification and streamlining of the rules.
The user interface for editing decks is terrible as the mouse cursor does not register a click where it is pointing and the game has trouble switching between keyboard and mouse inputs, both of which are very irksome. Meanwhile, keywords for various cards aren't explained in the deck-building menu and if you want to look them up then you either have to do so on an outside source or the glossary which is located in a completely different section of the main menu and switching back and forth is extremely cumbersome.
Conclusion
Overall, I recommend this game despite its flaws because it does a great job of porting the game to a digital medium for a wider audience, it simplifies the flow of the game to make it more accessible, and it provides an excellent outlet to indulge any urges you might have to play some solo MTG with low-power pre-constructed decks.
Let me tell you about Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. It’s one of those games that’s technically still around (if you bought it back in the day), but good luck finding it if you didn’t—it’s no longer available for purchase on Steam. And that’s a shame because this game was an absolute gateway into Magic: The Gathering, wrapped up in a neat little digital package.
The gameplay was its biggest draw. You weren’t thrown into the deep end with deck-building or forced to buy card packs. Instead, you got preconstructed decks, each with its own flavor and strategy. It was perfect for newcomers who wanted to learn without getting overwhelmed and for veterans who just wanted to sit back and enjoy some streamlined battles.
The campaign gave you a solid progression system, challenging you with AI opponents that represented Magic’s iconic planeswalkers. And let’s not forget those puzzles. They weren’t just “win this match” scenarios; they were bite-sized brain teasers that tested how well you really understood the game’s mechanics. Solving them felt like a mini-victory every time.
Visually, it wasn’t flashy by today’s standards, but it had just enough flair to keep you immersed. The card art was always the star, as it should be. Spell effects were simple but satisfying, and the battlefield layout kept everything clean and easy to follow.
Multiplayer, though—that’s where this game really shined. Archenemy mode was a fan favorite, letting three players team up to take down an overpowered AI opponent. It was a blast, especially with friends. And while the PvP aspect wasn’t as deep as you’d get with physical Magic or something like MTG Arena, it was more than enough to keep things interesting.
Now, speaking of MTG Arena—yes, it’s on Steam now, and it’s great in its own right. But let’s be real: it’s not Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. Arena is all about competitive ladder climbing and card collecting, while Duels focused on making Magic accessible and fun without the grind. No campaign, no Archenemy, just straight-up one-on-one battles. That’s fine, but it doesn’t scratch the same itch.
If you were lucky enough to buy Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 before it disappeared, you can still download and play it today. And honestly, it holds up. It’s a reminder of a simpler time in digital Magic—a time when you didn’t need a credit card or hours of research to enjoy a game of cards. And yes, I know they had DLC content available to buy content and decks.
So yeah, this game might be off the market, but for those of us who played it, it’s a classic. And for anyone looking for something similar, MTG Arena is worth a look—but don’t expect it to capture the same magic (pun intended).
SGOOD
Decent DotP, but missing some of the quality of life improvements from later entries.
For all its flaws, it's still better than the manipulative microtransaction hell digital mtg has become lately.
Don't get it. Its out dated to real magic and worst of all, if you face computer even your own teammate npc's will screw you over. I had 3 games in a row I could win but the bots threw the game.
The game "saves" and "updates" the cloud, but no progress is actually saved or made any longer.
Waste of time, great game, but just a waste at this point.
nice game
wizards of wokeisim.
A great game based on the legendary collectors card game series. I have had many great games both in single player and online.
Unfortunately you can't grab it on steam anymore...
yay
it is good

The cards; they're magic D:
Game changes, every game. Never gets old.
This is exactly what I was looking for from a Magic the Gathering game. The single player story mode could be better but still interesting to progress. Also the puzzle "win in 1 turn" challenges are great fun.
there are good elements about this game that i will list,
if you want to learn the mechanics of the game of magic, this will help you learn about some of the rules timing and mechanics.
it has a two headed giant function
it has a arch enemy option for enhanced game play
it has some deck variety
it has some interesting puzzles and challenges
it features a lot of cards from a lot of dated cards
it does have customised game play wherein if you want to play against x deck, you can
the only elements about this engine, they do not really allow you to 'build a deck' only optimise a pre construct...which isn't a big offset but does limit what you can do creatively
the other thing is they do not deal with plainswalker cards and or the legend rule proper(legend rulew is a dated version of...but again, not a huge offset)
An entertaining and challenging card game.
Meh, it's alright with the prebuilts but not worth the time.
intellectual game :3
Game modes like Two Headed Giant and a great variety of decks with legacy feel to them made this a fantastic MTG game
intellectual game. 10/10
while this version doesn't include recent cards or mechanics, it has lots of fun for the sets it includes
Magic:The Gathering was a card game. I discovered this game when they realeased the PC game, in 1997.
At that point, MTG was an incredible universe, perfectly balanced, incredible artwork, etc. etc. etc.
12/10. Everyone love it, and everyone want to have the cards.
They sold millions.
BUT.... when everyone had his deck, the creators fell in a CHEAP TRICK to keep selling
they strart releasing OVER-POWERED cards.
Players dont realized they have 2 choices:
(1) To ban all the new cards, and keep playing a balanced game.
(2) To buy the OVER POWERED CARDS and win the battles.
Many buyers made the wrong choice, and the producers keep selling his OVER POWERED cards.
And when both players already had this ridiculous OP cards, Wizards of the Dollar keep realeasing more, more and more Super Crap.
Now magic its a crap.
im not sure if they even lost the rights on the original cards.
But they destroyed one of the most incredible games I ever seen.
Stay out of this dishonored junk.
Great game ! but can't make homemade deck
the best version of magic the gathering still on steam
parfait pour se détendre
Has Archenemy and 2HG. This series is better then modern M:tG and it's a damn shame that they discontinued it and removed this one from sale. Still playing in 2022, 10 years after release.
You can play magic without interacting with magic players, 10/10
heartthzone but more money not for me blizzard not for me scammers!
Pretty decent
good
Best way to play Magic on a computer, hands-down.
Famoso jogo de RPG ! Nostalgia pura, melhor de todos !!
Archenemy mode is fun and challenging. Highly recommended.
Pending actual review, test entry.

You can't create a custom deck, all you can do is modify pre-existing ones.
The AI always has the perfect card for the situation while you will rarely draw something useful.
The game sometimes locks up for several minutes while the AI has to load things, but that might just be the age of the game with the modern hardware.
Better than nothing if you don't own any Magic The Gathering cards in real life, otherwise you're better off just dueling yourself with your own cards.
iT IS A FUN GAME EVEN THOUGH IT IS NOT A NEW GAME
Once upon a time, this game was just M:tG, Duels of the Planeswalkers.
It's a multiplayer focused iteration of the CCG with interesting game modes. It solves the issue of inconsistent tools based on investment by having each player pick a "toolbox" deck with specific cards within, and tweak it to their tastes from there, putting everyone on a theoretically even playing field, while allowing for a wide variety of decks, counters, and playstyles.
They then had a lucrative and steady stream of DLC decks to further expand this experience. They could have polished up the interface, netcode, and followed this model into perpetuity.
Instead, they reset the collection, and as a result game diversity in strategy and deck choices, into yearly iterations that were not backwards compatible with extant content.
They never bothered with the bugs or quirks in the interface.
They did not want money; they wanted ALL of the money. They sabotaged the gamer base to try to get it.
They killed the series entirely. Very sad footnote; likely reflective of many very sad futures.
Limited card pool/decks make the base game blah. When you NEED and expansion/boosters before your game is fun it's a failure.
i think my dad played this on my account would recommend
Remember when games were about punching money out of you on top of what you already paid for it?
This is what this was.
fun
I love gathering cards and paying for one time price to use them all. Much less expensive to try out a set for 20 dollars vs 60 for one deck.
Enjoyable.
Przyzwoita adaptacja gry karcianej ,,Magic: The Gathering'' z angażującą kampanią.
doesn't play well
Good game for fans of old-style Magic. It's also good for practice for when you play IRL, with real cards against seasoned players.
very good you should definetely buy this in 2021
I miss playable Arch Enemy mode.
Just play magic arena. I played this game a lot back when it was the main magic video game but nowadays you should really just play magic arena
Distortion animation sucks.
The mouse controls in the main menu are absolute trash.
There are plenty of card games out there now that actually let you build a deck, instead of merely letting you make minor edits to one, as this game does.
Wizards Of The Coast has turned into a paedophile ring. Don't support them.
Don't support them for what they did to The Quartering.
Just let them die.
They got woke, they deserve to go broke.
Love Magic the gathering
pretty solid magic game. has nice selection of cards you can unlock by playing different decks and games
I've been enjoying this game for years. I prefer teaming with friends or playing solitaire.
Jeux très addictif
Masterpiece of a game just needs more decks. New mobile platform is amazing
Dunno about writing a review for a game that is no longer sold, but I have a few thoughts...
This game reminds me greatly of MtG back in the 90s where people would have their serious decks - and then they would have their theme decks. This game is like playing theme decks against one another - the cards are not optimal and the choices might make you scratch your head, but everything fits the theme quite well. The better decks are fun to play and the painfully bad decks are difficult to endure.
It does scratch the Magic itch, but not very deeply. It is nice to go to when something like a D&D expansion reminds me that I once played MtG.

Best Magic The Gathering game out here. wish online wasnt dead
If you like MTG, you will like this one.
Tip top!
it is 2020
and I am still playing this version of duels of the planeswalker
So today you can't download and buy the full game. Magic is forcing the new versions. I bought this game when it came out and just wanted to play with some friends in 2020 in this game mode. They are new players and this is a great teaching tool. The new modes of magic are harder for beginners to learn with it's cliff of a learning curve.
Great game and better than the other MTG games (2013,14&15) Plenty of decks to customise and a decent scaling campaign to learn and progress. Shame the base game and DLC is never included in steam sales.
No online community in 2020 but that's understandable for an 8 year old game. Would love a 2020 version just like this.
Game is lackluster and very poor in content. But offers some fun for a limited numer of hours.
Love this game
Bugs out with any sort of controller plugged in. I'm not removing my 5+ flight sim controls just so this buggy game will work. Devs fix the stuff QA tells you about; did no one think people would use controllers for their pc games?
Magic'a!
Magic: The Gathering Arena
PROS:
A big criticism when this series was released was the inability to create decks from scratch. You could only do that in the In-App-Purchase heavy and notoriously crash prone Magic Online, which had a very dated looking interface, even in 2012. Now we have MTG Arena, which has a robust deck builder and looks beautiful, so players aren't really clamoring for that as much as they were in 2012. What you do get in this game is a deck for each of the main Planeswalker characters, consisting mostly of cards from old core sets. (Though Planeswalker cards are strangely absent. )
The game does a poor job conveying the story of MTG or introducing any of the characters, just like the paper TCG. The campaign consists of a gauntlet of character decks you must face leading up to Karn as the final deck to beat. There are 15 puzzle challenges you can attempt, which place you in lethal scenarios in which you must play your cards as optimally as possible to survive the turn. As you rack up wins, you will unlock more cards that are specific to that deck. Unlocking them all is key for when you're ready to take on the Revenge campaign, which is the game's Hard Mode gauntlet with better opponent decks. Unfortunately, unlocking all the cards for a single deck is tedious work, and the devs knew this, because you are given the option to just buy the unlocked cards for $10 in the Steam store. (As well as the purely cosmetic foil deck conversion, so all your digital cards are shiny and expensive looking.) You'll also find 9 DLC decks, including extra campaign missions for Ajani, Liliana, and Ral Zarek who were absent from the base game.
There's a separate campaign for the Archenemy format, which is included, though I'm not a fan of the format and I'll admit I skipped it.
The DOTP series does a pretty good job at replicating tabletop Magic and is overall a fun casual deck gauntlet experience. Some story would've been nice in the campaign, though. The Revenge campaign serves as good endgame content for those patient enough to unlock the more powerful cards, but I didn't find much incentive to continue upgrading the decks after getting the win achievement for each character.
gosto demais
Great game to learn how to play.
It's MTG on the PC. Yeah there's no deckbuilding per-say, but the multiplayer was a ton of fun just knowing what to expect from your opponents decks.
The game is fun. It is an alright substitute for the original card game. I just wish it allowed you to build your deck instead of limiting you to specific cards.
Not a replacement for the real tabletop card game but pretty good.
Garbage UI. Slow to play and nothing like the original game.
preety nice
campaign is small and it's from 2012, so online isn't an option
Best of the MTG games!
