I really loved the Mystery Stories from Cerasus and so I had to play this one and... Well... It was more supernatural than "horror-like".

Once more it's based on a novel and that is awesome.

This game isn't as crazy as the Mystery Stories one, but... It still has its good points. For one... I could do all the mini-games. I really enjoyed the ones with having to move "two things at once". All because you can actually win by just walking around!

And once again, the Developers offered us unique puzzles and a more investigative way to go through a H.O.G... As in... Not all items are just laying there for you to pick up and you just have to click around the room and you are good. >.> No... You gotta think... And you gotta work it!

I also like that you get to pick up majority of the stuff from the H.O. scenes and they don't come back. So nice to finally have clean sections/rooms. *Pleased Sigh*

Otherwise... You get a Bonus Story this time and it was fine for a H.O.G.

A visually stunning game — truly a delight for the eyes. It follows a solid Lovecraftian-inspired story that keeps things interesting, but the puzzles are unfortunately far too easy.
I also really missed having a map to navigate more quickly between locations, especially given how often backtracking is needed.

A solid 6/10 for the art and atmosphere alone.

Great Lovecraftian hidden object adventure with bonus chapter! There is also a behind the scenes featurette showing the acting and all that went into making the game...including apparently a lot of coffee lol! Also a neat feature is that you can take items from your inventory and click on the eye on the bottom right of the screen, and it will show you where the item is used! This game also comes with the ability to download the original story by H. P. Lovecraft upon which this game is based!

I went in expecting a basic "find the objects" game with some story in the background. I was not expecting what I got instead!

"Dark Mysteries: The Sould Keeper" is a Lovecraft based game, in which a detective (the main character) is called by Charles to solve a series of murders that have been happening in his town, in an island in the middle of nowhere.
However, once you arrive you realize Charles may know a bit more than he lets go, and not only everyone's lives are in danger, but yours too.

The game is a mix between point and click and "find the objects". You move around picking everything you need, and sometimes you'll see a part of the scenery glowing, meaning you have to play the find the objects minigame, which will give you an item you need to progress. It's entertaining if you like these two genres, and the difficulty is easy-medium. The hint system is amazing, and I didn't need a walkthrough.

The story has soooo many elements I love in a story: it's not overly complicated, but allows you to immerse yourself in its world. The main character is not just a placeholder for the player, but an active character in the story. The villain is amazing, as he hinders your progress when he can, and is present through the whole story, making the dynamic between protagonist and villain really, really good.

I rarely applaud when I finish any piece of media, but this game deserved it. I really liked, and will replay it.

Very cozy (and creepy at the same time!) graphics, the best I've encountered in HOG games so far, has a decent storyline and minigames.
Crashed once but progress was saved so nothing critical. It didn't ruin my experience.

Au début, bonne ambiance (bien que certains bruits soient vraiment agaçants), le jeu est plutôt joli, dommage cependant qu'il n'y ait pas de doublages. Par contre, la quasi totalité des jeux sont les mêmes, donc le jeu devient lassant très rapidement, c'est vraiment dommage. Et il y a des erreurs dans le jeu. En effet, dans un des jeux de recherches d'objets, je devais trouver une planche à découper, que j'ai vu, mais en cliquant rien ne s'est produit. J'ai dû utiliser un indice pour constater que l'objet était une étiquette. Ils ont donc associé le mauvais objet au mot.

You wake up to the strident sound of your phone ringing. A stranger is at the end of the line. You’re a detective, so you’re used to seeing people in their most vulnerable moment. This time it’s different. His name is Charles Dexter Ward. He’s in a panic. He’s done something terrible, and needs your help to fix it. It is said that his ancestor knew the secret to immortality. Charles wanted to claim it for himself, and so he did the only thing he could... he resurrected him. Of course he could have never foreseen the devastation it would bring. A misanthropic maniac is now loose in the town. People are disappearing faster and faster, so there’s no time to lose. You pack up and travel to the fateful town of Pawtuxet. Ward’s ancestor is bent on finding enough souls for his dark aspirations, and will stop at nothing to accomplish his goal. Will you succeed where Charles has failed?

In Dark Mysteries you play as the detective. You’re there to help Charles, and the people of Pawtuxet. They are dropping like flies. If the town is to be saved you will have to find a way to stop Charles’ ancestor. Charles is way over his head, but he does have a formula that might work. Dark Mysteries is a classic hidden object/puzzle game. You have to complete puzzles and HO scenes to gather items that you will need to get to new locations, and finally put a stop to Pawtuxet’s misery.

There are several modes you can choose from for a more customized gameplay. If you wish for an easier experience, you can choose the casual mode. If you are an experienced HOG player, you can go for a more challenging option. The hints will recharge more or less quickly depending on your choice. This Collector’s edition adds a lot of bonus material. There is a strategy guide that is available throughout the game in case you get stuck. Additionally, there is some beautiful concept art, a behind the scenes video. There is also a bonus chapter that you can play once you’ve finished the main story. My favourite item from the collector’s edition is the original Lovecraft’s story. You can download it, and read it at your leisure. It is available in PDF, mobi and epub format.

The game aged really well, and the graphics are surprisingly nice for a game of this age. It’s no secret that some HOG have sub-par graphics, but Dark Mysteries’ are crisp and gorgeous. It makes a huge difference when solving puzzles and hidden object scenes. The artwork is beautiful. It’s dark and gloomy, and creates a sombre atmosphere. It’s a perfect backdrop for this Lovecraft inspired game. The cutscenes are amazing, and look almost hand-drawn. These cutscenes are the only part of the game that has voice over, but the rest of the soundtrack is great and really sets the mood.

There are a good amount of variety in the puzzles, and the difficulty level is perfect. They are not too difficult, but offer a good challenge. There is also a fair amount of HOG scenes. This specific edition has 6 chapters plus the bonus one. However I got frustrated with some of the HO scenes. I don’t know if it’s a language issue, but some of the item’s name were confusing. As an example in one scene, I had to search for “yarn”. I spent a good amount of time looking for a ball of yarn. Eventually I got tired of looking and used one of the hints only to find out that “yarn” was a spool of thread. Without the hint, I’m not sure I would've guessed it. As I’ve said it might just be a language issue, but it did make it harder for me to find certain objects. I was always wondering if I was searching for the right item. The puzzles however don’t suffer from the same problem. These have great instructions. They are clear and to the point.

There is a journal you can consult at any time which gives you some hints. I loved it, because it gives you hints of what to do next without revealing too much. You get a couple of hints for each goal, and I found the guidance helpful. However one aspect that is lacking is a map. I am baffled at this design choice. A map is usually a given in HOPA games. It makes situating yourself in the game much easier, and it provides a way to quickly travel between locations. There is usually some backtracking needed in this type of game, and a map cuts through the tedium of it. Thankfully, although there are a lot of areas to explore, you only get a couple of locations at a time. As you progress through the game more locations are uncovered. Unfortunately, the way you go to certain locations is not straightforward, and it hindered my playthrough. At times I couldn't remember how I got to an area, and having a map would have created a more enjoyable experience. Another issue is that occasionally a magnifying glass would show up on a spot that had nothing interact-able. It’s not a big deal, but did get annoying after awhile.

Dark Mysteries: The Soul Keeper is a fun HOPA. I loved the couple of hours I spent playing it. The puzzles were varied enough to keep my attention throughout, and have the perfect level of difficulty. The artwork is beautiful, the atmosphere is appropriately gloomy, and the story is a classic. If you love a good horror story, and are a puzzle/hidden objects fan, you’ll definitely want to add this game to your collection.

A pretty good click and find game. Really good music and the arts nice. Some of the puzzle were a pain because I already knew which items I needed and could see them but was not allowed to collect them until later, even though it was in the same 'i spy' section I was retrieving other items from. The actual interactive sections were a bit finicky as well but this is also a game from 2013. I nice bit of enjoyment for a couple hours, relatively simple but it does have a difficulty setting. Not a super deep story but it was cool, will probably play again sometime I want to kill a couple hours.

I've played thousands of games over the years but I don't recall seeing a warning that "this game may contain content not appropriate for all ages, or may not be appropriate for viewing at work." I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that there aren't any games appropriate for viewing at work...unless your work involves developing or testing video games! 🤣

Dark Mysteries: The Soul Keeper was inspired by H.D. Lovecraft's novel "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" You are a detective who received a call from Charles Dexter Ward claiming that the reverent murderer is real and is haunting Pawtuxet Island. Charles stated that he was responsible for resurrecting Joseph Curwen who claimed to know the secret to immortality. (How'd that work out for him?) Joseph, however, had his own agenda of collecting souls on a killing spree of innocent Pawtuxet citizens.

Dark Mysteries: The Soul Keeper was originally released in 2012 by Cerasus Media; it may be old-school, but it's definitely worth playing. There are 30 Hidden Object Scenes (+6 in the Bonus Chapter) and 11 Mini-games (+4 in the Bonus Chapter)

There are 170 scene locations, all of which can be revisited throughout the game. This is a feature that is non-existent in HOPA games nowadays and it takes the challenge aspect out of the adventure! It's impossible to get lost when you are limited to 3-4 scenes at a time; it's as if the developers are shoving us through a cattle chute and prodding us to keep moving forward. I loved exploring new areas and exposing secret tunnels and doors as the game progressed, and the fact that I had to remember where to go or where I saw this or that. To put this in perspective, City Legends: Ghost of Misty Hill Collector's Edition by Domini Games, released in May of 2023, has 19 Scene Locations in the main game and 9 additional Bonus Chapter Scenes...Dark Mysteries: The Soul Keeper has 170 Scenes!

One of my favorite features of this game is an unusual Hint Feature. (For some strange reason, this game doesn't allow you to take screenshots, so I'll have to explain this feature the best I can) If you click on the Journal, there will be a series of 4 different Objective Hints. For example: A picture of Ward's bag appears with a brief synopsis that Ward had been collecting symbolic stone pieces but that several pieces were missing. The Hints will explain the tasks that have to be completed to fulfill the objective one at a time, and you'll get new hints for each task required. The first HINT explains-[spoiler]With the can opener from the supply truck in front of the bank, I could open the dog food can[/spoiler] This is such a cool feature because sometimes you just get a "duh" moment when playing a game. Sure, you can still click the hint button, but that will just show you where to go, or what inventory item to use in a particular scene, it doesn't explain why you are doing a particular task.

[b]BONUS CHAPTER[/b]
Return to Pawtuxet Island to help Hazel perform a ritual she believes will resurrect all of the Island's Lost Souls, including the soul of her beloved fiancé, Charles Dexter Ward. This chapter has an additional 6 Hidden Object Scenes and 4 Mini-games and gives the player a nice closure to the story.

I enjoyed this game's artwork so much. The story isn't bad as you play a detective who received a message from a Ward who reported a serial killing in Pawtuxet Island. You'll sail there and immediately encounter one of the victims only to realize he is against a phantom, an ancestor of the ward who seeks immortality by capturing his victim's souls.

The voice acting is not bad, though only the cutscenes are voiced. The gameplay is just like any hidden objects game; you search for clues and collect useful items from hidden objects scenes. The good thing about the scenes is that they are not recycled; when you revisit them, the items you picked before are not there. The puzzles were easy, and some of them were unique.

I loved the journal; it is helpful as you can get four hints on solving the next objective. It is not like the regular hint button, but written hints will make you think of where you should go and what to pick. I also liked the journal pages you picked up; they give you more insight into the story and are voiced.

Adventure, puzzle, hidden object, dark game.

-PLOT

Charles Dexter Ward calls a detective to investigate strange deaths; a specter haunts Pawtuxet Island.
Ward tells the detective that his ancestor Joseph Curwen who lived in the 18th century knew the secret of immortality, so to learn this secret he decides to resurrect him from the dead.
But something has gone wrong, Joseph doesn't want to collaborate at all, in fact this murderous specter kills anyone who gets in his way, and without scruples steals their soul, imprisoning them forever.

Charles guides the detective in the search because he feels guilty for having freed this cruel ancestor of his, but unfortunately the specter blocks this descendant of his, and so in the role of the investigator
we are forced to continue alone, the only help are the notes left by Ward.
It won't be easy to stop this specter and free the inhabitants now reduced to ghosts, will we have the courage to complete this task?

PLAYABILITY

The story is inspired by a story by H.P. Lovecraft.
The graphics are beautiful, the sense of desolation, loneliness and uncertainty of being on a desert island at the mercy of a dark ghost has been well reproduced.

The object search scenes are well created, with objects that are easy to see and easy to find, and the minigames are fun and easy to complete.
We have a diary where the protagonist writes down all the progress and objectives to be achieved, and we can click on the help and it will give us small suggestions.
For the more demanding there is the complete "Strategy Guide" of the game to avoid getting stuck in the game.
Once the main plot has been completed we can access the "Bonus" chapter

We feel the lack of a map to consult to understand where we are and to move quickly from one location to another.
There is also no very useful indication where to go to find actions to perform, this leaves the player a little confused because there are many locations visited and sometimes we don't remember the way to return to a specific place and continue the plot.

Overall I recommend it because it is a fairly well made product, I enjoyed playing it.

Unravel the secret of Pawtuxet Island and face an evil necromancer. Story is based on a novel by H.P. Lovecraft. This is a hidden object adventure with lots and lots of Hidden Object Puzzles to enjoy. Also has a Bonus Chapter for even more fun.

The psychopath Charles Dexter Ward has escaped from the asylum. Your investigations lead you to Pawtuxet Island, where Ward grew up. Once peaceful and idyllic, it has now become a surreal, menacing place. The residents are either missing, dead or haunting the island in the guise of restless ghosts. Final Thoughts:
Entertaining story with lots and lots of hidden object puzzles to enjoy. Has a step by step guide to help you find your way. I was a bit lost as to where to go next and used the hint button alot. Maybe it is just me. Lots of fun and well worth the full price.

Наш герой-детектив прибывает на остров где творятся странные дела. Ожил расхититель могил и теперь никому от него нет спаса. Наша задача — остановить лихоимца. Игра сюжетно основана за произведении Лавкрафта.

Игровой процесс представляет собой квест с поиском предметов и головоломками.

Бродим по острову, открываем новые локации, находим предметы и применяем их.

В наличии просто шикарные мини-игры с поиском предметов. Лично я в восторге от местного стиля прорисовки.

Имеется несколько головоломок, которые тоже понравились — они красиво сделаны и не чересчур мудрёные.

Игре очень в плюс идёт наличие русского языка.
