So much fun. The game I wish I had when I was a kid.
You can manipulate the settings and make it challenging. Either side can win easily if you buy small cav units and use them to confuse the AI. Deep raids make armies chase them everywhere as you build the weapon inventory. Invest in Miss rifles, Maynards and the 3" cannons. That order. Fill out your rifles and cannons with confiscated weapons. That worst thing is the time it takes to get weapons. The attributes for units don't grow fast enough for anyone except individual army cmdrs. I have never seen a div cmdr get an attribute, even in an army with 15 battles under their belt. Brigades can be elite, but have only one attribute. Being economically frugal, and spending like a drunken sailor have zero impact on your credit rating. It will fall below B by 1863, either side, no matter what you do.
Just finished my first campaign, playing as the Union. No idea how the economy works(!) so tried to auto-manage everything; but I really like the period 'paper maps' used in the battles, the fog of war forcing you to deploy cavalry in their historical role for scouting, etc. Frustrating at times to get division and higher level formations to use the correct formation, but generally great fun. As the Union, I had to sack McClellan as he was bloody slow and kept retreating in face of weaker forces, so pretty historical! Got the game on sale, and recommended at that price.
I charge a artillery unit with 24 guys and 0 guns with my 160 calvary. Lose 20 guys and get routed. Devs please fix your game.
This game with Whiskey and Lemons is fun but the Ai needs a tweak bigtime as there are plenty of fights I've lost that I could win given AI support or even just them holding a spot (like river crossings) there are also many instances of when my army routes the AI just sits them in a field with no supplies so we just attrition for no reason.
I stay up late late playing this. I got whiskey and lemons. So far in different plays I have lost a leg and an arm, same guy, Two more limbs and you could have thrown him in the water and called him Bob. This new guy got shot in the groin early on and is listed as impotent. I will get a fine nickname out of that I'm sure. Is it perfect, no. I know what two or three of but auto recruit buttons are but not all.
Your men when you first start will rout/run away at the slightest thing. Keep them behind a little and close to other units. I keep messing that up. I haven't played the regular game so I can't say anything about that. Whiskey and Lemons is kind of a role play but not that involved. The problem with moving them like that is the AI don't do much sometimes so you are back there doing nothing. Theirs mods that work on the AI but they are not really for Whiskey and Lemons. Despite that I still love it.
Full fledged game that punches way above it weight class. Has too much depth for me to be honest.
A bit daunting at first, but the use of influence and poltics to rise through the ranks (in Whiskey and Lemons) is indicative of the age...

The reason to get this game is Whiskey and Lemons. That is the be all and end all. But its worth it for that and that alone.
If you want to buy the base game, you can. But know there are often better or at least far less buggy games that can do the same. Personally if it was only the base game. I wouldnt have bothered.
This is the only game (with W+L) that lets you RPG your way from brand new officer who can barely do as you are told (and not a lot more) , with a single regiment all the way to running an entire army and dictating the conduct of the entire war. Its something Ive never seen and never played until now.
Highly recommended. But only if you play it Whiskey and Lemons style.

In my opinion, it is the best American Civil War Online Strategy game available at the moment. It allows the player to refight the entire war from 1861 to 1865 as either the North or the South and control every aspect of the conflict including tactical control of the battles that occur.

It has a very steep learning curve and several notable issues, but generally its flaws are more than compensated for by its comprehensiveness and flexibility, and many can be resolved or minimised by personal editing of the game settings. e.g. if you don't like something then modify it, or turn it off.

I have had over 1,100 hours of enjoyment out of this game and paid less than £20 for it. So, at £15.37 it's very good value for money.

Personally, I have avoided buying the 'Whiskey & Lemons DLC' mainly because I'm not interested in roleplaying a junior officer in one of the armies. There are other games for that sort of thing. But also because I gather a lot of the issues the game has are caused by that DLC.

The game has a lot of bugs and at times it can get a little boring. However, I always have a lot of fun and it is worth it. The game doesn't do a great job showing you how to do everything, but once you figure it out it is great.
