Хорошая игрушка в жанре "Поиск предметов". Картинка симпатичная, музыка хорошая, атмосфера – приятно гнетущая. Порадовало, что антагонистом в сюжете выступает не какое-то абстрактное и древнее зло, которое оставляет различные предметы в неочевидных местах, а конкретный шиз и злодей, одержимый идеей о вечной молодости. Отдельно хочется отметить общую неторопливость игры - нет быстрых перемещений, нет явных подсказок (нужно читать гид в книжке), головоломки интересные и необычные, хоть иногда и простенькие, достижений нет. Никто тебя не торопит, сидишь спокойно и играешь.
Единственное, под конец игры метание из комнаты в комнату и реплики злодея после каждого действия начинают неплохо так прикумаривать, но и это пережить можно.
Считаю, что игра заслуживает вашего внимания на парочку лимонно-чайных вечеров, учитывая, что она постоянно продается по скидке.
It was surprisingly fun despite all the issues i had with it.
For most part I didn't liked how hint system works, sometimes it shows you places you cannot interact with yet.
I got lost multiple times but having a map and a guide was pretty helpful.
You should try this game when it's on -91% sale, i wouldn't recommend buying it for full price.
Very nice game, both the puzzles and the atmosphere.
Okayish HOG that's a bit worse than it's sequel. It has voice-acting and animated scenes. It's flaws are the non-functional hint system and minimap, times where you're not sure what to do, some crashes on SteamOS, and tedious minigames. Good thing it comes with an in-game walkthrough.

I played this game years ago and made a note that I loved it. Well, time has opened my eyes and I can no longer recommend this game. I just quit late game and uninstalled because it was so tedious. No jump map, no indicators of where puzzles that you can currently solve are (it shows puzzles on the map, but which one do you have the item for right now? No one knows!). That wouldn't be so bad if the map weren't absolutely huge and labyrinthian. I spent more time wandering around trying to find things than I care to admit. Also, some of the puzzles and details are just too small for my older eyes to make out at this point. I didn't encounter the game breaking bug, but then again, I quit before the end (though I was almost done, I believe). Two thumbs down on this one in 2026.

The puzzles were interesting without being overly difficult. very enjoyable and unique for me.
Good story, but the graphics show their age, lots of backtracking, and unfortunately, there was a game-breaking glitch where I didn't receive an item after a puzzle which was imperative for progression. Unable to refund. Would rate a so-so if I was able, but as is, leaning towards negative.
Story is a bit spooky but nice. Easy HOGs and nice riddles. Played quite some time. Reduced price was nice.
Игра классная, красивая и атмосферная (за эффект кинопленки отдельная благодарность). Сюжет хорош, нелогичности в применениях предметов не заметил. Еще мне понравилась карта, с её обозначениями (значок зоны поиска предметов просто спасает). Но есть 2 нюанса, которые мне не очень понравились:
1. Иногда попадаются странные головоломки - по типу, просто скопировать рисунок просто перетаскивая квадраты (в чем сложность этой задачки я так и не понял);
2. Малое количество возможных действий в локациях (комнатах) или вовсе их бессмысленность. В большинстве комнат можно взять 1-2 предмета и сделать 1 (иногда 2) действия и всё - дальше эти места пустуют и ни для чего не нужны, только растягивают перемещение между комнатами.
Ещё я не понимаю строение дома по карте, но это не особо то и важно.
Игра мне очень понравилась (несмотря на нюансы). Определенно рекомендую к прохождению.

There are reports of young people going missing over the last few weeks on the news. You play as Sam Wilde, an investigative journalist. who was supposed to go on a date with his girlfriend Anna. However, when Sam arrives at the meeting spot, Anna is nowhere to be seen, there is just her ring and a letter reading that she has been taken to Goldvale Manor, and to go there alone if you want to see her alive.
The game has you traversing through Goldvale Manor, all the while being taunted and made fun of by a man who called himself Oscar, Anna and the other missing young people's kidnapper. Oscar has speakers spread throughout the mansion to be able to speak to you from his hidden command center.
while traversing the mansion, you can read crumpled notes from Oscar's childhood and newspaper articles that reveal his past, motivation and mental state. Sam also has his own notebook (as he's a journalist.) where he writes down his feelings and responses to whats happening in-game.

The voice acting in this game is... meh, apart from one. Oscar. His voice actor clearly enjoyed his role as he played it to perfection, he really sounds like a maniac who enjoys kidnapping and embalming his victims into "works of art".
[h3]Bonus Chapter[/h3]
This game does have a bonus chapter that unlocks after you beat the main game. it's about 1-1.5 hours long and acts as an epilogue to the Sam vs Oscar story, with an unexpected and good twist at the end. If you don't want to play the bonus chapter and just want to know what happens, here: [spoiler] In the end, you shut off the power to the abandoned theme park and Oscar rises from a hatch in the ground. However, Oscar has put himself into one of his own embalming tubes and it begins filling with the embalming fluid. Oscar monologues about how he has already called the police, and he will embalm himself to frame Sam as the original kidnapper who kidnapped and embalmed all the other young people. Sam is framed and arrested for all the murders and kidnappings.[/spoiler]
the puzzles were fun and not too terribly difficult. the art is beautiful and the atmosphere was more kinda creepy than horror. not a complaint!

Проходя её я вновь задумался о том, что как же хорошо, что происходящее в жизни не превратило меня во что-то страшное, что возвращает причинённое зло всему и вся. Есть же другой путь, когда ты можешь дать хорошее тем, кому это надо, кто сам готов дарить хорошее. Таким образом ты не растрачиваешь добро, получая зло взамен, которое потом должно куда-то деваться; ты даёшь добро и получаешь добро.
О любви и интервью разработчиков об игре, которое я с удовольствием посмотрел вместе с остальными бонусами издания. Помимо подсказок и возможности пропуска мини-игр нас ожидают советы и подробное прохождение игры, что очень и очень здорово.
Ищем предметы и ищем удачное место для их применения, а временами ищем кучу предметов в зонах поиска, где для нахождения некоторых вещей из списка потребуется как-то взаимодействовать с окружением данной зоны, чтобы получить искомые предметы. Всё это нам необходимо для успешного поиска и во имя любви... А ещё тут есть дневник главного героя, где он пишет свои мысли и складывает записки, что нашёл. Там же имеется диктофон, где сохраняется всё то, что мы слышим.
С удовольствием прошёл игру, всем сохранения любви!
Кстати, есть и другая часть серии, действие которой развивается в этом же мире. Их названия похожи, не перепутаете. Начинать можно с любой из частей, поскольку это не помешает восприятию, но лучше в порядке выхода.
I remember playing this game (as well as the ghosts of maple creek also available on steam) on my kindle fire when I was probably 10 years old. I had the free demo, so I only experienced the very beginning of the game. Now that I'm older, I wanted to find the game again to finish it. I was really excited to see it on steam, and even more excited to see the ending. Aside from it's aged graphics, I think it's a really solid hidden object/puzzle game and I definitely recommend it.
a big thumbs up - a fabulous game i could not see the point of hints they did not help only the map to let you know about remaining puzzle and hog games and locked areas and you need the map to trace your way through i love this sort of genre but you cant just press a button to know where to go next you need to remember thats what makes it so awesome
Great game, chill puzzles, diverse difficulty levels! Never felt bored nor overwhelmed.
Just... don't bother. It's not really worth even the 1€ I paid for it to scratch the itch for these kinds of casual adventure games.
Is short:
- The villain is badly written, and not even in the funny kind of bad, but just annoying bad.
- The puzzles are mostly tedium.
- The heavy breathing sound effect of the main character gets old really fast.
- The narrative is low-key brain dead and the ending is unsatisfactory - and the ending of the bonus chapter even more so.
- As an icing on the cake the wide screen -setting is borked, so you're either playing in stretched full screen - that's fun - or in a really small window, struggling to spot the important details.
Spend your money elsewhere.

Подзаголовок игры взят из романа Оскара Уайльда 1890 года «Портрет Дориана Грея». Злодей игры, Оскар (названный в честь автора), одержим вечной молодостью, как и главный герой книги. Чтобы удовлетворить свои желания, он убивает «молодых и красивых» людей и превращает их в произведения искусства в своем особняке. Мы играем в роли журналиста Сэма Уайльда (также названного в честь автора) попадаем в дом Оскара в поисках своей девушки Анны, которая стала его последней жертвой похищения.
В результате должна была получиться неплохая игра в жанре «поиск предметов», но сюжет и некоторые эстетические решения постоянно мешают ей, буквально на каждом шагу. На каждом экране Оскар и/или Анна разговаривают с вами большими блоками диалогов через громкоговорители. Иногда они начинают нести чушь, даже когда вы делаете что-то простое, как открытие запертой двери или решение головоломки. Зачем или для чего это было добавлено в игру не ясно, полезной информации данные сообщения не несут, а только отвлекают.
Что явно не понравилось - это муторное перемещение по локациям, быстрых переходов нет, к концу игры данный геймплей и слабая подача сюжета утомляет не на шутку.
В целом, проходимо, благо игра короткая иначе бы не осилил. 5/10
It is an excellent point and click game that holds up very well despite being 13 years old! I love that there is no talking with characters and endless dialogue trees to get through and that the protagonist is silent through the game. Intriguing story, fun puzzles and a huge amount of content. The house quickly expands and soon you have a huge maze to navigate through. It is very straight forward with its logic and I like that, it makes it solvable, and the map is a nice support. Good hint system and explanation of puzzles if you get stuck. Highly recommend!

I really enjoyed the game, the bad guy was creepy and puzzles were fun and challenging!!!
Pretty good. Not really all that scary but it was fun. There's a built in guide if you get lost and you can skip any puzzle (like the train one). The hint mechanic only works if you're in the right room, so that can get annoying if you don't know what you're supposed to be doing. Bonus chapter is a nice, concise epilogue.
Also, the pencil is on the picture frame.

Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome ist ein Wimmelbildspiel, oder HOG (englisch für Schwein), im Stile von... naja... jedem anderen HOG halt.
Diesmal hat ein wahnsinniger Serienkiller unsere Freundin entführt und es geht um nicht weniger, als ihr Leben zu retten.
Wie eigentlich immer in diesen Spielen ist das Genre Krimi oder Mystery, mal mehr, mal weniger in Richtung Fantasy abdriftend (bei diesem Spiel eher weniger).
Es gibt ein Gruselhaus mit passender Musikuntermalung, auffindbaren Leichen, kreativsten, selbst geschmiedeten Schlössern und Gegenständen, die man noch nie im realen Leben gesehen hat, aber jetzt unbedingt braucht um diese Tür zu öffnen.
Die Rätsel sind dabei nicht allzu schwer. Auch wenn ein paar davon echt nervig sein können, kommt man doch immer irgendwie weiter. Zur Not lassen sich einzelne Rätsel auch überspringen.
Es ist komplett auf Deutsch spielbar.
Es handelt sich um ein älteres HOG von 2012. Einige QoLs, die später Standard wurden in dieser Art Spiel, gibt es hier nicht.
Ich vermisse Fast Travel (über die Karte direkt in einen anderen Raum springen), einstellbare Schwierigkeitsstufen und Errungenschaften.
Eigentlich ist Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome normaler, älterer Standard.
Aber das ist nicht unbedingt etwas schlechtes, wenn man HOGs mag.
Wenn man keine HOGs mag, würde man diese Rezension sowieso nicht lesen, also kannst Du bedenkenlos zugreifen. Vor allem im Sale.

Loved it. The voice acting was very good. Enjoyed the puzzles too they were unique and haven't seen them in many HOG:s. Only thing I didn't like about the game was no fast travel map but its an older game so I let it slide. Also would love trading cards for this game.

Fearing the worst and with no other options, Sam rushes to the Manor and soon realizes he's nothing more than a pawn playing a twisted game of "catch me if you can" in a maze of horrors freak show. Oscar eagerly entices Sam through a multitude of doors and secret passageways. He tracks Sam's every move through a series of cameras and speakers, constantly taunting him and toying with his emotions.
Sam knew he was dealing with a deranged psychopath, but nothing could have prepared him for the human artwork he was about to witness next!...

This is an old-school HOPA before the creation of a Jump Map. It does have a map that shows each location and where available tasks are located, but you're going to have to travel with your own two virtual feet! This will be no easy task because you will be discovering secret passageways and unlocking dozens of doors within the manor, and unlike today's HOPAs, the scenes won't lock behind you as you progress. In fact, you will be revisiting these scenes throughout the game.
For me, this "free-roaming" aspect is the [b]Adventure[/b] part of the Hidden Object Puzzle Adventure game that no longer exists! Having to keep track of or remember how to get back to a particular scene once you finally find an inventory item requires critical thought. In HOPAs of today, scenes are locked behind you, and you're always pushed to move forward as if you're in a cattle chute. How can a game be challenging or require critical thinking if you only have to keep track of 2-3 scenes at a time?
[h3]HIDDEN OBJECT SCENES:[/h3]
There's just something about old-school Hidden Objects Scenes that made them seem more authentic, and they always served a purpose. Somehow they were able to hide the objects in plain sight, yet you had to scour the scene several times to find the objects because they blended items strategically into the scenery. Magicindie Softworks found the Goldilocks sweet spot with the Hidden Object Scenes in Brink of Consciousness; not too many, not too few, just right!
As I stated above, the HO scenes in older games always had a purpose. They were designed to make the player feel as though they were actually searching through a pile of random junk in search of missing parts or a much-needed inventory item. Several HO scenes are repeated from previous chapters so if you can't figure out what you're supposed to do next, revisit previous scenes in search of another HO scene.
[h3]MINI-GAMES:[/h3]
Puzzles had a purpose too. Every mini-game opens intricate locks or turns on electrical panels. Most of the mini-games are mechanical-type puzzles where you adjust pressure gauges or select weights that equal a specific setting. What I loved about these puzzles was that every puzzle was doable without having to refer to a 20-page walkthrough! Most are solved using common sense or simple addition. They are still challenging, and you will feel a sense of pride when you solve them. There were some really unique mini-games, some of which I haven't seen offered in any of the newer games!
[h3]BONUS CHAPTER:[/h3]
The Bonus Chapter is a sequel that takes place three months after the main story. Sam receives a call from his editor insisting he checks out a lead at the local amusement park (nothing good ever happens at amusement parks in HOPA games, right?) Once he enters the park, Sam quickly realizes that Oscar has returned and that he'd walked right into another twisted trap...now Sam must fight for his survival!
The Bonus Chapter takes about an hour to complete, depending on how well you remember how to navigate the park's multiple passageways. You won't be disappointed in the quality of the BC, the developers put just as much effort into this final chapter. It's a good story with a nice little plot twist, with plenty of puzzles, and challenging Hidden Object Scenes.

10 "Unknown Oscar" pictures portraying Oscar trying to adapt to his life on the lam in everyday situations. They show that the developers had a great sense of humor, and Big Fish Games members will easily identify with the picture of Oscar and Felix the Fish.
Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome will absolutely delight HOPA fans who are longing for the adventure aspect that has been missing in newer games. The lack of a Jump Map may be a turnoff for those not interested in a challenge. But for those willing to try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at how entertaining a HOPA was and can be. You will be completely vested in the gameplay, and, like me, will wonder why developers took the Adventure out of our Hidden Object Adventure games!

Для жары эта страшная игрушка самое то. Нет перемещения по карте - это даже хорошо,бродишь сама по замку,а там набальзамированные люди,жутко очень.
И вообще все современные игры в подмётки не годятся стареньким игрушкам.

Normalerweise spiele ich Role Playing Games, wie etwa Black Mirror, Syberia, Baphomets Fluch, also eher die guten alten Point& Click Spiele. Zwischendurch auch mal Wimmelbildspiele. Leider ist es oft so, dass sich die Spiele untereinander sehr ähneln. Dieses Spiel, finde ich, ist anders. Viele Wimmelbildszenen, keine wüste Klickerei, sondern gut zu findende Objekte, die Minispiele, die einfach mal anders sind, fand ich super. Das Spiel läuft einwandfrei, keine Hänger, oder Abstürze. Es hat mir so gut gefallen, dass ich mir das Zweite auch gleich gekauft habe. Schade, dass es nur die Beiden gibt. Alle Daumen hoch.

Standard HOG game. One of 2 in a series. Unfortunately it does not have achievements or trading cards which is a con for me.
Overall, okay story and decent scenes and mini games.
Standard price is a bit high but if it goes on sale, definitely a good grab.
Finished! Some of the late-game puzzles were very confusing, though overall I enjoyed the game (and it does include a "skip" button for those tricky moments). Nice concept art in the "bonus" section too!
So glad I got this game to work, the puzzles and story were great and the villain interesting and fun. The bonus chapter ending not at all what I was expecting.
[h1] Um point and click muito bem construído. [/h1]
O que mais me agradou foi a jogabilidade dinâmica, vc entra e sai das salas da mansão instantaneamente, se há algum carregamento é muito rápido, essa otimização torna a experiência fluída e agradável. A campanha tem 3 mapas, que se conectam e correspondem ao lado de fora e ao 1º e 2º andares da mansão. Também tem um capítulo bônus, com apenas um mapa em um parque abandonado. É nesse capítulo que o final é revelado e é bastante surpreendente.
A manipulação de objetos é simples, vc vai pegando e utilizando nos puzzles, que são muitos, pelo caminho. A arte é muito, muito bonita e agrada aos olhos, enquanto a música não é espetacular, mas cumpre bem o seu papel. Já os efeitos sonoros, dão angústia. Imagina vc concentrado em um puzzle complexo e aqueles barulhos de coisa caindo, quebrando, de porta rangendo, de alguém, talvez o assassino, pisando em vidro quebrado, enfim, angustiante.
A história é simples, como thriller não é nem um Hitchcock, mas ainda assim te prende e surpreende no final. O assassino é muito bem construído, principalmente na parte psicológica, quanto mais vc se aprofunda ao longo do jogo e os mistérios vão se descortinando, mas real e assustadora a experiência vai se tornando. Tinha horas em que eu só queria que acabasse, pq realmente assusta. E a dublagem dispensa comentários.
Point and click top, pra vc ficar jogando a tarde inteira, principalmente se gosta de histórias de terror. Em relação aos puzzles, tem alguns que são bem desafiadores e até cansativos e é muito recompensante quando vc acha a solução por conta própria, não importa quanto tempo leve.
A versão que eu adquiri (Collector's Edition) vem com um detonado embutido, que eu só precisei lançar mão uma vez, no puzzle do trem. Alerta: o puzzle do trem é impossível de se resolver sem o detonado, a menos que vc seja um gênio. Todos os outros puzzles podem ser resolvidos sozinhos. Nota final: 9/10.
Obs: Quero agradecer a Ladynha que forneceu um tutorial de como traduzir o game para PT BR, o que tornou a experiência muito melhor. Se vc tiver algum problema por não estar em português recomendo que use o tutorial dela, que é bem fácil e ajudou muito.

プレイ時間6時間半ぐらいで本編とボーナス章をクリアしました。
よくあるアイテム探し＆パズル＆アドベンチャーゲームの一つです。パズル自体は簡単なのもあり、やり応えのあるのもあり、楽しめました。ただ初見だと何をどうしろというのか分からないパズルが結構あるので、ヒント（左上の[？]マーク）は見るの必須です。アイテム探しはミスタッチしてもペナルティが何もないので、途中からはとりあえず適当にクリックしまくればいいやとなってしまいました。
日本語訳はかなりしっかりしてます。採算取れてるのか心配になるぐらい、画像の中身まで和訳してあってしかもフォントも雰囲気に合う物を使用していて驚きでした。
ゲーム中でどうしても苛ついたのがマップから瞬間移動する機能がないことです。かなり入り組んで分岐の多いマップを行ったり来たりさせる構成なのに自分で向かわなければなりません。何回目当てと違う場所に行き着いてしまったか分かりません。主人公が館でうろうろ迷ってるのを犯人がずっと監視してると思うとマヌケすぎて笑えます。
他にもCG（特に人間のモーション）の質が悪いとか細かなツッコミ所はありますけど、適度な難易度で満足感も達成感もあり、総合的におすすめです。本編クリア後すぐにボーナス章を始めたぐらいには楽しんでプレイしました。

Puzzles were good but there was too much running about for me and not enough HOS. The map was not much use and you couldn't click on it to get where you needed to be
This is a classic hidden object game. The amount of hidden object scenes to puzzles and point and click elements is pretty good. It also has a good story with an effective villain, which I cannot say for most hidden object games. The villain isn't hidden away from the player and only meetable at the last second: he appears in multiple locations and actually taunts the player, which is fun. The scenery is beautiful, but not overly stylized. Hidden objects and puzzles are not terribly hard and are fun to do.
This comes with the bonus chapter, and so I will say that if you like more of the villain, you'll like it, but its a very short scenario and personally I'm not a fan of its ending.
Великолепная игра! Одна из лучших данного жанра. Из плюсов хочется отметить анимацию, рисовку, неплохой шрифт русского языка, оформление и антураж игры, который проработан до мелочей, в том числе дневника и карты. Карта, кстати говоря, нарисована необычно, в виде плана и смотрится приятнее, чем то, что делают сейчас. Прекрасная классическая музыка присутствует на каждом моменте игры и дарит элемент загадочности.
Говоря о загадках хочется сказать, что они простые, по большей части необычные (я таких раньше не видел), но зачастую затянутые. Догадаться о методе решения можно за минуту, но на все перестановки уйдёт минимум пять.
В поиске предметов порадовало отсутствие штрафа за missclick.
Из минусов хочу выделить отсутствие быстрого перемещения, потому как локации большие и бегать приходится много. Также нет пометки активной зоны, вернее она есть, но она будто бы не доделана. Если ты не кликнул на какую-то область, в которой тебе не хватает предмета в текущий момент, то она у тебя не подстветится красным крестом (красный крест - место интереса). И вторым негативным ментом стало повторение областей поиска предметов, что лично я очень не люблю. ИМХО это выглядит глуповато, будто разработчик поленился сделать дополнительную область.
Подводя черту под всем выше сказанным, игра несомненна прекрасна. Да, в ней есть негативные моменты, но они ничтожно малы по сравнению с плюсами. И к тому же за такую то цену - грех жаловаться.

I've played loads of HOGs/puzzle games and this one really stands out!
Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome is alot darker than the other games I've played in this genre. I LOVE that!
Pros:
+ Dark and morbid
+ Several puzzles I've never seen in other games
+ Good voice acting and great dialogues & monologues
+ Captivating story
+ The final ending was different and awesome
Cons:
- A few items had strange purposes
- Can't fast travel between scenes
Other than those two, I can't really think of any other negative aspects.

+I like both the game's regular ending and especially the bonus chapter ending. Nice twist.
+Enjoyed the antagonist and his voice acting. Reminded me a little of Andrew Ryan from Bioshock.
+Little details I hadn't seen in a HOG before like the main protagonist reacting to the weather outside. Another example is when you are searching a bookcase with your mouse and some books fall of for a "jump scare" as if it was the protagonist's actual hands touching the books.
+Music
-Too many trial and error puzzles and not enough logic ones. A lot of them had overly long solutions.
-Not enough HO scenes and they short and on the easier side.
-Lack of warp through the map made for a lot of going back and forth.

Killer Thriller trying to be more original than it is.
The story is pretty standard for a horror based hidden object game; you chase the killer around the environment, solving puzzles as you go. There is a twist at the end but it is minor for the most part.
Overall I found a lot of the puzzles either boring or annoying. There's a few really good ones, and a lot of really tedious ones that require a lot of precise inputs that just bogs the game down in frustrating puzzle design. There is so much "COLLECT KEY ITEM TO PLACE IN KEY SLOT" and it gets tiring after a while. On top of this, the map, even on normal mode, sucks. You cannot fast travel you have to travel one screen at a time, which wouldn't be a problem if this game didn't revolve almost entirely around backtracking after every single solved puzzle or gained item. You rarely feel like you're moving forwards and environments open up way too quickly, making you feel lost at times. The map's "place of interest" signifier also does not work properly. Numerous times I had to refer to a guide in order for it to tell me where to go, because of how sprawling the map is designed it makes it hard to keep track of rooms, missing keys/environmental interactions, and makes the whole thing just feel like a mess.
The graphics are decent, the animation is serviceable, and the graphics are nice and interesting. The setting feels appropriately run-down and decrepit, but I have seen better. The killer taunts you almost every single time you enter a new room or solve a puzzle and gets old really fast. If they cut the amount of times he interjects in half, it would be a lot more bearable. As it stands, I was ignoring him and cutting into other rooms, which ends his long-winded speeches, which also feels like you're cutting short some of the plot, although I can assure you, a lot of it is just fluff and lore.

One of the best HOG I played in a while. Superb voice acting and unexpected ending.
This WOULD be a thumbs down had they developed Oscar a lot more, its clear they were having fun with him, why not go all out on that. But the main problem of this game is the pointless constant AND LONG backtracking.... finishing this game felt like a chore, and the ending (bonus chapter) was not worth it, again, devs should've hade more fun with Oscar, should've cranked up to the max everything he is, all they needed was a lot more voice acting, as it is, he felt like he could be more memorable.
A game where you need lots of patience to play it and try to find those little objects and figure out what to do. Super boring. My patience has ran out after 0.2 hour

I recently started playing HOGs and I have to say, this one set the bar high for others now. I loved the story, the artwork was gorgeous, the voice acting was great, and the animations were... animated... but really the main thing I disliked was the backtracking. Dear lord, the backtracking. I would regularly get lost too, because of the backtracking. Even still, I had a LOT of fun with this game, and I am about to play the other Brink of Consciousness game next! One warning, don't tab out of the game or mess with the options for full screen or the game will remove the option to run in widescreen mode until you reinstall. It doesn't change much in game, but some people said the screen was cut off after this change, I just got black bars on either side and was still able to play normally otherwise.
This Game is really good, if only they came out with another one, I would pay money for it.
Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome is a cool point-and-click hidden object game with a good story centered around a great villain, one of the best in this genre, with lots of voice acting.
Besides that, gameplay is standard: explore, collect items, use them, solve puzzles. The map included here is a great addition, marking places with incomplete stuff, so you’re never lost too long. The hint system also helps.
It lasts a few hours, and the collector edition includes stuff like a short epilogue, an in-game guide and an interview with the developers. Really enjoyed this touch.
My main issue is the fixed resolution, that stretches out on the screen. The locations are beautiful, but playing it on fullscreen makes everything blurry because of this.
But overall, I really enjoyed it, and can easily recommend it on sale.

为了追求永恒，把人泡福尔马林做成艺术品，但是不得不承认他做的艺术品很好地融入了环境，还真他喵的有艺术感......
不过一个房间里一个大尸体+大喇叭里Oscar的叨叨叨+昏暗的环境（画面太暗了我经常找不到东西），身临其境的话确实挺容易心理崩溃的，Sam是个狠人 ......虽然是个倒霉的狠人

Totally original. Oh myyyy! I enjoyed the story and evil Oscar!. Also Interesting puzzles of various levels of difficulty. I love how the Bonus continues the story. I am still in disbelief at the outcome, in a 'I'm grinning good way!'
This is a difficult game to rate, but overall, there were too many things I didn't like, so I can't recommend it. The story is somewhat standard for a HOG -- a loved one is kidnapped -- though it's definitely psychologically "darker" than others. The visuals were good, despite it being an older game, and the audio was good as well. I particularly enjoyed the hidden object scenes which were more difficult than other HOGs I've played, but still fair (I didn't notice any incorrectly-labeled items, there were no completely obscured items, etc). The problem was the gameplay.
- There is a map, but there is no fast travel.
- The map shows whether a room is a place of interest, has a puzzle, has a hidden object scene, and/or has a locked door. However, it does not show if there is still an action to be taken (such as needing to find an item in the room). Also, there was at least one time when there was an unsolved puzzle in a room and the map did not indicate it.
- On two occasions, I had no idea what to do because after I completed a task, there were no indications of what to do next. I had to look at the map to see that a hidden object scene had appeared in a completely unrelated room, far from where I was.
- At one point, I was stuck for over 30 minutes trying to figure out what to do next. I had used all of the items in my inventory and I didn't recall seeing the items needed by any of the places of interest shown on the map. I didn't know if I legitimately missed something (which I did) or if there was a bug in the game. There were about 8 tasks to be done (places of interest), so I had no idea what item I missed and needed to find. And, because the map does not show when a room has an uncollected item, I had no way of knowing where to look. There is a hint button, but that just circles a place to look on the screen or tells you there is nothing to be done at that location. I had to look through the strategy guide to find the item I missed.
- The minigames are unbearably tedious. Most of them are very easy, but still take several minutes (sometimes up to 10 minutes or longer) because of how tedious they are. One such example is you need to color and drag into place about 60 or 70 individual blocks to form a mirror image of a house.
- For a game without fast travel, there was far too much backtracking requiring you to go from one end of the map to the other repeatedly.
On the positive side, there is a hint system for normal screens and HO screens (as expected) and a skip system for minigames (which you will probably need to use for at least one minigame which requires you to have greater think-ahead ability and planning than a chess grandmaster).
While I enjoyed the game overall, the tedious nature of the minigames and the excessive backtracking without fast travel were major annoyances and probably accounted for at least 1/3 of my playtime. For that reason, I have to say "not recommended".

また、謎解きやアイテムの場所に関しても全部乗っている答えが用意されているのでそれを見ればつっかえる事もなくストレスなしのゲームを楽しめる。
外国産ゲームなのに翻訳完璧なのも素晴らしく、おススメしたいゲーム

The villain is a serial killer who thinks murder is art. Very strong story with Hitchcock-worthy suspense. The ending was great and unrushed. Many puzzles & mini-games were unique! I enjoyed the Victrola puzzle.
I heavily relied on the map which was 3 pages long. You cannot jump to locations. Since you will do a lot of backtracking, I recommend checking the Guide occasionally OR taking notes on what and where actions need to be taken (ex: need lever @ electrical box past fountain), because after so many new locations are added, you may not remember where or how to get there, & you don't want to have to revisit them all back to the beginning. The hint button does not show you where to go.
The Hint button helps you in the HOS, find an item within a room, and will tell you there is "nothing to do here right now" in a zone so you don't need to pixel hunt.
You can skip puzzles & mini-games. I was able to do most of them without skipping.
Clear graphics. A couple of items in HOS were too dark to see (ex: black boots underneath a dark desk in the shadow). With my eyesight, I need brightly-colored objects. I think that you use each HOS twice, looking for diff objects each time. There are may HOS.
The journal was good: it shows clues, writes down his thoughts, and has actual recordings of each time the villain spoke (you can listen to them again).

Absolutely wonderful older HOPA. Great puzzles, included strategy guide, and HOS that actually require intent searching without objects hiding in plain sight or the whole scene looking like a blurry junk pile. I actually had to use the map...a lot...(and no fast travel here, folks) and deduce/remember how to get somewhere and what I could or should be doing next. Storyline wasn't bad either.

More repetitive than the Lonely Hearts one, Puzzles seem forced instead of complicated just make you do constant clicking in order to pad game time as well as the constant "cut scenes" from having to move back and forth through the same areas such as having to use the elevator several times and having to watch every time it goes up or down. Where the game as a whole is alright and deserving of a play through the cost of $10 is insane for only a handful of hidden object puzzles and having to repeat those same ones several times.

Great hidden object game with a cool story line. You can finish it in a couple hours, it's always been a favourite.
Normally I don't expect much from the story in hidden object games but this one's story was actually pretty interesting. It also had a nice balance of puzzles to hidden object scenes.
Excellent quality HOG, there's voice acting, its very polished, and the art is very nice. I also enjoy the theme of a spooky mansion. OH and the story is cool too.

Last time i played scary hidden objects when i was 10th! And i never find games so interesting after that, usually my sister and i skipped the puzzles. But we managed to finish them in this game. Amazing puzzle & story. Too much places? Could be confusing at times, but this deserve more!
Absolutely awful game. The map is useless, not allowing you to fast track between scenes leaving you to constantly click back and forth to find the next objective. Hidden object scenes are dull and uninteresting and there is too much dialogue (boring) thank goodness you can skip these! Some of the mini games rely solely on luck and the hint button only activates when you're actually in a correct room, otherwise just says there's nothing to do in that area, And the lift!! Seriously, I was getting travel sick going up and down in there! I rarely regret my purchases from Steam but, on this occasion, I do!
was fun with a little bit of suspense and thriller aspects not overly scary more psychological. The puzzles are fun and not too hard to figure out what goes where only annoying thing is there's no quick travel. The story is interesting enough but I finished it so quickly that I'm glad i got it on sale instead of full price which would have annoyed me at how easy it was to finish.

There are plenty of other reviews with better depth than mine, but I just want to toss a quick Positive this game's way.
The Good:
-The story is excellent for a casual game! Suspenseful psychological horror good enough to have been a movie. This is my biggest reason for bothering to write a quick review. Bonus chapter added a great twist too.
-The villain's voice actor is wonderful.
-It looks pretty great for its age. Bugged out and wouldn't let me select widescreen, but I don't feel like much detail was lost. (I think there's a fix on the forum, but I couldn't be bothered to try)
-Hidden object scenes don't repeat a lot and are pretty interesting.
-Good selection of puzzles. Some are pretty challenging, but there's still plenty you've seen before by now.
-Really liked the little bonus art section with the villain doodles.
The So-So:
-Backtracking. Everywhere. Rooms split into multiple paths frequently, making it a chore to get where you need to be (and sometimes it's pretty far from wherever you found a needed item). I can't fault the map for being interesting and not so linear though; it just needed a better way to get travel quickly.
-Some of the items that you need to use on each other during hidden object scenes were very finicky. For instance, I had the right combination but was off by a couple pixels I guess - the held item was over the other and still not reacting. One item in the bonus chapter suddenly wanted me to hold it over the other item WITHOUT clicking, which hadn't been introduced as a mechanic anywhere in the base game. Would not have guessed this. Luckily, it has a built-in, very in-depth guide, as the hint button is worthless for these: it will only highlight the first item, which I'd already found, and not show how/where it interacts.
-Fairly short. 3-4 hours without any real replay value. However, I also can't fault this because I much prefer the devs kept the story from dragging (as again, it's a really great one). Just bear it in mind when considering price to playtime ratio.
Overall, a really big thumbs up from me! I love this style horror story!
This game made me fall in love with this genre of games. I couldn’t stop playing it. I wanted to know how the story ended! This could have been a great movie.

A really fun, and surprisingly well animated, game. Exceedingly short, though. Played through the entire game, including the bonus episode, in just over 3 hours. It's a great game, but don't buy it at full price. Especially considering the game is over a decade old (I had it on my computer back then, too). Not really any real replay value, either. 3 or so hours, and that's all you got.

True, this is really just one of your standard game-mill Point and Click puzzle games (like Wild Tangent is so fond of crapping out) with a bigger budget. However, the style, fluidity, and sense with which it is made make it worth a couple plays at least.
The story of this game pulls you in and makes you want to continue doing the puzzles and find the objects to see the story to the end. It's fun and challenging! I highly recommend this game if you enjoy hidden object games and puzzles.

The navigation is a bit weird and hidden object scenes reappear but I managed okay.

Головоломки здесь логически обоснованы тем что это ловушки Оскара. Антагонист вообще отлично прописан и озвучен с душой. А вот перевод его монологов не совсем корректен. Эпилог является настоящей концовкой игры - не пропустите.
Я прошла игру на одном дыхании и она однозначно стоит того, чтобы потратить на нее своё время.
The story is very engaging for a hidden object game. The art is lovely even though it's a horror game. There were a few puzzles that had me really stuck, so I skipped past them because I really wanted to know the story. And enjoyable 4 hours.
It was really fun until it just refused to play with sound, and then after that wouldn't launch at all. Idk what it was, tried everything to fix it.
Eines der besten HOGs, die ich seit langem gespielt habe! Abwechslungsreiche Szenerien, gute Rätsel und schöne Wimmelbildszenen wechseln sich in einem entspannten Maß ab, sodass es eine gute Mischung ergibt. Obenauf gibt es interessantes Storytelling und die spannende Atmosphäre.
Die Geschichte ist theoretisch simpel: Ein gesuchter Psycho entführt deine Freundin, um sich an dir - einem Reporter - wegen einem Artikel in der Zeitung zu rächen. Er ist so dreist, dich in sein Anwesen einzuladen und zu einem Wettlauf gegen die Zeit herauszufordern. Du musst Anna finden, ehe er sie tötet.
Untermalt wird die Atmosphäre dieser Story von Geräuschen des Protagonisten, z. B. Atemgeräuschen, und den knappen, gut geschriebenen Notizen im Tagebuch. Dazu kommt das fantastische Voice-Acting des Psychos, der immerzu über die überall verteilten Lautsprecher mit dir spricht und dir das Gefühl gibt, genau das zu tun, was er von dir will. Das gibt dem Spiel nicht nur Spannung, sondern auch charakterliche Tiefe für den Psycho.
Außerdem konnte ich ein paar seiner Sachen zerdeppern, was ein cooles - und stellenweise erschreckendes - Feature ist :D Passt aber auch wieder gut zur Atmosphäre.
Das einzige, vernachlässigbare Manko ist, dass es doch ein bisschen Backtracking gibt. Mich hat es in diesem Fall nicht gestört, teilweise passierte sogar noch was beim Zurücklaufen. Die integrierte Map gibt keine Möglichkeit zur Schnellreise, zeigt aber immer präzise an, in welchem Raum etwas zu machen ist. Sie unterscheidet sogar zwischen Rätsel, Wimmelbildszene und interaktivem Bereich. Ist also hilfreich :)
