Finally picked up both this game and Tangle Tower after having played through Crow Country back in 2024, and I have to say this was well worth the purchase! The writing is very charming and while I think I prefer the artstyle the later games in this series, the art really grew on me during my playthough, especially with how lively the character animation is. I also had no particular issues other than the cutscenes being a bit louder than the rest of the game. This game is well worth your time, and is also very often dirt cheap, so I recommend picking it up!

Coming from playing (and falling in love with) Tangle Tower, and in anticipation for The Mermaid Mask, I played the original Detective Grimoire for the first time!

There's something so heartwarming about seeing this series' origins. It makes me so jazzed to have played the second game first and to see the foreshadowing of characters and even to the plot of the second game hinted within the first. This game, while over 10 years old at the time of writing this (obligatory "wow, I feel old" mention), still oozes the charm and wit that is turned up tenfold in the second game.

I admit, I fumbled around with certain mechanics: I didn't even realize the suspicion mechanic was a thing until I was checking all my achievements before I finished the game; and I hardly ever used the move button and preferred to fast travel from the map, thus my interactions with the Little Girl were kind of by chance and misclick.
Still, this game (and this is true of the others, too) always gives you the option to turn back to complete what you want before you progress the story past the point of no return, which I always appreciate in games in general.
Of course, I also have hindsight to know that any mechanics I tripped over are refined by now.

I'm really glad I took the time to play this game.
While I know each of these games can be played as standalone games without missing any vital story or character elements, I just love seeing the game improve and everything becoming more and more refined.
Even though this game in particular is old, it's still very refined, especially for its time! I have no doubt that I would have been equally as big of a fan had I played this game when it came out.

I played Tangle Tower first bc I didn't know of this game's existence since recently and now that I've played it, all the story makes a lil more sense.
Achievements are not difficult to obtain but I'm pretty confused by the fact that I've played for 2.4h and I still have 2 more card drops to collect?! Kinda weird o.O

I ended up playing this AFTER Tangle Tower because I didn't know it was a series. I definitely enjoyed Tangle Tower a bit more than this one, but it was a solid point-and-click adventure, and the voice acting was as good in this one as it is in the sequel.
While it was fun seeing things that I know would be relevant for the next game, I am not sure how this game leads to Tangle Tower naturally. There are quite a few parts that don't seem to match - it almost feels like there is something missing, almost like there should be a game between Secret of the Swamp and Tangle Tower...

Detective Grimoire is a charming little mystery game with a lot of personality. The detective part is pretty easy, but I still enjoyed walking around, collecting clues, talking to all the characters and putting everything together. The story is cute and fits the quirky style of the game really well. You don’t really have to collect all the notes and clues to finish the game, but I think you’d miss a lot if you only go through the dialogs needed to complete it

I played Tangle Tower first, they've made a lot of improvements since this game, but I think it's still worthwhile to play if you're a fan of Detective Grimoire. Very short game though, so factor that into your purchase decision!

I played the old flash Detective Grimoire a fair bit, and this is a really solid sequel to that game. Little more cartoony, a more interesting setting, solid voice acting.

The main mystery doesn’t take much detective work to solve beyond ‘click on suspicious images’ and ‘talk to everyone about everything’, and the puzzles were all fairly simple, but it was an enjoyable time.

I first played the sequel and liked it so much I wanted to see the origin story as well. I loved it! As it is the first game of the series, it is made with less budged but they really made the most of it. The story and the characters are written so fun and lovingly, that the occasional bad audio quality does not matter at all. The voice acting is great as well. I'm glad they are making more!!

Detective Grimoire es una experiencia point and click donde tendremos que investigar un misterioso asesinato que ha tenido lugar en una pequeña atracción turística, Boggy’s Bog, una región pantanosa donde presuntamente habita una criatura monstruosa. La víctima no es otra que el señor Remington, el propietario del parque temático, y todas las pruebas del crimen apuntan a la misteriosa criatura del pantano, algo bastante intrigante ya que esta no ha sido avistada desde hace más de 60 años. Toca ponerse manos a la obra, investigar minuciosamente cada rincón del pantano, interrogar a todos los posibles testigos y esclarecer el misterio que gira entorno al asesinato.

[h2]Jugabilidad / Apartado técnico[/h2]
Tras la introducción del caso, nos encontraremos con un point and click de manual, donde tendremos libertad para explorar los distintos escenarios que componen el pantano y el parque temático donde ha tenido lugar el crimen. En cada zona tendremos que observar minuciosamente el entorno, recogiendo pruebas y anotando todo aquello que pueda ser relevante para el caso. Encontraremos diferentes personajes a los que interrogar, recabando información que podremos etiquetar como importante o no. A cada personaje podremos mostrarle las diferentes pruebas que vayamos encontrando, descubriendo así nuevas interacciones e información útil. Los puzles y minijuegos serán una parte fundamental de la experiencia, y en la mayoría de ellos tendremos que ordenar frases que tengan sentido o responder adecuadamente al relato cronológico de los hechos para poder avanzar en la historia. Una vez hayamos recogido toda la información del caso tendremos que tratar de resolverlo y buscar un culpable que concuerde con la investigación que hemos llevado a cabo.

Detective Grimoire es un juego de investigación detectivesca bastante interesante, ambicioso en ciertos aspectos, pero breve y conciso en duración y contenido. El estilo point and click le sienta muy bien a este tipo de juegos y la posibilidad de ir recabando pruebas, interrogar personajes y resolver poco a poco el caso está bien planteado. El juego no está traducido al español, lo cual puede suponer un problema para muchos jugadores, ya que tendremos que leer bastante y mantener varias conversaciones. Considero que utiliza un inglés bastante sencillo y comprensible, pero es importante tener en cuenta este detalle antes de comprarlo. El estilo de algunos puzles no ha terminado de convencerme, ya que tener que ordenar frases para que cobren sentido me ha recordado a un examen de idiomas más que a un videojuego de detectives. En general creo que es un juego decente para echar el rato, con un estilo gráfico y animaciones bien hechas, una historia sencilla y algo predecible y unas mecánicas de investigación interesantes. Una buena opción para limpiar el paladar entre juegos más complejos.
Por último, quería mencionar que Detective Grimoire: Secret of the Swamp ha sido el primer juego de la saga publicado en Steam, pero realmente se trata del segundo, ya que el primero fue publicado en 2007 en Armor Games y ha sido etiquetado por uno de sus desarrolladores como un prototipo irrelevante para la saga.

Another great game by SFB Games! This one was released before Tangle Tower, and it was fun to see how Grimoire and Sally met...ngl took me way too long to notice it was her.
Tangle Tower was my favourite, but this was still a lot of fun. I have a chronic illness, so I really appreciate shorter games, especially point and click games.
Again, the art was so good, it just scratched an itch. It was a full cast narration for the characters, and although we don't really get to know them as much as the Tangle Tower characters, it was still fun. For example, the director and camera man just felt like they were kind of just...there. But I suppose the point is to have a group of suspects. The puzzles in this one were a lot easier, but it was the first game, so I can't fault it really. I'm comparing Tangle Towers because I played them in the wrong order, and that's on me.
Overall, I really recommend these games and I'm very excited for the third one to release this year! I really hope they do more.

Really good puzzle game and its nice that it has a voice-over for the characters. It sounded towards the end that there would be a sequel to the story. I realized I played Tangle tower about 2,5 years ago when I looked it up. From what I remember that game was also great, even better than this one. But its a standalone story and not a continuation of this one.

I also found there is an upcoming game for 2026, so I will definitely whitelist that one.

I loved this game so much! I had already played the sequel, Tangle Tower, before I played this game, and while the sequel is a lot smoother and polished in terms of mechanics and game design, I still really enjoyed playing this game. It didn't take me very long to finish it, or to get all the achievements, so if you're looking for a nice, short little mystery game with some pretty interesting lore then this is great. I loved the little hints and easter eggs in this game which allude to the sequel, definitely a cool experience if you've already played Tangle Tower, but even if you haven't I still recommend this game :)

Now imagine if Ace Attorney had a baby with your average, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, Newgrounds parody humor, while the most important of the OneyPlays cast watched from the cuck chair: a main character who looks like Lyle; Tomar, of course, voicing half of the characters, and that one guy who used to do some cool things, I'm pretty sure. Maybe he co-hosted a gaming channel with the rich blacks statistics guy? Idk.

Found it and played it after completing my Tangle Tower gameplay. Despite the art being different, it didn't feel off. Only I feel Sally looks better in the redesign.
I think I would've understood better some things from Tangle Tower if I had already played this one, but this one wasn't on NSwitch, so I wouldn't know.
The mystery was quite obvious right from the start (at least to me) but it was fun anyway, the characters are charming and unique, and you still wanna investigate to make sure it isn't just obvious because it is a trap to make you not realize the actual truth lol

a short but fantastic detective game it is really well written and is a fantastic game. the charecters have so much personality the art is as per usual with this dev stellar. the writing is genuinly peak and the murder is unique. i do think tangle tower is a slightly better game do to its murder feeling more complex and the charecters feeling very invested in the victim. which is honestly interesting returning to this game afterward because in this game nobody loves the victim and it makes a completly differnt tonal shift if you havent played grimore give it a shot you will not be disapointed

The only other thing I'd played from these devs is Crow Country, a phenomenal game, and this is not to point-and-clicks or mystery games what that is to survival horror, but that was a made with a decade more experience, and this still shines on its own merits.

Its gameplay is pretty simple point and click, and nods to Layton, a clear inspiration, but has far fewer puzzles. I did like that its few puzzles were physics based for the most part, a unique feature for this style of game. The mystery was alright, you are able to figure it out well before the end if you're paying attention, and it doesn't do the best job at providing motives to turn "people in the vicinity of the crime scene" into "suspects".

But the game has STYLE. In its animations, primarily, but being fully voiced certainly helps. The character designs are so, for lack of a more apt word, shaped, with unique imagery for every one that pops but also feels cohesive in its cartoon aesthetic. The animations are smooth and economical, and the voice cast does good work, with none of them ever making me go "that's the take we're going with?", which games of much larger budget often prompt me to do often.

The game side of things is alright, but having played a later work by this dev, I'm excited to see what result 5 more years produces when I play Tangle Tower.

Alright, playing this was my mistake. I didn’t know the series beforehand. I just saw a detective-style game and went in with the wrong expectations.

The game is very light. You’re here mainly for the character interactions, with only some very gentle detective work. You’re never going to be pulling your hair out trying to solve a puzzle.

It’s well suited for a younger audience, or for anyone who wants a low-difficulty game they can relax with and get a few laughs from.

Detective Grimoire nos presenta un asesinato inusual donde el principal sospechoso es, nada más y nada menos, que una criatura mitológica. Lo que al inicio parece una premisa absurda, esconde mucho trasfondo detrás. Poco a poco, iremos desentrañando los secretos y el oscuro pasado de este misterioso pantano.

Nos encontramos ante una jugabilidad "point and click". La mecánica principal consiste en interactuar con diferentes zonas de la pantalla para obtener pistas, interrogar sospechosos y conectar evidencias.

Las deducciones no son difíciles de obtener, lo que le da una sensación de "juego ligero".

Si vienes buscando un desafío mental al nivel de [i]The Case of the Golden Idol[/i] o [i]Return of the Obra Dinn[/i], aquí no lo encontrarás. Prácticamente puedes equivocarte las veces que quieras sin penalización real, ya que el sistema te empuja a elegir las opciones correctas para progresar.

Fun, short detective game. Booted it up when I found out it was the 2nd game in the Detective Grimoire lineup (the first one is a flash game not available on Steam). I enjoyed it. Though the amount of icons were initially overwhelming, it made keeping track of all the evidence and suspects easy.

Was already a fan of this series because of Tangle Tower but while I would say that this was inferior in certain aspects to the aforementioned sequel I still really enjoyed it to the point I essentially 100%ed it in one and a half sitting, however (on steam deck, dunno if this is also on other systems) I had some bad issues with performance where it would dip into single digits in one singular at times or during dialogue where it would go under 20 fps.

My first introduction to Grimoire was in Tangle Tower on my Playstation because I didn't realize there was a previous game. Luckily, I was able to find and experience it here on steam. The overall game is very enjoyable. The characters are great, the art design in my opinion is well done, the story was engaging and the pace didn't feel too fast or too slow, and I love that this little game has voice acting to bring more of the characters personalities to light. I was a little spoiled by the puzzles in Tangle Tower but the ones in this one were still very fun to figure out. If you are looking for a nice detective game with good visuals, fun characters in both personality and design, puzzles to figure out, and a murder to solve then Detective Grimoire is a great game to add to your list to play.

The mystery central to the game isn't the best mystery ever conceived, and the UI has some issues. But that doesn't matter. What matters is how delightfully-presented the whole thing is. Full voice acting, fantastic 2D animation, quirky characters, and just plain fun.

Another reason to play: The sequel, Tangle Tower, *does* have a fantastic mystery, and this game gives you more context for that game's story!

A quirky detective game, Detective Grimoire follows the titular sleuth as he investigates a mysterious murder in an unlikely swamp-based attraction park. As first games go, it's a strong one - it's no Layton, but it's got a charm all of its own that I really enjoyed.

The absurdly-named Grimoire is our protagonist here, and he's let loose in the confines of Boggy's Bog on the trail of who - or what - murdered the park's proprietor. It's pinned on the local eponymous cryptid, but Grimoire's a logical sort and it soon emerges that one of the myriad suspicious characters hanging around almost definitely is our culprit. I quite like Grimoire in this one; he's not as goofy as he'll become in the sequel, and there's something to be said for a game where the detective often appears to be on the same page as the player, rather than slightly behind or ahead.

The game plays out largely as a straightforward point-and-click, with clues to be found either in the environment or eked out of the NPCs through dialogue. Central to the game is a deduction mechanic where you can put thoughts and clues together to form a coherent explanation of events, which I enjoy - it's not always obvious, but it's never overwhelming. Less impressive are the other puzzles in the game, which almost always trend towards being tedious, repetitive or too simple.

This game is, somehow, more than the sum of its parts, in a way I can't really justify. I have basically only complaints, but also I came away from it feeling like I enjoyed it?

Many years ago, on this very blog, I reviewed a silly and fun arcade game called Haunt the House -- the review still exists on Steam. Imagine my surprise when I saw this was the next game from that developer, who I'd not followed in the interim. What this game shares with Haunt the House is its colorful, high-contrast and distinctive visual style, which is its best feature. I just really enjoyed the look of it, and can't really underestimate how much that affected my overall impression.

Because the game was... flawed. The biggest problem was the UI, which was labyrinthine, unintuitive, and sometimes downright unintelligible. I get that you could hide the sidebars, but some of the info was useful, there was just so, so much, more than anyone could ever need. And just so much clicking through redundant menus. The worst part was that if you wanted to ask people about clues, for some reason it would exit you out of the clue menu each time, so you couldn't just go through the clues one by one, you had to re-open the menu from the dialogue screen and find your place each and every time and it was so annoying. There were also smaller issues, like how unclear it was which direction you were facing as you moved from screen to screen. And while I liked the art, the way the characters changed pose constantly throughout the dialogue was really annoying -- it meant they were constantly dancing around the screen like the evil schoolteacher from Fairly Oddparents, and it made it harder to look at the art. Stay still!

And then there's my worst enemy, text you couldn't adjust the speed of. The dialogue seemed to have two settings, pause and autoplay, represented by a play and fastforward icon respectively, which ???. I genuinely don't know if you were meant to be able to manually go through dialogue, since just clicking would toggle the pause/fastforward, and enter and space didn't seem to do anything. Let me control the speed! It was so much waiting. Made worse by the really bad voice acting.

Weirdly, the game made a big thing about how the game must be played with sound on, which I hate, but it didn't really matter -- there was one audio puzzle and it could be solved fine without sound, so I'm not sure what that was all about. They blew money on voice acting, I guess, and gosh darn people better listen to it.

Also one of the achievements spoils the ending -- if you put all your suspicion on the right culprit in your notebook before finishing the game, the achievement will trigger for figuring it out even though you haven't committed to anything and may still be trying to work it out. Weird choice.

All of the characters speak purely in Plot. There is no meaningful character or personality, just exposition, which was often bizarre (lots of conversations where two characters just spelled out the same information over and over) but it did mean that things progressed pretty briskly, which I appreciated. I do think part of the reason I feel positively toward it is because the plot is quite competent. My biggest criticism is that it does too good a job at giving multiple people a motive, to the point that there were just too many people still in the running at the end, and while I knew from context who it had to be, I wish the motive and reasoning had been stronger. Things were too evenly spread out to ever feel like I'd found The Clue I Needed to Put It All Together. But it's also hard to have strong motive without strong character. Also, who the eff was the Little Girl? I guess she's maybe a reference to Haunt the House based on how you can start by saying you've met her before, but why is she also like a cluemachine with a psychic connection to the swamp or something? It legit just never bothers to explain, it was super weird.

The puzzles also... sucked. Like, I don't understand why they were there. It should have just stayed text-based. One is literally handing you red, blue, and yellow flowers and asking which make green. That's not a "puzzle" it's just an interruption that prevents me from staying in the flow of the game. And the puzzles being so weirdly simplistic made the detective look like a moron, which is always a bad thing in this type of story.

I did like the the sequences where you had to build out the deductions Grimoire was making word by word -- those worked really well. And finding all the notebook entries was eminently possible in a way I liked; it had to be sussed out, but didn't fall into that moon logic one-interactable-pixel thing point-and-clicks so often do. It felt really satisfying to get all the info. I think it the basic design of the investigation was solid.

And so, somehow... I left it feeling like I should definitely check out the sequel. If any of this is improved even a little, it will be a fun game. It was eye candy, high energy, and competently plotted. I just... liked it. Maybe I'm tired. Who knows.

Ich habe bedingt durch die Tags eher ein typisches Point&Click-Adventure erwartet. Aber statt Gegenstände miteinander zu kombinieren schaut man sich um, sammelt Beweisstücke und Redet mit Verdächtigen. Es gibt immer wieder kurze Rätselsequenzen, in welchen man z.B. zusammenhänge zwischen Beweisstücken und/oder Verdächtigen herstellen muss.
Und auch wenn ich was anderes Erwartet habe, finde ich die Umsetzung des Spiel so wie es ist super und zumindest für mich mal etwas neues von der Spielart her.

“Detective Grimoire: A Masterpiece of Mysterious Marshes and Magnificent Mustaches”

⭐ 10/10 – Would interrogate a swamp creature again. ⭐

I went into Detective Grimoire expecting a cute little mystery game, and I walked out feeling like Sherlock Holmes, Phoenix Wright, and Scooby-Doo’s entire gang fused into one emotionally fulfilled super-sleuth.

First off, Grimoire himself is an absolute icon. The man wears a coat so detective-y it probably solves cases by itself. His mustache could easily be classified as an additional party member. If there were a “Best Facial Hair in a Video Game” award, this game would sweep the whole ceremony.

Then there's the supporting cast—every person in this swamp has the vibe of “I didn’t do it, but I definitely did something,” and I loved all of them. I interrogated a protesting man who answered me with the confidence of someone who hasn’t paid taxes in 400 years.

The puzzles? Chef’s kiss. Just challenging enough to make me feel smart, but not so hard that I start questioning my life choices. Solving the mystery made me feel like a genius. A swamp-dwelling, crime-solving genius. Honestly the best kind.

The art style is criminally charming. I would happily let this game steal my wallet, my heart, and my weekend.

Verdict:
If you enjoy mysteries, humor, stylish animation, or questioning people who look like they were designed by someone who hasn’t slept in three days, Detective Grimoire is your game.

Buy it. Play it. Solve a swamp crime. Live your best life.

Detective Grimoire is a mystery game where you play as the titular detective, trying to solve a murder at a secluded tourist attraction. Boggy, the mysterious swamp creature, has been accused of murdering Richard Remington, the owner of the park, but Detective Grimoire isn't so sure. The mystery is pretty engaging. I liked uncovering the backstory of Boggy's Bog, what Remington was doing in the park, and the motives of each of the suspects. The swampy theme park and cast of suspects were odd and fun. The story was easy to follow and it was usually pretty easy to follow the detective's reasoning. There's one key clue that tells you who the culprit is, but it doesn't come up too early, and the resolution had some unexpected reveals as well.

To investigate, you explore the park, interrogate suspects, and solve small puzzles. You click on the objects in each scene and talk to the characters to gather clues. You have a case file you can use to keep track of all the information you've gathered and which objects, suspects, or areas you haven't investigated fully. Most of the puzzles involve completing sentences to move the case along. The game gives you a question and you have to make the correct answer with the sentence parts it gives you. As long as you're paying attention to what's going on, these are pretty easy. I occasionally had difficulty with finding some of the clues, but you don't need to get 100% of the clues to finish the game or solve the mystery.

Detective Grimoire is pretty good if you want a short, easy detective game. The puzzles are straightforward, the mystery is engaging, and the music and art style complement it nicely. 9/10

Are you on the fence about this game? Well, I enjoyed my time with it, and I expect that the same will be true of you.

I really appreciated that the experience doesn't get bogged down by "moon logic." Everything made sense. The music and voice acting were particularly well-done! The characters all felt very animated and expressive. By the end, I was a fan of all of them.

If I could change one thing, I would add the option to check your notes during deduction sequences, as I felt like I had to brute force the solutions from time to time, due to the simple fact that I was stuck in the deduction screen. What I wanted to do was look over my notes and profiles to really feel like a detective in those moments especially!

But that said, I made it to the end all the same. They say that all's well that ends well, and this certainly ended well. By the time you complete it, I think you'll be a fan too!

To be fair couple of things should be done way better in a terms of puzzle itself where some of the items were not placed as they should be or clues are found in a places where by the logic should not be there all there like a tent code (for example).
